Uncertainty Management And Evidential Reasoning With Structured Knowledge, L. W. Chang, R. L. Kashyap May 1989

Uncertainty Management And Evidential Reasoning With Structured Knowledge, L. W. Chang, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This research addresses two intensive computational problems of reasoning under uncertainty in artificial intelligence. The first problem is to study the strategy for belief propagation over networks. The second problem is to explore properties of operations which construe the behaviour of those factors in the networks. In the study of operations for computing belief combination over a network model, the computational characteristics of operations are modelled by a set of axioms which are in conformity with human inductive and deductive reasoning. According to different topological connection of networks, we investigate four types of operations. These operations successfully present desirable results …

Vision-Guided Mobile Robot Navigation, C. Lopez-Abadia, A. C. Kak May 1989

Vision-Guided Mobile Robot Navigation, C. Lopez-Abadia, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report discusses the use of vision feedback for autonomous navigation by a mobile robot in indoor environments. In particular, we have discussed in detail the issues of camera calibration and how binocular and monocular vision may be utilized for self-location by the robot. A noteworthy feature of monocular vision is that the camera image is compared with a CAD model of the interior of the hallways using the PSEIKI reasoning system; this reasoning system allows the comparison to take place at different levels of geometric detail.

Current Controlled Brushless Dc Motor Drive, Fadi Abdal May 1989

Current Controlled Brushless Dc Motor Drive, Fadi Abdal

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Current-control strategies for a three-phase four-pole brushless dc motor are developed and analyzed. The brushless dc motor and the voltage-fed inverter used in the system are first described. Voltage control through pulse width modulation is presented and then the current-controlled brushless dc drive system is examined in detail. A relationship between the inverter source voltage magnitude and the motor’s parameters is determined. Feedback control schemes are studied, and lastly the dynamic performance using computer simulation is presented.

Theory And Simulation Of The Brushless Dc 120° Inverter System, Scott D. Sudhoff May 1989

Theory And Simulation Of The Brushless Dc 120° Inverter System, Scott D. Sudhoff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The brushless dc motor- inverter system is becoming increasingly popular in servo and variable speed applications. One type of inverter, the 120° inverter, does not require rotor position sensing hardware. In this thesis, a theory of the brushless dc motor with a 120° inverter is set forth and used to create a fast simulation procedure for steady state operation. This simulation is well suited for evaluation of torque speed curves since the effects of changes of system parameters can be rapidly assessed. Furthermore, it was found that the system operation may be classified into a finite number of distinct operating …

Report On A Periodic Extrinsic Infrared (Peir) Photoconductor, P. E. Welsh, R. J. Schwartz May 1989

Report On A Periodic Extrinsic Infrared (Peir) Photoconductor, P. E. Welsh, R. J. Schwartz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An infrared photoconductor, designated as the Periodic Extrinsic InfraRed (PEIR) photoconductor, is proposed. A PEIR photoconductor will be useful for detecting wavelengths from 7 μm (1400 cm-1) to longer than 100 μm (100 cm-1). Through epitaxial growth, a PEIR photoconductor is made up of heavily doped layers separated by lightly doped layers. The heavily doped layers are doped such that an impurity band forms but are not doped high enough to cause the impurity band to merge with the conduction or valence band. The lightly doped layers are used to confine the carriers in the impurity bands and consequently, conduction …

Finite Memory Recursive Solutions In Stochastic Models: Equilibrium And Transient Analysis, G. Rama Murthy, Edward J. Coyle May 1989

Finite Memory Recursive Solutions In Stochastic Models: Equilibrium And Transient Analysis, G. Rama Murthy, Edward J. Coyle

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

G/M/1 and M/G/1-type Markov processes provide natural models for widely differing stochastic phenomena. Efficient recursive solutions for the equilibrium and transient analysis of these processes are therefore of considerable interest. In this direction, a new class of recursive solutions are proposed for the analysis of M/G/l and G/M/l type processes. In this report, the notion of when a process is LEDI-complete, which means it has complete Level Entrance Direction Information, is introduced for G/M/1-type Markov processes. This notion leads to a new class of recursive solutions, called finite-memory recursive solutions, for the equilibrium probabilities of a class of G/M/ 1-type …

The Design Of Equal Complexity Fir Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks Incorporating Symmetries, Eric Viscito, Jan Allebach May 1989

The Design Of Equal Complexity Fir Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks Incorporating Symmetries, Eric Viscito, Jan Allebach

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report, we present a new approach to the design of perfect reconstruction filter banks (PRFB’s) which have equal length FIR analysis and synthesis filters. To achieve perfect reconstruction, necessary and sufficient conditions are incorporated directly in a numerical design procedure as a set of quadratic equality constraints among the impulse response coefficients of the filters. Any symmetry inherent in a particular application, such as quadrature mirror symmetry, linear phase, or symmetry between analysis and synthesis filters, may be exploited to reduce the number of variables and constraints in the design problem. A novel feature of our new approach …

An Expert System For Unit Commitment, R. E. Tyson Apr 1989

An Expert System For Unit Commitment, R. E. Tyson

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Methods used to solve the unit commitment problem of power generating systems should give a solution which is both feasible and optimal, and should be flexible enough to be rapidly and easily reimplemented in response to a changing and unpredictable environment. An expert system is proposed which incorporates both heuristic and numerical optimization methods to achieve such a solution. The expert system acts like a preprocessor for data which is to be used by a Dynamic Programming routine to determine the most economical schedule of generating units. After the schedule has been generated, the expert system acts like a postprocessor …

Insb/Cdte Heterostructures Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Jack L. Glenn Jr, Sungki O., Robert L. Gunshor, Leslie A. Kolodziejski Apr 1989

Insb/Cdte Heterostructures Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Jack L. Glenn Jr, Sungki O., Robert L. Gunshor, Leslie A. Kolodziejski

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Given the potential for quantum effect device application, the growth, by molecular beam epitaxy, and characterization of InSb-CdTe heterostructures is described. Two procedures for growth of these heterostructures are employed. For the growth of InSb/CdTe double heterostructures, InSb and CdTe layers are grown in separate MBE growth chambers connected via an ultrahigh vacuum transfer module. Here, antimony originating from a compound InSb source oven is used for growth of InSb layers. For the growth of CdTe/InSb multiple quantum well structures, InSb and CdTe layers are grown in a single MBE growth chamber, where antimony is derived from an antimony cracking …

Changes In Expired End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation In Dogs: A Prognostic Guide For Resuscitation Efforts, Karl B. Kern, Arthur B. Sanders, William D. Voorhees, Charles F. Babbs, Willis A. Tacker, Gordon A. Ewy

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Expired end-tidal carbon dioxide (PCO2) measurements made during cardiopulmonary resuscitation have correlated with cardiac output and coronary perfusion pressure when wide ranges of blood flow are included. The utility of such measurements for predicting resuscitation outcome during the low flow state associated with closed chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation remains uncertain. Expired end-tidal PCO2 and coronary perfusion pressures were measured in 15 mongrel dogs undergoing 15 min of closed chest cardiopulmonary resuscitation after a 3 min period of untreated ventricular fibrillation. In six successfully resuscitated dogs, the mean expired end-tidal PCO2 was significantly higher than that in nine nonresuscitated dogs only after …
