A Stochastic Modeling Approach To Region-And Edge-Based Image Segmentation, Aly A. Farag, Edward J. Delp May 1990

A Stochastic Modeling Approach To Region-And Edge-Based Image Segmentation, Aly A. Farag, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The purpose of image segmentation is to isolate objects in a scene from the background. This is a very important step in any computer vision system since various tasks, such as shape analysis and object recognition, require accurate image segmentation. Image segmentation can also produce tremendous data reduction. Edge-based and region-based segmentation have been examined and two new algorithms based on recent results in random field theory have been developed. The edge-based segmentation algorithm uses the pixel gray level intensity information to allocate object boundaries in two stages: edge enhancement, followed by edge linking. Edge enhancement is accomplished by maximum …

The Damping Of Panels By Thick Layers Of Elastic Porous Media, Nae-Ming Stuart Shiau, T J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton May 1990

The Damping Of Panels By Thick Layers Of Elastic Porous Media, Nae-Ming Stuart Shiau, T J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In this paper a technique is presented for calculating the response of a panel to a line force input when loaded by both a finite‐depth layer of elastic porous material and a heavy fluid. Damping theories normally require that an attached damping layer be thin compared to the flexural wavelength in the base panel. Here this requirement is avoided by allowing explicitly for wave propagation within the damping layer. Specifically, the porous damping layer is modeled using a theory derived by Biot that allows for the existence of two dilatational waves and a transverse wave. Conditions required to couple the …

Sensor Array Signal Processing Via Eigenanalysis Of Matrix Pencils Composed Of Data Derived From Translationally Invariant Subarrays, Demosthenis Stavrinides, Michael D. Zoltowski May 1990

Sensor Array Signal Processing Via Eigenanalysis Of Matrix Pencils Composed Of Data Derived From Translationally Invariant Subarrays, Demosthenis Stavrinides, Michael D. Zoltowski

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An algorithm is developed for estimating characteristic parameters associated with a "scene" of radiating sources given the data derived from a pair of translationally invariant arrays, the X and Y arrays, which are displaced relative to one another. The algorithm is referred to as PR O—E SPRIT and is predicated on invoking two recent mathematical developments: (1) the SVD based solution to the Procrustes problem of optimally approximating an invariant subspace rotation and (2) the Total Least Squares method for perturbing each of the two estimates of a common subspace in a "minimal" fashion until the two perturbed spaces are …

Study Of A New Silicon Epitaxy Technique: Confined Lateral Selective Epitaxial Growth, Peter J. Schubert, Gerold W. Neudeck May 1990

Study Of A New Silicon Epitaxy Technique: Confined Lateral Selective Epitaxial Growth, Peter J. Schubert, Gerold W. Neudeck

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This work describes a significant new advance in the technique of silicon selective epitaxy called Confined Lateral Selective Epitaxial Growth (CLSEG). CLSEG is a method for forming thin films of single crystal silicon on top of an insulating layer or film. Such thin films are generically termed Silicon-On- Insulator (SOI), and1 allow dielectric isolation of integrated circuit elements, making them more efficient (faster with lower power), more resistant to radiation, and smaller than conventional integrated circuits, ionizing radiation than conventional integrated circuits. CLSEG offers advantages over current methods of achieving SOI by being easily manufactured, inherently reproducible, and having greater …

A Simple Vector Language And Its Portable Implementation, Anar Jhaveri, Hank Dietz May 1990

A Simple Vector Language And Its Portable Implementation, Anar Jhaveri, Hank Dietz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Many explicitly parallel languages have been proposed and implemented, but most such languages are complex and are targeted to specific parallel machines. The goal of this project was to design a very simple, explicitly parallel, programming language which could easily be implemented and ported to a wide variety of machines. The result was AJL, a structured language with deterministic vector-oriented parallelism. AJL programs are first compiled into assembly language instructions for an idealized parallel machine, then these assembly language instructions are macro expanded into C code which implements them for the actual target machine. Finally, the target machine’s “ native” …

Invariant Reconstruction Of Curves And Surfaces With Discontinuities With Applications In Computer Vision, Robert L. Stevenson, Edward J. Delp May 1990

Invariant Reconstruction Of Curves And Surfaces With Discontinuities With Applications In Computer Vision, Robert L. Stevenson, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The reconstruction of curves and surfaces from sparse data is an important task in many applications. In computer vision problems the reconstructed curves and surfaces generally represent some physical property of a real object in a scene. For instance, the sparse data that is collected may represent locations along the boundary between an object and a background. It may be desirable to reconstruct the complete boundary from this sparse data. Since the curves and surfaces represent physical properties, the characteristics of the reconstruction process differs from straight forward fitting of smooth curves and surfaces to a set of data in …

Optimal Code Scheduling For Multiple Pipeline Processors, Ashar Nisar, Hank Dietz May 1990

Optimal Code Scheduling For Multiple Pipeline Processors, Ashar Nisar, Hank Dietz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Pipelining the functional units and memory interface of processors can result in shorter cycle times and dramatic increases in performance, but only if the pipeline delays can be hidden by other useful operations. The portion of pipeline delays which is not hidden results in an extension of the total execution time, either implemented by hardware interlocks or by compile-time insertion of NOPs (Null Operations). By rearranging instructions, it is possible to minimize the total pipelined execution time, but the problem of finding this optimal code schedule is well known to be NP-complete. In this thesis, we describe a code scheduler …

Importance Sampling Simulation Of The Stack Algorithm With Application To Sequential Decoding, Khaled Ben Letaief May 1990

Importance Sampling Simulation Of The Stack Algorithm With Application To Sequential Decoding, Khaled Ben Letaief

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Importance sampling is a Monte Carlo variance reduction technique which in many applications has resulted in a significant reduction in computational cost required to obtain accurate Monte Carlo estimates. The basic idea is to generate the random inputs using a biased simulation distribution. That is, one that differs from the true underlying probability model. Simulation data is then weighted by an appropriate likelihood ratio in order to obtain an unbiased estimate of the desired parameter. This thesis presents new importance sampling techniques for the simulation of systems that employ the stack algorithm. The stack algorithm is primarily used in digital …

Directory Based Cache Coherency Protocols For Shared Memory Multiprocessors, Craig Warner May 1990

Directory Based Cache Coherency Protocols For Shared Memory Multiprocessors, Craig Warner

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Directory based cache coherency protocols can be used to build large scale, weakly ordered, shared memory multiprocessors. The salient feature of these protocols is that they are interconnection network independent, making them more scaleable than snoopy bus protocols. The major criticisms of previously defined directory protocols point to the size of memory heeded to store the directory and the amount of communication across the interconnection network required to maintain coherence. This thesis tries solving these problems by changing the entry format of the global table, altering the architecture of the global table, and developing new protocols. Some alternative directory entry …

Data Layout Optimization And Code Transformation For Paged Memory Systems, Lung-Yu Chang, Henry G. Dietz Apr 1990

Data Layout Optimization And Code Transformation For Paged Memory Systems, Lung-Yu Chang, Henry G. Dietz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Supercomputers need not only to have fast functional units, but also to have rapid access to massive quantities of data. Virtual memory paging and physically distributed memory systems both attempt to provide this large data space, but performance of a computer system using either memory organization is highly dependent on the page reference pattern and the number of pages available locally. Despite this, surprisingly little work has been done toward using the compiler to optimize memory system performance. In this paper, we introduce compiler techniques which use a combination of data layout and code transformation to improve paging performance for …
