Literature And Economy In Portuguese-Speaking Southern Africa, Thomas Waller Aug 2022

Literature And Economy In Portuguese-Speaking Southern Africa, Thomas Waller

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In “Literature and Economy in Portuguese-speaking Southern Africa”, Thomas Waller offers a comparative reading of literary responses to neoliberalization in Portuguese-speaking southern Africa. Reading the proliferation of spectral effects in the Mozambican literature of the late 1980s alongside dystopian depictions of societal collapse in contemporary Angolan fiction, he suggests that writers in the two states have used distinctive aesthetic idioms to register the reintegration of southern Africa into the neoliberal world-system. In the fiction of Mozambican writers Aldino Muianga and Aníbal Aleluia, he shows how the legacy of colonial underdevelopment and its role in the transition to neoliberalism in Mozambique …

Conjunctures, Commodities, And Social State Marxism, Stephen Shapiro

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article, “Conjunctures, Commodities, and Social State Marxism,” Stephen Shapiro discusses our current moment as the conjuncture of three temporalities: a secular trend of centrist liberalism, a Kress cycle of managerial capitalism, and three Kondratieff waves. These can be understood by the addition of implied terms in Marx’s advanced discussion of the commodity-form through an approach that Shapiro calls Social State Marxism.

Everyday Consumption In Twenty-First-Century Brazilian Fiction, Lígia Bezerra Aug 2022

Everyday Consumption In Twenty-First-Century Brazilian Fiction, Lígia Bezerra

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Everyday Consumption in Twenty-First-Century Brazilian Fiction is the first in-depth study to map out the representation of consumption in contemporary Brazilian prose, highlighting how our interactions with commodities connect seemingly disconnected areas of everyday life, such as eating habits, the growth of prosperity theology, and ideas of success and failure. It is also the first text to provide a pluralistic perspective on the representation of consumption in this fiction that moves beyond the concern with aesthetic judgment of culture based on binaries such as good/bad or elevated/degraded that have largely informed criticism on this body of literary work. Current Brazilian …

In this study, a model is developed for a comparative assessment of three flight missions of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) based on their power profiles in order to identify future technical research priorities and possible improvements in operational management. The model describes the missions (transport, facade inspection, drone show) based on the maneuver-specific parameters for hovering flight, vertical flight, and horizontal flight and calculates the respective power profiles of the missions based on the input parameters of a reference UAV with a battery-powered electric motor. The power profiles of the investigated missions show that the maximum powers occur during …

Origin Of The Electroarthrogram And Streaming Potentials In Compressed Cartilage, Charles F. Babbs Aug 2022

Origin Of The Electroarthrogram And Streaming Potentials In Compressed Cartilage, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Background: The electroarthrogram (EAG) is a recording of electrical potentials near a joint, usually a knee, that are generated when the articular cartilage is rhythmically compressed by weight bearing. Physics-based, quantitative prediction of the magnitude of the electroarthrogram remains an open problem. Methods and Results: A new electromechanical model is created to describe viscous displacement of sodium ions from fixed sulfonate anions in the cartilage matrix by radial flow of interstitial fluid during side-to-side shifting of body weight. The viscous force exerted by fluid flow slightly displaces the Na+ ion in its potential energy well. The ion pairs form electrical …

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

The alteration in skeletal muscle fiber is a critical factor affecting livestock meat quality traits and human metabolic diseases. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a diverse class of non-coding RNAs with a length of more than 200 nucleotides. However, the mechanisms underlying the regulation of lncRNAs in skeletal muscle fibers remain elusive. To understand the genetic basis of lncRNA-regulated skeletal muscle fiber development, we performed a transcriptome analysis to identify the key lncRNAs affecting skeletal muscle fiber and meat quality traits on a pig model. We generated the lncRNA expression profiles of fast-twitch Biceps femoris (Bf) and slow-twitch Soleus (Sol) …

Impact Of Spray Coating On The Performance Of Hydrophobic Membranes, Dominick J. Maiorano, Hamid Fattahijuybari, David Warsinger Aug 2022

Impact Of Spray Coating On The Performance Of Hydrophobic Membranes, Dominick J. Maiorano, Hamid Fattahijuybari, David Warsinger

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Membrane distillation (MD) is a rapidly emerging water treatment technology used to combat the global water crisis. Membrane pore wetting is a primary barrier to widespread industrial use of MD. The primary causes of membrane wetting are membrane fouling and an exceedance of liquid entry pressure. The development of different types of polymer membranes and the use of pretreatment have led to significant movement towards the prevention of wetting in MD. We sought to take a new approach to combat membrane wetting that involves coating these membranes with hydrophilic chemical compounds, which consequently would decrease their air permeability. Pulling data …

Evaluation Of The Chloride Ions Penetration Into Concrete Structure With The Surface Penetrants Served In Cold Marine Environment For 20 Years, Yanhua Kuang, Yuki Sakoi Associate Professor, Naoto Takashima Postgraduate, Minoru Aba Professor, Yoichi Tsukinaga Professor,

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures

The intrusion of chloride ions in concrete served in the marine environment is the leading cause of corrosion of steel bars. This paper examined the result of a long-term survey on the actual structure (the Tomakomai breakwater) treated with a set of penetrants partly. The survey was conducted twice, in the 12th and 20th years after construction.

