Computer Analysis Of X-Band Radar Data, D. J. Knowlton, R. M. Hoffer

Dual polarized X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data were obtained for a test site in South Carolina containing a variety of forest and agricultural cover types, as well as water and urban areas. The optically correlated images were digitized with a scanning microdensitometer using a 40 µm aperture. Digital registration of the two polarizations was more difficult than anticipated due to geometric variations in the imagery. However, a successful registration was obtained, and a "degraded" 30 m resolution data set was generated in addition to the original 15 m resolution data set.

This study investigated computer classification performances for forest and other cover types using Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) data collected by NASA's NSOOl scanner. Specifically, results based on the use of a common feature selection measure -- transformed divergence (TD) -- were compared to those based on a principal component transformation for the purpose of evaluating the capabilities of each technique to define: (1) the optimum dimensionality for data sets of this type, and (2) the relative significance of the various wavelength bands with respect to their ability to discriminate among the various cover classes. These Guidelines have been prepared as a reference for highway maintenance personnel responsible for patching pavements and are intended as a reference for the patching crew. The Guidelines are not intended to be a detailed reference describing the successes and failures of techniques and materials used by various agencies to construct pavement patches. The patching techniques and materials presented in these Guidelines are those which have been developed by research and successfully used by various agencies to patch highway pavements under various climatic or weather conditions.

Gossans in the Mt. Bross area of the Alma mining district, Colorado, were characterized by use of iron oxide mineralogy and spectral reflectance as a possible aid to mineral exploration using remotely sensed data. Mine site gossan samples produced by the weathering of lead-zinc replacement deposits were found to be composed primarily of goethite, and nonmine samples produced by the weathering of pyrite in the local country rock were found to be composed primarily of jarosite. Because the automatic implantable defibrillator may be used in patients having ischemic heart disease, it is important to know whether myocardial ischemia changes the threshold for ventricular defibrillation under experimental conditions simulating automatic internal defibrillation. We determined changes in ventricular defibrillation threshold following coronary occlusion, using an electrode catheter designed for use with an automatic implantable defibrillator. Acute myocardial ischemia was produced without thoracotomy in 10 dogs (experimental group) by embolization with a plastic bead injected via a catheter into the left coronary artery. Two simple methods are presented that allow positive identification of the accuracy and precision of the microsphere technique and a quick verification of sphere entrapment in tumor vessels. A known flow of Ringer's solution from a motor-driven syringe is perfused through the rat's isolated systemic circulation from left ventricle to right atrium and collected in a funnel. Using this preparation, total blood flow in rats measured with radioactive microspheres injected into the left ventricle was 97% of actual flow. The coefficient of variation (standard deviation/mean) of the microsphere measurements was 0.22. In the same preparation, non-entrapment of microspheres in subcutaneous …
