The problem considered here is that of binary pulse communication operating in a white noise environment -wherein interfering signal pulses are generated by any of the following causes t (1) A signaling rate larger than channel bandwidths, causing pulse spill over into succeeding bands. (2) Go-channel interference or cross talk on carrier systems. (3) Signal echoes or reflections due to antenna location or mismatch of high frequency components. The optimum correlation receiver is found to be a linear combination of the desired signal pulse plus the interfering pulse. In severe cases significant improvement can be had over a correlation receiver …

The investigation of the stability properties of the equilibrium point of a control system poses various problems -which, even if conceptually very similar, vary greatly in difficulty and in the methods appropriate for their solutions. The first and easier problem is what we may call the stability analysis of a completely defined system: given a particular control system to decide what stability properties its equilibrium point has. The second problem deals with a system having a fixed configuration but with parameters whose numerical values are to be determined. The problem is to find the boundaries in the parameter space at …

Most of the work which has been done with binary communication systems up until now has assumed operation in a symmetric mode. This work is concerned with the problem of evaluating various combinations of modulation and detection in both symmetric and non-symmetric modes of operation. The most frequently used criterion for describing performance in a binary system is total probability of error, A discussion of this and other criteria such as realizable rate and minimum energy per bit factors is given. It has been pointed out that communication systems having wideband signal waveforms have certain advantages over the conventional narrowband systems. This report describes the results of a research program which examined in detail the information efficiency of wideband systems. The results presented in this report fall into three major categories: (1) analysis of systems utilizing linear receivers (i.e. synchronous receivers , etc.), (2) analysis of system utilizing non-linear receivers, and (3) analysis and description of methods which can be used for realizing certain optimum and sub-optimum wideband receivers. The concept of an open loop Adaptive Communication link is established as one which is capable of monitoring the medium through which it must perform while simultaneously transmitting information and continuously adjusting its modes of operation so as to optimize its performance with respect to a performance criterion chosen a priori. Statistical methods are applied to the adaptive communication problem. Communicating through a random multipath channel with additive noise is considered. The transmitter is specified as one which transmits one of two possible noise-like waveforms which are assumed to be known at the receiver. At any time, it is postulated …

MICROWAVE ENERGY CONVERSION Rectification by Semiconductor Diodes* A relatively simple method has been devised for mounting 680-1N830 diodes in a series parallel combination to form a single phase full-wave rectifier for operation at microwave frequencies. The efficiencies attained at 2440 Mc are as follows; Efficiency of 70% for 9 watts output, 65% for 18.7 watts, 55$ for 30.7 watts and 50% for 34 watts output.' Conversion by Bulk Semiconductor. An analytical study of bulk semiconductor conversion of microwave is presented. The contribution of this thesis is the introduction and development of the variable gradient method of generating Liapunov functions. A Liapunov function, V, is considered to be generated if the form of V is not known before the generating procedure is applied. Two previous attempts at the generation of Liapunov functions to prove global asymptotic stability for nonlinear autonomous systems have been made. These attempts are summarized and evaluated in some detail, as they form the basis for the variable gradient approach proposed in this thesis.
