Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Since early 2020, life for students has changed tremendously. It has been a time of stress, turmoil, and trauma for students. Researchers from a large Midwestern university wanted to determine how student information use has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper examines the results of a mixed-methods study undertaken in 2021 using surveys and follow-up focus groups to determine if and how student information use has changed. To answer this, we explored student use of news sources, social media sources, political affiliations, and information responses, coupled with to what extent these factors demonstrate or impact potential changes in information …

Exploring Narratives Of Researcher Development For Student Researchers Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, Teirra Holloman, Jessica Deters, David B. Knight
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
Background: Research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students have the potential to provide significant learning experiences, but most research of these experiences focuses primarily on their outcomes. To better design such experiences for a diverse range of students, it is important to understand student narratives of researcher development and identify significant experiences in their development as researchers.
Purpose: In this study, we explored narratives of researcher development for seven US civil engineering students in an eight-week research experience in Australia. Through these narratives, we sought to identify categories of significant experiences to characterize the early stage of the researcher development …
Data On Data: An Analysis Of Data Usage And Analytics In The Agricultural Supply Chain, Lourival Carmo Monaco Neto, Brady Brewer, Allan Gray
Data On Data: An Analysis Of Data Usage And Analytics In The Agricultural Supply Chain, Lourival Carmo Monaco Neto, Brady Brewer, Allan Gray
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
The amount of data being collected throughout the agricultural supply chain has increased in both volume and velocity. All signs indicate that this will only increase as data collection technologies become more cost effective and prevalent throughout the supply chain. Previous work in this area has focused on data collection at the farm level. Our study focuses on data that originates at five different stages of the agricultural supply chain off the farm and how these stages view their firm's data collection and analysis efforts. We find that there is heterogeneity in the data collection efforts and analysis across the …
Remembering Complicity And Resistance: A Review Of Mihaela Mihai’S Political Memory And The Aesthetics Of Care: The Art Of Complicity And Resistance (2022), Sofía Forchieri
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article offers a review of Mihaela Mihai’s book Political Memory and the Aesthetics of Care: The Art of Complicity and Resistance (2022). In it, Mihai courageously brings together insights from critical theory, political and legal science, philosophy, literary studies, and feminist theory to argue for the need of rearticulating how we remember complicity and resistance in the aftermath of political violence. Mihai develops her argument in three steps. First, she provides an account of how complicity and resistance are misremembered after systemic violence. Second, she tracks the political, epistemic and ethical consequences that this faulty work of memory-making holds …
A Semiotic Paradox: Scientific Language In The Narrative Of Tv Advertisement-, Maria Jesus De Prada Vicente
A Semiotic Paradox: Scientific Language In The Narrative Of Tv Advertisement-, Maria Jesus De Prada Vicente
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The narrative we find in TV advertisement especially abounds in scientific terms that the viewers hardly understand. The apparently ‘scientific’ language induces them to believe in the modern myth of science as absolute truth, which inevitably produces alienation from reality. The more such language triumphs, the more alienation they suffer without knowing it. Such is our situation today that reminds us of the time of Nazi in which alienating language was dominant. However, whether the use of scientific language on TV advertisement becomes alienating or not depends on the socio-cultural context of the viewers. For example, in Japan where the …
Terada Torahiko, A Physicist And A Haikai Poet, Akira Komiya
Terada Torahiko, A Physicist And A Haikai Poet, Akira Komiya
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Terada Torahiko is known as a scientific essayist in Japan, but hardly anyone knows he was a haikai poet as well as a physicist. According to him, haikai poetry and physics are two different ways of conceiving Nature, both valid and perhaps complementary to each other. Seeing his research in physics looking for regularities in apparently irregular phenomena in everyday life, we may say his haiku haikai spirit is manifest there and that he was pioneering a new science such as the one developed later by Ilya Prigogine. His association of haiku haikai poetry and Freudian interpretations of dreams leads …
Bergson On Poetics: Philosophy, Literature And Science, Michel Dalissier
Bergson On Poetics: Philosophy, Literature And Science, Michel Dalissier
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In this paper, I analyze Henri Bergson’s insightful and contrasted vision of poetry. First, I show in what sense Bergson sympathizes with the idea that the poet must be credited to surpass the novelist in offering to us an unparalleled emotional apprehension of the world. Second, I nonetheless underline how Bergson grants the product of the poet, i.e., the poem itself, a problematic linguistic status, inasmuch as the focus of his analysis shifts from an intersubjective poetical apprehension of feelings to their individual poetic appreciation, or from the spiritual dimension of poetry to its material dimension. Third, I further suggest …

