Neural Network Based Adaptive Fractional-Order Backstepping Control Of Uncertain Quadrotors With Unknown Input Delays, Yi Yang, Haiyan Z. Zhang Mar 2023

Neural Network Based Adaptive Fractional-Order Backstepping Control Of Uncertain Quadrotors With Unknown Input Delays, Yi Yang, Haiyan Z. Zhang

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Adaptive control is essential and effective for reliable quadrotor operations in the presence of uncertain modeling parameters and unknown time-delayed inputs. This paper presents an original radial basis function neural network-based adaptive fractional-order backstepping controller (RBF-ADFOBC). The nonlinearity of the time-delayed inputs is eliminated by introducing an augmented state variable via Pade’s approximation method. For each subsystem in the quadrotor dynamics, a companioned second-order compensation system is developed. The candidate Lyapunov functions are then properly designed by incorporating the control errors, parameter uncertainties and estimation errors of the neural networks’ weight vectors. It is shown that the semi-globally uniformly ultimately …

The Simon Effect Asymmetry For Left- And Right-Dominant Persons, Robert W. Proctor, Qi Zhong, Jing Chen Mar 2023

The Simon Effect Asymmetry For Left- And Right-Dominant Persons, Robert W. Proctor, Qi Zhong, Jing Chen

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

When participants respond to a task-relevant stimulus attribute by pressing a left or right key with the respective index finger, reaction time is shorter if task-irrelevant left-right stimulus location corresponds to that of the response key than if it does not. For right-handers, this Simon effect is larger for right-located than left-located stimuli; for left-handers this Simon-effect asymmetry is reversed. A similar asymmetry has been found for right-footers pressing pedals with their feet. For analyses that separate stimulus- and response-location factors, these asymmetries appear as a main effect of response location, with responses being faster with the dominant effector. If …

Fish Farming Wastewater Treatment Using Algae-Cyanobacterial Inocula, Yolanys Aranda Mar 2023

Fish Farming Wastewater Treatment Using Algae-Cyanobacterial Inocula, Yolanys Aranda

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

Fish is one of the most important nutrient sources of the human diet, and its low-cost aquaculture production is advantageous. During processing, large quantities of organic and inorganic nutrients are produced. Discharging fish farming wastewater to the environment without proper treatment can support harmful algal growth. Therefore, aquaculture effluent must be treated prior to discharge to the receiving waters. In this study, six different cyanobacteria and algae species, including Chlorococcumminutum, Porphyridiumcruentum, Chlorella vulgaris, Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Fischerellamuscicola were studiedto treatfish aquaculture wastewater, using mix-culture bacteria as the inoccolum. All samples were incubated for 21 days. Parameters such as …

Nucleic Acid Detection Of Live Pathogens On Contaminated Foods, Simerdeep Kaur, Mohit Verma Mar 2023

Nucleic Acid Detection Of Live Pathogens On Contaminated Foods, Simerdeep Kaur, Mohit Verma

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

The goal is to develop a point-of-care biosensor for the detection of live pathogens contaminating beef products. Biosensing of live pathogens is based on isothermal amplification of nucleic acid on a paper-based device. A colorimetric dye is employed as an indicator of the amplification product for visual result. The assay incorporates a compound Propidium monoazide (PMA) that makes the DNA from dead cells inaccessible for amplification. This approach is especially applicable for pathogens that can enter a viable but non-culturable state (VBNC).

Fuzzy Dynamic Gait Pattern Generation For Real-Time Push Recovery Control Of A Teen-Sized Humanoid Robot, Li-Fan Wu Mar 2023

Fuzzy Dynamic Gait Pattern Generation For Real-Time Push Recovery Control Of A Teen-Sized Humanoid Robot, Li-Fan Wu

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

A fuzzy dynamic gait pattern generator, which allows a teen-sized humanoid robot to generate, in real-time, a suitable gait pattern when it is hit by an unexpected force, is proposed in this paper. Conventional gait pattern generators usually utilize the ideal Zero Moment Point (ZMP) to plan the trajectory of the Center of Mass (CoM), along with a cycloid to generate steps. However, pre-planned gait patterns cannot deal with unexpected situations, especially instances when the robot experiences an unknown force. Therefore, we propose a dynamic gait pattern generator that leverages the Virtual Force Linear Inverted Pendulum Model (VFLIPM) to adjust …

Identifying Non-Traditional Slippery Sequences Associated With Translational Frameshifts, Aaron J. Gin, Kari Lynn Clase Mar 2023

Identifying Non-Traditional Slippery Sequences Associated With Translational Frameshifts, Aaron J. Gin, Kari Lynn Clase

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

Genetic frameshifts are a mutation in which
a nucleotide skip leads to a shift in the
reading frame. In viruses, these frameshifts
can be programmed using a slippery
sequence to bypass the stop codon
associated with the initial protein. This
allows for variable control of protein
expression. In bacteriophages, translational
frameshifts have been identified but only a
few have been proven experimentally. Using
experimental data and comparative
genomics, non-traditional slippery
sequences can be identified as assisting in
controlling the protein coding throughout
viruses. Novel slippery sequences can aid in
the understanding of protein expression in
biological environments and further the …

Graduate Industrial Research Symposium

Darker-colored wood species usually have higher
values, many of which are endangered and under
protection. Chemical stains and finishes might also
achieve similar color shades, but customers prefer
non-chemical alternatives. Thermal treatment (TT)
is one of the low-toxicity choices. It could produce
darker shades and enhance some material
properties but requires a large initial investment
and is time-consuming. This study aimed to
evaluate a new type of TT: Surface Thermal
Treatment (STT). White Ash, Yellow Poplar, and Red
Oak were selected and treated on a heated press
at varying temperatures and times. Artificial Neural
Network (ANN) was employed to model …

Recognition Of Design Failure By Fourth-Grade Students During An Engineering Design Challenge, Ron K. Skinner, Danielle B. Harlow Mar 2023

Recognition Of Design Failure By Fourth-Grade Students During An Engineering Design Challenge, Ron K. Skinner, Danielle B. Harlow

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The practice of persisting and learning from design failures is essential to engineering design and offers unique ways of knowing and learning for K-12 students. To understand how students engage in the practice of persisting and learning from design failures, we must first understand how, if at all, they recognize that a design failure has occurred. We studied a classroom of fourth-grade students engaged in an engineering design challenge and examined the ways in which design failure occurred and how students recognized, neglected to recognize, or misinterpreted design failure. We found that, in addition to anticipating failure, conducting fair tests, …

Memory Retrieval, Reconsolidation, And Extinction: Exploring The Boundary Conditions Of Post-Conditioning Cue Exposure, Nicole C. Ferrara, Janine L. Kwapis, Sydney Trask Mar 2023

Memory Retrieval, Reconsolidation, And Extinction: Exploring The Boundary Conditions Of Post-Conditioning Cue Exposure, Nicole C. Ferrara, Janine L. Kwapis, Sydney Trask

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Following fear conditioning, behavior can be reduced by giving many CS-alone presentations in a process known as extinction or by presenting a few CS-alone presentations and interfering with subsequent memory reconsolidation. While the two share procedural similarities, both the behavioral outcomes and the neurobiological underpinnings are distinct. Here we review the neural and behavioral mechanisms that produce these separate behavioral reductions, as well as some factors that determine whether or not a retrieval-dependent reconsolidation process or an extinction process will be in effect.
