A Neural Network Approach To Stationary Target Discrimination, Douglas J. Munro, Okan K. Ersoy
A Neural Network Approach To Stationary Target Discrimination, Douglas J. Munro, Okan K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The problem which motivated this research was that of stationary target identification (STI) with millimeter wave seekers in a heavy clutter environment. While investigating the use of neural networks to perform target discrimination phase for ST1 problem, we began to search for a method to reduce the computational overhead associated with training a neural network to recognize low probability events. Our search yielded the development of a likelihood ratio weighting function (LRWF), which is very similar to the weighting function used in importance sampling techniques employed in the simulation of digital communication systems. By incorporating the LRWF into the backpropagation …

Adaptive Control Of Redundant Multiple Robots In Cooperative Motion, Mohamed Zribi, Shaheen Ahmad, Shengwu Luo
Adaptive Control Of Redundant Multiple Robots In Cooperative Motion, Mohamed Zribi, Shaheen Ahmad, Shengwu Luo
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A redundant robot has more degrees of freedom than what is needed to uniquely position the robot end-effector. In practical applications the extra degrees of fieedom increase the orientation and reach of the robot. The load carrying capacity of a single robot can be increased by cooperative manipulation of the load by two or more robots. In this paper we develop an adaptive control scheme for kinematically redundant multiple robots in cooperative motion. In a usual robotic task, only the end-effector position trajectory is specified The joint position trajectory will therefore be unknown, for a redundant multirobot system and it …

Computing Multiple Quadratic Forms For A Minimum Variance Distortionless Response Adaptive Beamformer Using Parallelism: Analyses And Experiments, Mu-Cheng Wang, Wayne G. Nation, James B. Armstrong, Howard Jay Siegel, Shin-Dug Kim, Mark A. Nichols, Michael Gherrity
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Data-parallel implementations of the computationally intensive task of solving multiple quadratic forms (MQFs) have been examined. Coupled and uncoupled parallel methods are investigated, where coupling relates to the degree of interaction among the processors. Also, the impact of partitioning a large MQF problem into smaller non-interacting subtasks is studied. Trade-offs among the implementations for various data-size/machine-size ratios are categorized in terms of complex arithmetic operation counts, communication overhead, and memory storage requirements. Furthermore, the impact on performance of the mode of parallelism used is considered, specifically, SIMD versus MIMD versus SIMD/MIMD mixed-mode. From the complexity analyses, it is shown that …

Laboratory Study On Properties Of Rubber-Soils, Imtiaz Ahmed
Laboratory Study On Properties Of Rubber-Soils, Imtiaz Ahmed
JTRP Technical Reports
The waste tire problem in the United States is of great magnitude and has far reaching environmental and economic implications. This study investigates the feasibility of using tire chips, alone and mixed with soils, as lightweight material in highway embankments . The report contains: synthesis of all available information and results from laboratory testing of tire chips, rubber-Ottawa sand, and rubber-Crosby till. It is found that rubber-sand with chip/mix ratios of 33% or less exhibits excellent engineering properties: easy to compact; low dry density; low compressibility; high strength; and excellent drainage characteristics. On the whole, the rubber-Crosby till mixes do …

Airline Quality Rating 1993, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley
Airline Quality Rating Report
The Airline Quality Rating was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline performance on combined multiple factors important to consumers. Development history and calculation details for AQR rating system are detailed in The Airline Quality Rating (NIAR Report 91-11) issued in April, 1991, by the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. A full reporting of the 12 month period of 1991 Airline Quality Rating scores is available in Airline Quality Report 1992 (NIAR Report 92-11) also available by contacting Wichita State University.

Cancellation Of Radiated Sound Fields By The Use Of Multipole Secondary Sources, Thierry A. Beauvilain, J Stuart Bolton
Cancellation Of Radiated Sound Fields By The Use Of Multipole Secondary Sources, Thierry A. Beauvilain, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
In this paper the cancellation of sound fields in the region exterior to a primary source by the use of a single, higher order, secondary source is discussed. The nature of the secondary source or sources required to achieve that cancellation, either globally or in particular regions, is a subject of current interest. It has recently been suggested that the sound radiation from coherent, finite size radiators may be represented as a superposition of monopole sound fields or alternatively as the sound field radiated by a single multipole. It has also been observed that the sound field radiated by a …

The improvements of molecular beam epitaxy have reached a state where the deposition of material layers on an atomic length scale is possible. State-of-the-art x-ray and electron beam lithography allows horizontal patterning on a nanometer scale. These technologies have given rise to a new class of devices that operate on quantum mechanical principles. QUEST (Quantum Electron Semiconductor Transport) simulates electron quantum transport at high bias through semiconductor heterostructures. Large cross-section and one-dimensional quantum devices can be analyzed including effects due to dissipation and charging. The simulation is limited to steady-state transport in a single conduction band. The analysis is based …

A Fuzzy Precompensator Design For Pd Control Of Systems With Deadzones, Jong-Hwan Kim, Jong-Hwan Park, Seon-Woo Lee, Edwin K. P. Chong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Simple conventional control methods, such as PD and PID controllers, are widely used in industrial applications. Such controllers exhibit poor performance when applied to systems containing nonlinearities arising from unknown deadzones. In this report, we propose a novel fuzzy logic-based precompensation approach for controlling systems with deadzones. The control structure consists of a fuzzy logic-based precompensator followed by a conventional PD controller. Our proposed control scheme shows superior transient and steady-state performance compared to conventional PD and PID controllers. In addition, the scheme is robust to variations in deadzone nonlinearities, as well as the steady-state gain of the plant. We …

On A Quantitative Model Of Dynamic System Reconfiguration Due To A Fault, Gene Saghi, Howard Jay Siegel, Jose A. B. Fortes
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The use of dynamic reconfiguration has been proposed to tolerate faults in large-scale partitionable parallel processing systems. If a processor develops a permanent fault during the execution of a task on a submachine A, three recovery options are migration of the task to another submachine, task migration to a subdivision of A, and redistribution of the task among the fault-free processors in A. Quantitative models of these reconfiguration schemes are developed to consider what information is needed to make a choice among these methods for a practical implementation. It is pointed out that in certain situations collecting precise values for …

“Smart” Foams For Active Absorption Of Sound (Written Version), J Stuart Bolton, Edward R. Green

A porous layer can absorb a significant amount of acoustic energy only if its thickness is comparable to the wavelength of the incident sound. Thus a porous layer inevitably becomes a less effective sound absorber as the frequency is decreased. In this paper, it will be shown through theoretical calculations that the low frequency performance of a finite-depth layer of elastic porous material may be enhanced by applying an appropriate force to the solid phase at the front surface of the layer. In particular, it will be shown that at any angle of incidence the solid phase may be forced …