Language, Science And Literature, Hitoshi Oshima
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The creativity of language Chomsky puts so much importance on must be questioned because the same creativity has produced lethal weapons such as atomic bombs. Modern science developed by the power of language has certainly produced many beneficial things, but we should not overlook its destructive side. Besides, language capable of inventing a new reality leads us to believe in it blindly. Let us remember philosophers such as Wittgenstein or Nagarjuna who warned us not to believe in the construct called “reality” made up by language power. Now, is it better and safer then to use a metaphorical language that composes …
Coming Of Age And Exile In No Pasó Nada, Regina Maria Faunes
Coming Of Age And Exile In No Pasó Nada, Regina Maria Faunes
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The article examines the effect of exile on the coming-of-age process in Skármeta’s novel, No pasó nada. Through textual analysis and the application of theories surrounding identity formation, socialization, and the accommodation of the individual into society, the paper demonstrates how exile both complicates and acts as a catalyst in the protagonist’s coming of age. Despite the fact that the novel was published in the second half of the twentieth century, the protagonist follows the classical coming-of-age process depicted in nineteenth-century texts, prior to changes brought about by late capitalism, globalization and the explosion of digital media platforms that …
Orature: The Political Interpretation Of Performance Framework In Anthills Of The Savannah And Half Of A Yellow Sun, Jing Duan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The focus of discussion in this paper lies in a perception that orature of African written literature is not innocent but a form of control. Operated through its performance framework, the concept of orature provides an angle to observe how African oral tradition penetrates written literature and cultivates an awareness of the political nature both of the material to be written and of the writing process itself. This paper explores the performance framework in two African novels — Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah and Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun. Through such key concepts as event, narrative and self-reflexivity …
Political Orientation In Ecocriticism: National Allegory In Vietnamese Ecofiction By Trần Duy Phiên, Chi P. Pham
Political Orientation In Ecocriticism: National Allegory In Vietnamese Ecofiction By Trần Duy Phiên, Chi P. Pham
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Since the late 1990s, theories and practices of ecocriticism have tended to be more politically engaged than in its earliest phase, considering that “environmental problems cannot be solved without addressing issues of wealth and poverty, overconsumption, underdevelopment, and the notion of resource scarcity” (Heise 251-2). This paper engages with the political orientation in ecocriticism by examining presentations of humans and nature in three Vietnamese short stories – “Kiến và người” (The Ants and the Man, 1990), “Mối và người” (The Termite and the Man, 1992), and “Nhện và người” (The Spider and the Man, 2012) by Trần Duy Phiên (born …
Simplified Demonstration Of A New Perivascular Pump Mechanism For Glymphatic Flow Of Interstitial Fluid In The Brain, Charles F. Babbs
Simplified Demonstration Of A New Perivascular Pump Mechanism For Glymphatic Flow Of Interstitial Fluid In The Brain, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
In a previous paper the author presented details of a new mechanism for the perivascular pump driving glymphatic flow—the brain’s waste removal system. The goal was to capture the essence of complex three-dimensional anatomy and physiology of the brain in a reduced order geometric model. The complexity required to make the model even approximately brain-like tended to obscure the most basic features of the perivascular pump. Here a bare-bones, “simplissimo” model of the perivascular pump is presented. It highlights only the most essential features of the pump mechanism. It also reveals components of brain anatomy and physiology that are not …

A Robust Stepwise Clustering Approach To Detect Individual Trees In Temperate Hardwood Plantations Using Airborne Lidar Data, Gang Shao, Songlin Fei, Guofan Shao
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Precise tree inventory plays a critical role in sustainable forest planting, restoration, and management. LiDAR-based individual tree detection algorithms often focus on finding individual treetops to discern tree positions. However, deliquescent tree forms (broad, flattened crowns) in deciduous forests can make these algorithms ineffective. In this study, we propose a stepwise tree detection approach, by first identifying individual trees using horizontal point density and then analyzing their vertical structure profiles. We first project LiDAR data onto a 2D horizontal plane and apply mean shift clustering to generate candidate tree clusters. Next, we apply a series of structure analyses on the …

For a continuous healthcare or environmental monitoring system, it is essential to reliably sense the analyte concentration reported by electrochemical sensors. However, environmental perturbation, sensor drift, and power-constraint make reliable sensing with wearable and implantable sensors difficult. While most studies focus on improving sensor stability and precision by increasing the system’s complexity and cost, we aim to address this challenge using low-cost sensors. To obtain the desired accuracy from low-cost sensors, we borrow two fundamental concepts from communication theory and computer science. First, inspired by reliable data transmission over a noisy communication channel by incorporating redundancy, we propose to measure …

This study investigated the teaching experiences of three school personnel at a public high school during the 2020–2021 school year as they implemented a unique science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) unit with in-person and virtual students in their engineering classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. A research team interviewed two teachers and one administrator at the school to better understand the nuances of pre-college engineering during a pandemic year and how changes in school and district policy affected the instructional delivery of STEAM projects. Narrative analytic methods were utilized to understand each participant’s experience and an inductive content thematic …
Flight Testing Gls Approaches Enabled By Wide Area Corrections In Kerkyra, Greece, Thomas Dautermann, Thomas Ludwig
Flight Testing Gls Approaches Enabled By Wide Area Corrections In Kerkyra, Greece, Thomas Dautermann, Thomas Ludwig
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Many airports with a high value to commercial air traffic have spatial or budgetary constraints which prevent the installation of a precision approach system. We previously designed a low-cost precision approach system which combines the advantages of both ground-based and satellite-based augmentation systems by using a converter between them in order to allow GAST-A approach types. We installed, operated, and flight-tested such a system at Kerkyra Airport using an A320 aircraft. During these, we recorded data from a commercial multimode receiver as well as GPS raw data in order to prove the feasibility of the system. Data were analyzed using …