The results showed that the penetrants could effectively reduce the penetration of chloride ions into concrete. After using the penetrants, the calculated surface chloride ion concentration was decreased by 5.04%/72.18% (the 12th year/the 20th year). As the service years increase, surface chloride ion …

Ewom Platforms As Productivity Catalyzers For Travel Agencies: A Two-Stage Double Bootstrap Data Envelopment Analysis, Tomas Saralegui

ITSA 2022 Gran Canaria - 9th Biennial Conference: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Global Tourism Strategies After Covid 19

The travel industry, and in particular travel agencies, face a severe challenge to increase productivity. In a fast-paced digitalization context, embracing ICTs to tackle this challenge should be part of COVID-19 recovery strategies. Electronic word of mouth (eWOM) could allow better learning processes, improve communication with customers, and serve as a remarkable diffusion channel. However, this channel is not yet fully embraced by the sector. This research, delimited to Spanish travel agencies in the period 2012-2019, applies a two-stage double bootstrap data envelopment analysis to assess whether eWOM and how firms manage eWOM, contributes to achieving higher levels of efficiency. …

The Impact Of Service Dogs On Objective And Perceived Sleep Quality For Veterans With Ptsd, Madhuri Vempati, Elise A. Miller, Sarah C. Leighton, Leanne O. Nieforth, Marguerite O’Haire Jul 2022

The Impact Of Service Dogs On Objective And Perceived Sleep Quality For Veterans With Ptsd, Madhuri Vempati, Elise A. Miller, Sarah C. Leighton, Leanne O. Nieforth, Marguerite O’Haire

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

One in four post-9/11 veterans (Fulton et al., 2015) have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), facing sleep disruptions as one of their most common symptoms. Service dogs have become an increasingly popular complementary intervention and anecdotes suggest they may impact sleep for veterans with PTSD. There is a need for empirical investigation into these claims through measurement and analysis of sleep quality.

The purpose of this study was to longitudinally investigate the impact of service dogs on sleep quality through both objective and subjective measures.

Participants in the treatment group (n=92) received a service dog after baseline, while …

Pandemic Phase: Where’S Democracy Now?, Andrea Bennett-Kinne Jul 2022

Pandemic Phase: Where’S Democracy Now?, Andrea Bennett-Kinne

Education and Culture

This essay draws from a pragmatic feminist approach. It outlines the importance of relational ethics and Deweyan democracy to educational practices using the exploitative situation of emergency remote learning and women teachers to show the impact of systems that were in place before the COVID-19 pandemic, but which have become more concerning within those parameters. Such systems include the educational technology industry and the datafication of education. These systems rest in neoliberalism and concern their means and ends with economic gain instead of the importance of human relations. The essay suggests that centering relational ethics and relying on educational democracy …

Feminist-Pragmatist Perspectives On Online Education: Challenging And Changing Online Educational Conversation, Krissah Marga B. Taganas Jul 2022

Feminist-Pragmatist Perspectives On Online Education: Challenging And Changing Online Educational Conversation, Krissah Marga B. Taganas

Education and Culture

This paper is exploratory in a sense: I explore the possibility of feminist pragmatism as a pedagogical position compatible with online education. I argue in this paper that feminist pragmatism (FP) can be an important philosophic resource to continually challenge and change the online educational conversation. Contemporary feminist pragmatism is a conscious effort of women philosophers who took inspiration from the works of major women pragmatist thinkers, as well as others, especially John Dewey. Early women pragmatists developed a fruitful collegial relationship with John Dewey and collaborated on studies and issues that shaped Dewey’s pragmatism. FP’s main tenets include an …

How To Teach Machines In Artificial Intelligence? Technical Education In John Dewey, Gilbert Simondon And Machine Learning, Olivier Del Fabbro Jul 2022

How To Teach Machines In Artificial Intelligence? Technical Education In John Dewey, Gilbert Simondon And Machine Learning, Olivier Del Fabbro

Education and Culture

A society that uses drills and conditioning to train its machine learning models risks creating an alienated situation between human and machine in social life, as these teaching methods generate a lack of responsibility for the actions produced by such machines. Both John Dewey and Gilbert Simondon present conceptions and ideas that shed a different light on such alienated human– machine relationships in machine learning: that is, a critique of mere drilling and training as an educational method; the mode of existence of technical objects; and the importance of experience and practicality, for example, learning by doing. After giving an …

Responsible Imagineering: John Dewey's Pluralistic Ethics And Technological Innovation, John A. Machielsen Jul 2022

Responsible Imagineering: John Dewey's Pluralistic Ethics And Technological Innovation, John A. Machielsen

Education and Culture

I argue for taking John Dewey’s pluralistic ethics as a starting point, or embedded practice, from and in which technological innovations are conceptualized, critiqued, designed, tested, and eventually implemented. Dewey reconstructs human reason into operational intelligence where all behavior becomes gradually imaginative. I take Dewey’s view of moral deliberation as a basis for a responsible process-based methodology combining creative technological design with the training of imaginative prospection. I further use Dewey’s conception of technology that holds that implements, but also ideas and concepts are tools, forms of technology. I end by looking at the educational impact for the creative industries.
