A Laboratory Experiment On Robot Contouring With Force Feedback, Shaheen Ahmad Mar 1987

A Laboratory Experiment On Robot Contouring With Force Feedback, Shaheen Ahmad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we describe a laboratory experiment which is part of a laboratory orientated robotics class taken by seniors and first year graduate students. This experiment is designed to introduce students to real-time robot control system hardware and software. The experiment attempts to fortify material covered m an introductory (non laboratory orientated) class on robotics. The issues covered by this experiments include: kinematics, dynamics, robot drive mechanisms, interfacing of sensors and force control aspects. Students were also required to learn many aspects of real time programming for control applications. We document this entire experiment so it may be reorganized …

Sensors: A Key To Successful Robot-Based Assembly, Shaheen Ahmad Mar 1987

Sensors: A Key To Successful Robot-Based Assembly, Shaheen Ahmad

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Computer controlled robots offer a number of significant advantages in manufacturing and assembly tasks. These include consistent product reliability and the ability to work in harsh environments. The programmable nature of robotic automation allows the possibility of applying them to a number of tasks. In particular, significant savings can be expected in batch production, if robots can be applied to produce numbers of products successfully without plant re-tooling. Unfortunately, despite considerable progress made in robot programming [Lozano-Perez 83] [Paul 81] ;Ahmad 84] [Graver et al. 84] [Bonner & Shin 82] and in sensing [Gonzalez & Safabakhsh 82] [Fu 82] [Hall …

Efficient Parallel Algorithm For Robot Forward Dynamics Computation, C. S. G. Lee, P. R. Chang Feb 1987

Efficient Parallel Algorithm For Robot Forward Dynamics Computation, C. S. G. Lee, P. R. Chang

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Computing the robot forward dynamics is important for real-time computer simulation of robot arm motion. Two efficient parallel algorithms for computing the forward dynamics for real-time simulation were developed to be implemented on an SIMD computer with n. processors, where h is the number of degrees-of-freedom of the manipulator. The first parallel algorithm, based on the Composite Rigid-Body method, generates the inertia matrix using the parallel Newton-Euler algorithm, the parallel linear recurrence algorithm, and the row-sweep algorithm, and then inverts the inertia matrix to obtain the joint acceleration vector desired at time t. The time complexity of this parallel algorithm …

A Cordic-Based Pipelined Architecture For Direct Kinematic Position Computation, C. S. G. Lee, C. L. Chen Feb 1987

A Cordic-Based Pipelined Architecture For Direct Kinematic Position Computation, C. S. G. Lee, C. L. Chen

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The kinematic equation of an fi-link manipulator involves the chain product of n homogeneous link transformation matrices and reveals the requirement for computing a large set of elementary operations: multiplications, additions, and trigonometric functions. However, these elementary operations, in general, cannot be efficiently computed in general-purpose uniprocessor computers. The CORDIC (COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer) algorithms are the natural candidates for efficiently computing these elementary operations and the interconnection of these CORDIC processors to exploit the great potential of pipelining provides a better solution for computing the direct kinematics. This paper describes a novel CORDIC-based pipelined architecture for the computation of …

Experimental And Theoretical Studies On Design Calculations For Latent Heat Storage, Dieter Lindemann Jan 1987

Experimental And Theoretical Studies On Design Calculations For Latent Heat Storage, Dieter Lindemann

Open Access Theses

Research was conducted to obtain design data of latent heat-of-fusion thermal energy storage (LHTES) devices. The devices studied utilize a porous medium (PM) to increase the effective conductivity of the storage system. Therefore the melting and freezing process is accelerated. Metal shavings and metal spheres were used as porous media and water as the phase change medium (PCM). A simple experimental method to measure the conductivity of a water-metal mixture or ice-metal mixture was applied to obtain conductivity data. These measurements can be considered fairly accurate because measured conductivity of pure water and of pure ice agreed very well with …
