Researchers and practitioners often exist symbiotically, but this relationship does not always benefit both parties. We here discuss a mutualistic research symbiosis that our organizations have developed over the last decade, the challenges which we have experienced as part of this process, and how our experiences may help others intending to develop such mutualisms. The defining characteristic of our model is that conservation implementers, not investigators, lead the research. This power balance has promoted synergies between researchers and practitioners and has resulted in one of the first ever Randomized Control Trials of a conservation intervention. We have shortened the distance …

Local Dynamics During Thinning And Rupture Of Liquid Sheets Of Power-Law Fluids, Vishrut Garg, Sumeet S. Thete, Christopher R. Anthony, Osman Basaran
School of Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Rupture of liquid sheets of power-law fluids surrounded by a gas is analysed under the competing influences of pressure due to van der Waals attraction, inertia, viscous stress and capillary pressure due to surface tension. Results of a combined theoretical and computational study are presented over the entire range of parameters governing the thinning of a power-law fluid of power-law exponent 00n=1n=1: Newtonian fluid) and Ohnesorge number 0≤Oh0≤Oh<∞0≤OhOh≡μ0/ρh0σ−−−−√Oh≡μ0/ρh0σ, and μ0,ρ,h0" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: normal; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-table; word-spacing: normal; overflow-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; position: relative;">μ0,ρ,h0μ0,ρ,h0 and σ" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: normal; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-table; word-spacing: normal; overflow-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; …∞0≤ohoh≡μ0/ρh0σ−−−−√oh≡μ0/ρh0σ,>

Mechanical Testing Methods For Evaluating Thermoplastic Permanent Pavement Markings, Hyungyung Jo, Matthew Giroux, Kendra Erk, Chelsea Davis
School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
The durability of permanent pavement markings (PPMs) on roadways is important for drivers’ safety. There are two primary mechanical failure modes: cohesive failure that occurs internally in PPMs through small defects, such as internal pores, and adhesive failure that occurs along the interface between PPMs and road surfaces. Thus, it is critical to characterize the intrinsic mechanical properties of PPMs as well as the adhesion of PPMs on road surfaces to understand their mechanical performance and, ultimately, the durability of PPMs. In this study, the flexural modulus and strength of PPMs were characterized via three-point bend testing, while fracture toughness …

An Optimal Sizing Framework For Autonomous Photovoltaic/Hydrokinetic/Hydrogen Energy System Considering Cost, Reliability And Forced Outage Rate Using Horse Herd Optimization, Abdulaziz Alanazi, Mohana Alanazi, Saber Arabi Nowdeh, Almoataz Y. Abdelaziz, Adel El-Shahat
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
The components outage of an energy system weakens its operation probability, which can affect the sizing of that system. An optimal sizing framework is presented for an autonomous hybrid photovoltaic/hydrokinetic/fuel cell (PV/HKT/FC) system with hydrogen storage to supply an annual load demand with forced outage rate (FOR) of the clean production resources based on real environmental information such as irradiance, temperature, and water flow. The sizing problem is implemented with the objective of cost of energy (COE) minimization and also satisfying probability of load supply (PLS) as a reliability constraint. The FOR effect of the photovoltaic and hydrokinetic resources is …

Visual Expertise In An Anatomically-Inspired Model Of The Visual System, Garrison W. Cottrell, Martha Gahl, Shubham Kulkarni
MODVIS Workshop
We report on preliminary results of an anatomically-inspired deep learning model of the visual system and its role in explaining the face inversion effect. Contrary to the generally accepted wisdom, our hypothesis is that the face inversion effect can be accounted for by the representation in V1 combined with the reliance on the configuration of features due to face expertise. We take two features of the primate visual system into account: 1) The foveated retina; and 2) The log-polar mapping from retina to V1. We simulate acquisition of faces, etc., by gradually increasing the number of identities the network learns. …
Reconstruction-As-Feedback Serves As An Effective Attention Mechanism For Object Recognition And Grouping, Seoyoung Ahn, Hossein Adeli, Gregory Zelinsky
Reconstruction-As-Feedback Serves As An Effective Attention Mechanism For Object Recognition And Grouping, Seoyoung Ahn, Hossein Adeli, Gregory Zelinsky
MODVIS Workshop
Our model uses these object reconstructions as a top-down attentional bias for efficiently routing relevant spatial and feature information of the object. This reconstruction-based attention operates on two levels. First, the model has a long-range projection that inhibits irrelevant spatial regions based on the mask generated from the most likely object reconstruction. Second, the model dynamically changes its feature routing weights through local recurrence, where part-whole connection is modulated based on the reconstruction error for each hypothesized object (represented as a slot). This formulation loosely implements biased-competition theory, where the reconstruction error biases a competition between object slots for the …

