International Human Resource Strategy And Its Determinants: The Case Of Multinationals And Their Subsidiaries In Taiwan, John M. Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Bih-Shiaw Jaw Jan 1994

International Human Resource Strategy And Its Determinants: The Case Of Multinationals And Their Subsidiaries In Taiwan, John M. Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Bih-Shiaw Jaw

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This introductory investigation into the human resource implications associated with the tensions between integration and responsiveness studied the concept of International Human REsource (IHR) Strategy; its dimensions and its determinants. To accomplish this, Jarillo and Martinez's (1990) parent--subsidiary business strategy framework was recast in an IHR strategy setting. Then, the relationships between a set of interorganizational interdependency determinants and the dimensions of IHR strategy that emerged, global integration and local responsiveness, were empirically tested. Sata from 100 subsidiaries and their parents highlighted several informative associations between interorganizational dependencies (dependence on parent's resources, dependence on local resources, dependence on host institutions) …

Key Information Systems Management Issues In Developing Countries: Differences In The Indiana And Us Contexts, Alok R. Chaturvedi, Hemant K. Jain, Derek L. Nazareth

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper uses the Minnesota insturment to do a comparative study of the key information systems issued in the Indian and US contexts. The results indicate that seventeen of the top 25 and six of the top ten issues coincide. The top ten issues to conincide are: Data Resource, Strategic Planning, Aligning IS Orgnaization, Competitive Advantage, Quality of Software Development, and Telecommunications Systems. The issues making the top ten list in the US context but not so in the Indian context are: Information Architecture, IS Human Resources, and Organizational Learning. Technology Infrasturcture did not appear on the questionnaire administered in …

Leaning Against The Wind: Do Central Banks Necessarily Lose?, John A. Carlson, Insook Kim Jan 1994

Leaning Against The Wind: Do Central Banks Necessarily Lose?, John A. Carlson, Insook Kim

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

A leaning-against-the wind intervention that has only a temporary effect on the exchange rate and that is not too aggressive can be shown analytically to yield positive expected profits to a central bank even when the exchange-rate process is non-stationary. These profits arise if there are some transitory shocks to the exchange rate. Furthermore, very aggressive intervention will yeild positive expected profits eventually when there is a tendency for exchange rates to return to a long-run equilibrium level.

Patent Races, Product Standards, And International Competition, Richard Jensen, Marie Thursby Jan 1994

Patent Races, Product Standards, And International Competition, Richard Jensen, Marie Thursby

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We examine anticipatory product standards intended to improve the strategic position of firms in an international patent race where firms do R & D to develop products that are close substitutes. The effects of a standard are shown to depend on the way the standard is specified, which firm develops which product, and on the order in which products are discovered. Simple standards are, in general, time inconsistent because of consumer losses that occur when products ruled out by the standard are discovered before the product set as the standard. A state-contingent standard is shown to be time consistent when …

Firm Strategy And Economic Exposure To Foreign Exchange Rate Movements, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer Jan 1994

Firm Strategy And Economic Exposure To Foreign Exchange Rate Movements, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study examines the implications of differences in strategy and industry structure for firms' economic exposures to foreign exchange rate movements. Analysis of exchange rate data indicates previous empirical research using a single exchange rate proxy understates economic exposures. This study estimated firms' exposures using a multivariate model. The empirical evidence from U.S. manufacturing firms indicates that foreign direct investment reduces economic exposure to foreign exchange rate movements.

Panglobal Distribution Of A Single Clonal Lineage Of The Irish Potato Famine Fungus, Stephen B. Goodwin, Barak A. Cohen, William E. Fry Jan 1994

Panglobal Distribution Of A Single Clonal Lineage Of The Irish Potato Famine Fungus, Stephen B. Goodwin, Barak A. Cohen, William E. Fry

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

More than 300 isolates of the Irish potato famine fungus, Phytopkthora iufesns, colc In 20 countries on five ontits, were analyzed for genetic variation at the mating type and two allozyme loci. A subset of more than 200 islates was also analyzed for DNA "fingerpint" variation. A surprisng result was that a single conal ineage dominated most populaton worldwide. AD of the variation within this loneage appeared to have arisen by mitotic embinat or by mutation. In addItion to the most common cal lineage, a number of diferent, but a rtiy closely related, lineages occurred in the United States and …
