A Case Study Of Soil Erosion Detection By Digital Analysis Of The Remotely Sensed Multispectral Landsat Scanner Data Of A Semi-Arid Land In Southern India, V. Guruswamy, Steve J. Kristof, Marion Baumgardner Jan 1980

A Case Study Of Soil Erosion Detection By Digital Analysis Of The Remotely Sensed Multispectral Landsat Scanner Data Of A Semi-Arid Land In Southern India, V. Guruswamy, Steve J. Kristof, Marion Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

Soil forms one of the vital natural resources in that it is useful for agricultural and engineering purposes as the Chief plant supporting material for producing food and fibre and as construction material for raising buildings respectively. Soil erosion caused by the action of wind, water, ice and gravity over a terrain requires, therefore, prompt detection and implementation of proper preventive/remedial measures to conserve the soil resource. Soil inventory to assess its quantity and quality by the conventional field survey methods consumes considerable manpower with time and money and the remote sensing technology offers in this context, a powerful tool …

Application Of Multispectral Reflectance Studies Of Soils: Pre-Landsat, S. J. Kristof, M. R. Baumgardner, R. A. Weismiller, S. M. Davis

LARS Technical Reports

It was recognized in the 1960's that measuring the spectral, spatial and temporal variation of electromagnetic fields reflected and emitted from the Earth's surface had many potential applications in the field of agriculture. As a result, computer-implemented pattern recognition techniques were used to analyze multispectral data for the purpose of delineating soil differences. Spectral data were obtained (1) in the laboratory by scanning soil samples with a double-beam spectrophotometer (Beckman DK-2A) and (2) in the field by scanning large areas of soils with an airborne multispectral scanner.

The results obtained through this early research clearly illustrated relationships between the reflected …

Vol. Ii. Research In The Application Of Spectral Data To Crop Identification And Assessment, C. S. T. Daughtry, M. M. Hixson

LARS Technical Reports

Four investigations of the application of spectral data to crop identification and assessment are discussed in this volume. Part A discusses the development of spectromet crop development stage models. Several "state-of-the-art" development stage models for corn and soybeans were reviewed. One photothermal model and four thermal models were selected and evaluated.

Part B describes an investigation of spectral data as a source of information for crop yield models. Intercepted solar radiation and soil productivity are identified as factors related to yield which can be estimated from spectral data.

Several techniques for machine classification of remotely sensed data for crop inventory …

Detection Of Salinity From Landsat Data, M. Medina, F. Ramirez Jan 1980

Detection Of Salinity From Landsat Data, M. Medina, F. Ramirez

LARS Symposia

The detection and control of salinity in crop lands is very important t o the national agricultural development, because the salinity affects directly crop production.

The Ministry of Agricultural and Water Resources has been working since 1977 on the detection of salinity using Landsat data, and some methods using visual and computer assistance techniques have been developed.

The visual analysis is done using enlargements of Landsat frames with the aid of very powerful cannon projectors and combinations of different gelatine color filters (red, blue and green). For example, with the use of band No. 5 over laying a green filter, …