A Two-Layer Model Explains Higher-Order Feature Selectivity Of V2 Neurons, Timothy D. Oleskiw, Justin D. Lieber, J. Anthony Movshon, Eero P. Simoncelli
MODVIS Workshop
Neurons in cortical area V2 respond selectively to higher-order visual features, such as the quasi-periodic structure of natural texture. However, a functional account of how V2 neurons build selectivity for complex natural image features from their inputs – V1 neurons locally tuned for orientation and spatial frequency – remains elusive.
We made single-unit recordings in area V2 in two fixating rhesus macaques. We presented stimuli composed of multiple superimposed grating patches that localize contrast energy in space, orientation, and scale. V2 activity is modeled via a two-layer linear-nonlinear network, optimized to use a sparse combination of V1-like outputs to account …

A Bayesian Account Of Depth From Shadow, James Elder, Patrick Cavanagh, Roberto Casati
A Bayesian Account Of Depth From Shadow, James Elder, Patrick Cavanagh, Roberto Casati
MODVIS Workshop
When an object casts a shadow on a background surface, the offset of the shadow can be a compelling cue to the relative depth between the object and the background (e.g., Kersten et al 1996, Fig. 1). Cavanagh et al (2021) found that, at least for small shadow offsets, perceived depth scales almost linearly with shadow offset. Here we ask whether this finding can be understood quantitatively in terms of Bayesian decision theory.
Estimating relative depth from shadow offset is complicated by the fact that the shadow offset is co-determined by the slant of the light source relative to the …

Identifying And Localizing Multiple Objects Using Artificial Ventral And Dorsal Visual Cortical Pathways, Zhixian Han, Anne Sereno
MODVIS Workshop
We concluded in our previous study that model cortical visual pathways actively retained information differently according to the different goals of the training tasks. One limitation of our study was that there was only one object in each input image whereas in reality there may be multiple objects in a scene. In our current study, we try to find a brain-like algorithm that can recognize and localize multiple objects.

Model Of Visual Contrast Gain Control And Pattern And Noise Masking, Joshua A. Solomon
Model Of Visual Contrast Gain Control And Pattern And Noise Masking, Joshua A. Solomon
MODVIS Workshop
The first stage of the model can be subdivided into a global contrast sensitivity function (a 2-D log-parabolic filter of spatial frequency), followed by an array of sensors having Gabor-pattern receptive fields. The second stage is contrast gain control. At this stage, sensor outputs are subjected to an expansive transformation. Then the outputs are pooled and used to inhibit (or “normalize”) each other. Inhibition is strongest between sensors with similar preferences for orientation, spatial frequency and spatial location. In the final stage of the model, the nomalized sensor outputs for each image are subjected to Minkowski pooling. Two-alternative, forced-choice detection …

Distribution-Oblivious Online Algorithms For Age-Of-Information Penalty Minimization, Cho-Hsin Tsai, Chih-Chun Wang
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The ever-increasing needs of supporting real-time applications have spurred new studies on minimizing Age-of-Information (AoI), a novel metric characterizing the data freshness of the system. This work studies the single-queue information update system and strengthens the seminal results of Sun et al. on the following fronts: (i) When designing the optimal offline schemes with full knowledge of the delay distributions, a new fixed-point-based method is proposed with quadratic convergence rate, an order-of-magnitude improvement over the state-of-the-art; (ii) When the distributional knowledge is unavailable (which is the norm in practice), two new low-complexity online algorithms are proposed, which provably attain the …

The role of ER Ca2+ release via ryanodine receptors (RyR) in pancreatic β‐cell function is not well defined. Deletion of RyR2 from the rat insulinoma INS‐1 (RyR2KO) enhanced IP3 receptor activity stimulated by 7.5 mM glucose, coincident with reduced levels of the protein IP3 Receptor Binding protein released with Inositol 1,4,5 Trisphosphate (IRBIT). Insulin content, basal (2.5 mM glucose) and 7.5 mM glucose‐stimulated insulin secretion were reduced in RyR2KO and IRBITKO cells compared to controls. INS2 mRNA levels were reduced in both RyR2KO and IRBITKO cells, but INS1 mRNA levels were specifically decreased in RyR2KO cells. Nuclear localization of S‐adenosylhomocysteinase …

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian American Residential Patterns In The San Francisco Bay Area (2000–2019), Minh Q. Nguyen
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
This paper explores three methods of reporting residential patterns: (1) concentration profiles, (2) density maps, and (3) proximity profiles. I analyze U.S. Census data to map and evaluate the residential patterns for Southeast Asian Americans in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. Drawing from the field of urban planning, I report two measures of segregation and concentration (a) dissimilarity indices and (b) spatial proximity indices, and I discuss their limitations. Since mapping and spatial statistics are essential to understanding the histories, development, and advancement of Southeast Asian American communities, it is important to promote their broad usage. …
