Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
During oxidative stress, degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's, and certain cancers are likely to develop. Recent research on canary seed (Phalaris canariensis) peptides has demonstrated the high in vitro antioxidant potential. Thus, this study aimed to assess the cellular and in vivo antioxidant capacity of a low-molecular-weight (<3 kDa) canary seed peptide fraction (CSPF) using Caco-2 cells and the Caenorhabditis elegans model. The results show that the CSPF had no cytotoxicity effect on Caco-2 cells at any tested concentration (0.3-2.5 mg/mL). Additionally, the cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) of the CSPF was concentration-dependent, and the highest activity achieved was 80% by the CSPF at 2.5 mg/mL. Similarly, incubation with …3>
Mysteries Of Cosmic Rays, Eun-Suk Seo
Mysteries Of Cosmic Rays, Eun-Suk Seo
KAUPA Letters
Significant advances have been made in cosmic-ray measurements in recent years, particularly with successful space missions and long-duration balloon flights over Antarctica. The high precision data from various experiments over a wide energy range led to surprising discoveries, such as an excess of positrons and hardening of the elemental spectra. These unexpected spectral features challenge the traditional view that a simple power law can represent cosmic rays, and they provide important constraints on cosmic ray acceleration and propagation models. My research focuses on direct measurements of high-energy cosmic rays from space-based and balloon-borne experiments. Some of our recent findings are …

The number, variety, and acceptance of computer-aided design (CAD) certifications has significantly increased over the last decade with minimal research conducted on their impact. The purpose of this research paper is to describe the perceived value and benefits of the SOLIDWORKS certification program for students and working professionals within the United States SOLIDWORKS community. The SOLIDWORKS certification program, which began in 1998, recently surpassed 500,000 certified users worldwide. It is viewed as a supplier of world-wide, industry-recognized, lifelong nonconforming professional certifications. Survey data from 193 individuals across five geographical regions of the United States indicate that a SOLIDWORKS certification is …

Innovation education experiences are now an expectation of post-secondary learning to help prepare students with creative ways of thinking to address the issues they will face in their lives and careers. Educational institutions seemingly recognize the need to do more to culturally transform teaching and learning to prepare and professionalize students for pushing boundaries in new and bigger ways. As more people question the value of higher education itself, thinking about how innovation education contributes to students’ personal and professional success is both vital and timely. Today, universities are now touting their national rankings related to innovation output and critical …

Piceatannol, A Dietary Polyphenol, Alleviates Adipose Tissue Loss In Pre-Clinical Model Of Cancer-Associated Cachexia Via Lipolysis Inhibition, Jonathan C. Kershaw, Bennett D. Elzey, Xiao Xuan Guo, Kee Hong Kim
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is the nutrition-independent loss of lean muscle and adipose tissues, and results in reduced chemotherapy effectiveness and increased mortality. Preventing adipose loss is considered a key target in the early stages of cachexia. Lipolysis is considered the central driver of adipose loss in CAC. We recently found that piceatannol, but not its analogue resveratrol, exhibits an inhibitory effect on lipolysis. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of piceatannol in cancer-associated lipolysis and cachexia-induced weight loss. Cancer cellinduced lipolysis in adipocytes was stimulated using cancer-conditioned media (CCM) or co-culture with human pancreatic cancer cells …

Actin network architecture and dynamics play a central role in cell contractility and tissue morphogenesis. RhoA-driven pulsed contractions are a generic mode of actomyosin contractility, but the mechanisms under- lying how their specific architecture emerges and how this architecture supports the contractile function of the network remain unclear. Here we show that, during pulsed contractions, the actin network is assembled by two subpopulations of formins: a functionally inactive population (recruited) and formins actively partici- pating in actin filament elongation (elongating). We then show that elongating formins assemble a polar actin network, with barbed ends pointing out of the pulse. Numerical …

