Experimental Design Of A Low Noise Centrifugal Fan, J Stuart Bolton, Peter Konieczny Sep 1992

Experimental Design Of A Low Noise Centrifugal Fan, J Stuart Bolton, Peter Konieczny

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

The effect of various design parameters on broadband noise generation by centrifugal fans has been studied. The parameters varied included: blade type, radial and axial inlet clearance, scroll development angle, scroll development length and cutoff clearance. Scaling laws for pressure, flow and noise were applied to allow the A-weighted sound power levels of different fans to be compared at the same operating points. That approach has allowed an optimum low noise fan design to be identified. To extend the usefulness of that design, a semi-empirical procedure for predicting the broadband sound power spectrum of any member of a family of …

Implementation Of Back-Propagation Neural Networks With Matlab, Jamshid Nazari, Okan K. Ersoy Sep 1992

Implementation Of Back-Propagation Neural Networks With Matlab, Jamshid Nazari, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The artificial neural network back propagation algorithm is implemented in Matlab language. This implementation is compared with several other software packages. The effect of reducing the number of iterations in the performance of the algorithm iai studied. The speed of the back propagation program, mkckpmp, written in Matlab language is compared with the speed of several other back propagation programs which are written in the C language. The speed of the Matlab program mbackpmp is, also compared with the C program quickpmp which is a variant of the back propagation algorithm. It is shown that the Matlab program mbackpmp is …

Comparative Study Of Motion Control Methods For A Nonlinear System, Daniel J. Pack,, Min Meng, A. C. Kak Sep 1992

Comparative Study Of Motion Control Methods For A Nonlinear System, Daniel J. Pack,, Min Meng, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

What led to the novel ideas, some of them theoretical, presented in this paper is our highly experimental approach to nonlinear control. We actually designed and fabricated a two-link inverted pendulum, and learned about the relationships and the trade offs that exist in such a device. In the context of controlling an inverted pendulum, the novel ideas presented in this paper relate to i) the design of a fuzzy logic controller; ii) the design of a neuralnetwork controller; and iii) experimental implementation of a nonlinear controller based on differential-geometric notions; etc. etc. These novel ideas are presented in a comparative …

Design Methodology For Low Speed Variable Reluctance Motors, John R. Suriano Sep 1992

Design Methodology For Low Speed Variable Reluctance Motors, John R. Suriano

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Lowering the gear reduction in actuators by utilizing high-torque low-speed motors enables the use of less expensive and simpler gear systems and decreases the overall system inertia. Variable reluctance machines can produce high torque at low speeds. Their static torque, a critical quantity for determination of low speed operation, is colnpared for three variable reluctance motor design variations using linear analysis. Saturation effects, which are crucial to the accurate determination of static torque, are modeled using a dual energy technique first proposed by Lord Rayleigh. Dual energy techniques utilizing flux tubes and magnetomotive force slices are developed into a numerical …

A Neural Network Architecture For Prediction, W. Hsu, L. S. Hsu, M. F. Tenorio Sep 1992

A Neural Network Architecture For Prediction, W. Hsu, L. S. Hsu, M. F. Tenorio

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report describes a neural network architecture ClusNet designed for the prediction of chaotic time series. It advantages include simplicity, fast and sure convergence, and less need for computing resources. After describing its architecture and learning algorithms, its prediction perfo1:mance on the Logistic and the Mackay-Class chaotic time series is presented. Compared to other current prediction approaches, ClusNet predicts with the same level of accuracy while utilizing less resources.

Vlsi Implementation Of Discrete Cosine Transform Based On The Shared-Multiplier Algorithm, Sze-Po Hung, Wen-Zen Shen, O. K. Ersoy Sep 1992

Vlsi Implementation Of Discrete Cosine Transform Based On The Shared-Multiplier Algorithm, Sze-Po Hung, Wen-Zen Shen, O. K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper a new algorithm for discrete cosine transform (DCT) is proposed. This algorithm is especially efficient for VLSI implementation because each multiplier in @e 1-D DCT is shared by two constants rather than one. This greatly reduces the chip area, and the high speed characteristics are still retained. Based on this algorithm, we have developed the corresponding bit-parallel, fully-pipelined architecture for the size-8 DCT. The core area of the chip is only 8.6mm x 8.5mm, using 1.2um double-metal single-poly CMOS technology. This chip is simulated for operation at the maximum speed of 100 MHz which far exceeds the …
