What Are The Benefits Of Stem Integration In Mathematics Classrooms In Underserved Schools? A Literature Review, Steve Heinold
What Are The Benefits Of Stem Integration In Mathematics Classrooms In Underserved Schools? A Literature Review, Steve Heinold
Indiana STEM Education Conference
The importance of mathematics education and STEM education in K-12 education in the United States is peaking. High stakes testing and focus on 21st Century skills have many schools scrambling to increase test scores while better preparing their students for the “real world.” This literature review looks at the history of STEM education in the United States and the recent focus on STEM integration into core individual subject classrooms, especially mathematics. This review also analyzes the effectiveness of STEM integration to help students from underserved schools and communities. While there is some evidence that engaging and responsive after-school STEM programs …

We designed and offered a Professional Development (PD) course for K-12 in-service teachers and educators across Indiana to address critical theory on race, immigration, English Language Learners (ELLs), and gender. In this study, we investigate teachers’ perceptions on gender stereotypes in STEM from the PD course. We report findings from the analysis of participants’ responses from pre-course surveys and posed discussions during the course.

K-12 Teachers' Perceptions Of Stem, Brittany Vancil, Emily Nicholson
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) has been a recent trend in education. We set out to understand how K-12 teachers define STEM, their comfort level with teaching STEM, perspectives on the pros and cons of STEM, and the teaching tools and platforms they use. Our research concludes with the implications for teachers, administrators, curriculum developers, and researchers, as well as helpful resources.

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster
Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster
Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials
Information literacy is essential for business students as they prepare for the workplace they will enter after leaving the university. Prior to graduation, students must also prepare for the information needs they will experience during internships and co-ops. To optimize instruction and teach students the information literacy skills they will need on-the-job, librarians need to understand what information sources employers require students to use during internship/co-op experiences and in what ways. In this study we surveyed business students and alumni at a large Midwestern university who had completed an internship or co-op regarding their information use during these workplace experiences.

Creating Awareness Of Autonomous Drones In Stem Career Development, Wei Zakharov
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Drones are a flexible and rapidly advancing technology. The drone’s development can benefit from low power artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Purdue UAS Research and Test Facility (PURT) is hosting “2022 IEEE Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Competition” at the indoor Purdue Airport Hangar on April 8&9, 2022. The goal is to accelerate computer vision / artificial intelligence so that it can run on the embedded computers in UAV.
In the session, participants will meet Purdue faculty and students. PURT program is currently reaching out to high schools in Indiana for STEM career exposure. High school teachers or education program …
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker
Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards, there is a need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with collections decisions. An existing body of literature about the contents of the collections exists, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the business relationships libraries maintain in order to acquire these collections. In this paper, librarians from Purdue University take a critical approach to identifying the values of their institution at multiple levels, including a newly released Libraries strategic plan, to create a values-based evaluation tool for future collection assessment.

Exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers is essential for urban education in order to diminish deficit-based assumptions about who can succeed in STEM. Prepare2Nspire (P2N) acts as an extracurricular tutoring outlet for in-school mathematics learning as well as an opportunity for youth to become exposed to STEM careers through various methods. First, undergraduate mentutors of color represent a number of STEM academic majors. Second, P2N invites STEM professionals of color to discuss how they use various mathematics skills within their career. The purpose of introducing students of color to underrepresented college students and STEM professionals is to …

The Role Of Social And Emotional Learning In The Math Recovery Project, David Feikes, William S. Walker Iii, Madelaine Miller, Lisa Alessandri
Indiana STEM Education Conference
The connections between the Math Recovery Project and social and emotional learning (SEL) are explored. Specific relationships between the project pedagogical approach used and SEL are described. A key emphasis is that all solution methods should be valued to address math recovery and SEL.

This theoretical research brief uses Kaput’s (2008) definition of algebra to describe algebra readiness and algebraic structure as they relate to thinking about algebra and thinking with algebra. Algebra readiness and algebraic structure have been core ideas in our curriculum development work to help students develop conceptual understandings of algebra.

New Nusselt Number Correlations For Developing And Fully Developed Laminar Flows In Concentric Circular Annular Ducts, Kamran Hirbodi, Mahmood Yaghoubi, David M. Warsinger
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Concentric circular annular ducts are common and important elements in fluid flow and heat transfer equipment, including chemical mixing devices and heat exchangers. There are many problems involving heat transfer in concentric annuli which require accurate heat transfer coefficients for laminar and turbulent flows. This study proposes new correlations for the local and average Nusselt numbers in hydrodynamically fully developed and thermally developing or fully developed regions of laminar flows. The correlations are developed based on the results of available series solutions for four fundamental boundary conditions. The correlations use exponential and power law functions of dimensionless axial and radial …
