Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs
Improved Oxygen Delivery During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compressions, William D. Voorhees, Mark J. Niebauer, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The ability of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to deliver oxygen to tissues was evaluated. The method utilizes standard CPR techniques with the addition of manual abdominal compressions (100 mm Hg) interposed between chest compressions, and is termed interposed abdominal compression-CPR (IAC-CPR). Oxygen delivery was measured by a spirometer in a closed circuit designed to permit positive-pressure ventilation synchronized with mechanical chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs. In each dog, trials of IAC-CPR and standard CPR were alternated every five minutes during a 30-minute period. Arterial and central venous blood pressures, oxygen consumption, …

Relationship Of Blood Pressure And Flow During Cpr To Chest Compression Amplitude: Evidence For An Effective Compression Threshold, Charles F. Babbs, W D. Voorhees, K R. Fitzgerald, H R. Holmes, L A. Geddes
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to investigate the importance of the depth of chest compression in producing effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in animals, as indicated by cardiac output and mean arterial blood pressure. Cardiac output was measured by a modified indicator dilution technique in 8 anesthetized dogs, 6 to 12 kg body weight, during repeated 2-minute episodes of electrically induced ventricular fibrillation and CPR provided by a mechanical chest compressor and ventilator (Thumper®). Chest compression exceeding a threshold value (x0) between 1.5 and 3.0 cm was required in each animal to produce measurable cardiac output. In particular, …

An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders
An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders
Libraries Research Publications
Reviews in Choice for 310 books were analyzed for how highly they were recommended for college libraries. Each book was given a rating on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect this recommendation. Circulation records for each book covering a 2 to 3.5 year span in the Purdue General Library were also obtained, and a correlation was used to establish a relation between level of recommendation and the use of the book. A Spearman rank order correlation of .137 (p = .008) was found, indicating only a weak relationship between the levels of recommendation and use. When the sample …
The Calibration Of Landsat Mss Data As An Analysis Tool, L. A. Bartolucci, S. M. Davis
The Calibration Of Landsat Mss Data As An Analysis Tool, L. A. Bartolucci, S. M. Davis
LARS Technical Reports
The primary aim of an analysis of Landsat data is to obtain as much useful and reliable information as possible about the various earth-surface materials present in a scene. To assist the analyst in accomplishing this objective, quantitative data analysis techniques have been developed and successfully applied in computer-aided mapping, inventorying, and monitoring of earth resources. To increase the effectiveness of these techniques, the analyst must have a thorough understanding of the spectral behavior of earth-surface features, the radiometric characteristics of the digital Landsat MSS data, and the fundamental concepts supporting each numerical analysis function used.
The purpose of this …

The Effect Of Feature Scaling On The Clustering Of Landsat Mss Data, L. A. Bartolucci, S. M. Davis, P. H. Swain
LARS Technical Reports
Nonsupervised classification by clustering has been shown to be a very important tool in the analysis of satellite remote sensing data. However, clustering algorithms which use Euclidean distance as a measure of similarity are highly sensitive to scaling differences among the variables which participate in the clustering process. Since the Landsat MSS spectral bands have different ranges and different calibration functions, this scaling sensitivity is likely to have a significant impact on the results of clustering Landsat MSS data, as is demonstrated by the experiments described in this paper. A rescaling strategy for Landsat MSS data is recommended which seems …

Satellite Image Interpretation And Laboratory Spectral Reflectance Measurements Of Saline And Gypsiferous Soils Of West Baghdad, Iraq, S. M. H. Al-Mahawili, M. F. Baumgardner, R. A. Weismiller, W. N. Melhorn
LARS Technical Reports
Salinization is a major factor in the deterioration of irrigated alluvial soils. To establish early detection measures to prevent soil salinity, panchromatic black and white aerial photographs, standard soil surveys and laboratory measures have been used to achieve such a goal since the 1930's.
Not until the 1960's was spectral reflectance, in multiband photography, used in an indirect detection of the effect of soil salinity upon crop leaves.
To study the specific spectral reflectance characteristics of different soil salinity levels, an area located to the west of Baghdad, Iraq was selected.
The applied research methodology was accomplished in three phases: …

Bolivian Digital Geographic Information System, L. A. Bartolucci, T. L. Philips, C. R. Valenzuela
LARS Technical Reports
Since the advent of the first Landsat satellite, Bolivia has successfully obtained information related to its natural resources. It was soon realized that in order to be able to handle the enormous amounts of data that were being generated, it was necessary to have a system that would readily store, retrieve and manipulate these data. This need was also recognized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which provided the funds through an agreement for technical cooperation ATN/SF-1812-BO.
Although there are available a number of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at various stages of development ,6 Bolivia was interested primarily in a …

Estimation Of A Remote Sensing System Point-Spread Function From Measured Imagery, C. D. Mcgillem, P. E. Anuta, E. Malaret, K. B. Yu
LARS Technical Reports
Satellite-based multispectral imaging systems have been in operation since 1972 and the latest in the Landsat series of sensors was launched in July 1982. One system parameter of interest is resolution and this paper discusses experiments to determine the actual overall resolution after launch. Atmospheric effects and postprocessing effects add to the prelaunch optical resolution. Scene structures, such as roads and field edges, were used with numerical estimation procedures to predict resolution in Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper imagery. A nominal resolution of 39 meters was determined as compared to the predicted 30 m prelaunch value.