Numerical Solutions Of A Gradient-Elastic Kirchhoff Plate Model On Convex And Concave Geometries Using Isogeometric Analysis, Yu Leng, Tianyi Hu, Sthavishtha R. Bhopalam, Hector Gomez
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
In this work, we study numerical solutions of a gradient-elastic Kirchhoff plate model on convex and concave geometries. For a convex plate, we first show the well-posedness of the model. Then, we split the sixth-order partial differential equation (PDE) into a system of three second-order PDEs. The solution of the resulting system coincides with that of the original PDE. This is verified with convergence studies performed by solving the sixth-order PDE directly (direct method) using isogeometric analysis (IGA) and the system of second-order PDEs (split method) using both IGA and C0 finite elements. Next, we …
Experimental Study Of The Level-Dependent Softening Of Carbon Particle Stacks, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton
Experimental Study Of The Level-Dependent Softening Of Carbon Particle Stacks, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Recently, it has been observed that a particle stack’s elastic modulus and damping change with incident levels. Hence, the measured normal incidence absorption coefficient also varies: i.e., the quarter-wave resonance peak shifts to a lower frequency and grows broader under progressively higher incident sound levels. Therefore, models with strain-dependent modulus and damping have been developed for sand particles based on a series of cyclic triaxial tests, while more recently, a velocity-dependent modulus was proposed to model the acoustically induced elastic softening for the hollow glass beads. To investigate the nature of this nonlinear behavior, the absorption coefficients of a 30 …
An Iterative Approach For Estimating The Sound Speed And Attenuation Constant Of Air In A Standing Wave Tube, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Kang Hou, J Stuart Bolton
An Iterative Approach For Estimating The Sound Speed And Attenuation Constant Of Air In A Standing Wave Tube, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Kang Hou, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
n the present work, an iterative method based on the four-microphone transfer matrix approach was developed for evaluating the sound speed and attenuation constant of air within a standing wave tube. In particular, when the air inside the standing wave tube is treated as the material under test, i.e., as if it were a sample of porous material, the transfer matrix approach can be used to identify the air’s acoustic properties. Note that the wavenumber within the tube is complex owing to the formation of a visco-thermal boundary layer on the inner circumference of the tube. Starting from an assumed …

Acoustical Properties Of Granular Aerogel Agglomerates, Amrutha Dasyam, Yutong Xue, Bhisham Sharma, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Granular aerogel agglomerates obtain their unique mechanical and functional properties from their underlying mesoporous structure and intergranular interactions. In this presentation, we focus on the acoustical properties of granular aerogel layers and present experimental results characterizing the absorption behavior of granular silica aerogels with average particle sizes ranging from 5 μm to 2 mm. Our results show that the absorption behavior of granular aerogels strongly depends on the average particle size. To better understand this particle size dependence, we model the granular agglomerates using Biot’s limp and poro-elastic formulation. Finally, we use the developed model to design layered aerogel …

Despite recent advances in cancer therapy, hard-to-reach, unidentified tumors remain a significant clinical challenge. A promising approach is to treat locatable and accessible tumors locally and stimulate antitumor immunity in situ to exert systemic effects against distant tumors. We hypothesize that a carrier of immunotherapeutics can play a critical role in activating antitumor immunity as an immunoadjuvant and a local retainer of drug combinations. Here, we develop a polyethyleneimine-lithocholic acid conjugate (2E′), which forms a hydrophobic core and cationic surface to codeliver hydrophobic small molecules and anionic nucleic acids and activates antigen-presenting cells via the intrinsic activities of 2E′ components. …

Understanding Psychiatric Patients’ Experience Of Virtual Animal-Assisted Therapy Sessions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Haley Scheck, Linzi Williamson, Colleen A. Dell
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Canine animal-assisted therapy (AAT) can improve the mental health and well-being of incarcerated individuals. An in-person AAT program has been offered at the Regional Psychiatric Center (RPC) in Saskatoon, Canada, since 2014 with St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program (SJATDP) dog and handler teams. The program transitioned, for the first time, to a virtual format with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. This exploratory research examines whether and how a virtual offering of AAT at RPC can provide positive benefits to forensic psychiatric patients. Overall, the findings reveal an understanding of the virtual sessions from patient, handler, …

We describe a novel manifestation of rigidochromic behavior in a series of tetranuclear Cu(I)–pyrazolate (Cu4pz4) macrocycles, with implications for solid-state luminescence at deep-blue wavelengths (<460 nm). The Cu4pz4 emissions are remarkably sensitive to structural effects far from the luminescent core: when 3,5-di-tert-butylpyrazoles are used as bridging ligands, adding a C4 substituent can induce a blue shift of more than 100 nm. X-ray crystal and computational analyses reveal that C4 units influence the conformational behavior of adjacent tert-butyl groups, with a subsequent impact on the global conformation of the Cu4pz4 complex. Emissions are mediated primarily through a cluster-centered triplet (3CC) state; compression of the Cu4 cluster into a nearly close-packed geometry prevents the reorganization of its excited-state structure and preserves the 3CC energy at a high level. The remote steric effect may thus offer alternative strategies toward the design of phosphors with rigid excited-state geometries.

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, most OECD countries have announced punishing sanctions against Russia. In addition to targeting financial markets and service sectors, some countries have begun to impose restrictions on exports of Russia's fossil fuels. We analyse a scenario whereby most OECD countries put major restrictions on Russia's energy exports. The short-term implications are likely to be non-trivial for the EU – Russia's largest energy export destination. Households' real income could drop by 0.7 to 1.7 percent (relative to the reference case) with energy prices growing by as much as 11 percent. But in the longer run, …
