Estimating Statewide Vehicle Miles Traveled In Indiana : Draft Final Report, Robert Kwasi Kumapley, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Two cross classification models have been developed in this study for use in the estimation of statewide VMT in Indiana. This is to provide INDOT with an independent source of improved statewide VMT estimates based on driver behavior to supplement the estimates obtained from the traffic count based HPMS method. The models are calibrated to produce VMT estimates for all functional classes in the state network, including combined statewide VMT estimates for functional classes that are not part of the state highway system. The results obtained in the model evaluation process indicate that the models are well calibrated. Model-generated VMT …

Guidelines For Permitting Overloads; Part 1: Effect Of Overloaded Vehicles On The Indiana Highway Network, Sameh Mohamed Zaghloul, Thomas D. White

JTRP Technical Reports

Closed form analysis is commonly used to analyze pavement structures. This type of analysis assumes linear elastic material properties and static loading conditions. In reality, pavement materials are not linear elastic materials. For example, asphalt mixtures are viscoelastic materials and cohesive soils are elastic-plastic materials. Also truck loads are moving loads. The difference between the closed form analysis assumptions and the actual pavement conditions leads to significant differences between measured and predicted pavement response. A study has been conducted at Purdue University to develop a procedure for permitting overloaded trucks in Indiana. This study was funded by the Indiana Department …

An Experimental Investigation About The Structure Of International Commerce, Ron Ruey Duh, Shyam Sunder Jan 1994

An Experimental Investigation About The Structure Of International Commerce, Ron Ruey Duh, Shyam Sunder

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Individual behavior in isolation is known to deviate systematically from predictions of the Bayes' Rule when they are intuitively (i.e., without formal computation). Economic settings, rich in incentives, information and learning, may induce Bayesian behavior. Further, it is possible that the aggregate behavior in markets can be predicted accurately by simply assuming that individuals act as Bayesians. Data from laboratory markets suggest that, compared to specific alternative assumptions about individual information processing, Bayes' Rule is a better predictor of market price but not of allocation and efficiency. Improvement in its performance with trader experience suggests that, as a descriptive theoory …

Between Realignments And Intervention: The Belgian Franc In The European Monetary System, Kees G. Koedijk, Phillip A. Stork, Casper G. De Vries Jan 1994

Between Realignments And Intervention: The Belgian Franc In The European Monetary System, Kees G. Koedijk, Phillip A. Stork, Casper G. De Vries

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We analyse the fuctioning of the Belgian franc in the European Monetary System between 1979 and 1991. A discrete time target zone model which captures the features displayed by the continuous time models is combined with intervention data provided by the Belgian central bank. Simple prediction formulas are derived to calculate one-week-ahead conditional probabilities on a realignment of the Belgian franc relative to the Deutsche mark. The devaluation probabilities are matched with the intervention data. We find support fo rhte notion that Belgian intervention policy was a policy of leaning against the wind.

International Human Resource Strategy And Control: The Case Of Multinationals And Their Subsidiaries, John M. Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Bih-Shiaw Jaw Jan 1994

International Human Resource Strategy And Control: The Case Of Multinationals And Their Subsidiaries, John M. Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Bih-Shiaw Jaw

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study examined the relationship between International Human Resource (IHR) Strategy and International Human Resource Control. To do so, Jarillo and Martinez's (1990) framework for parent--subsidiary business strategy was recast into an IHR strategy context and Snell's (1992) conceputualization of control int he supervisor--subordinate relationship was extended to the parent--subsidiary setting. Data from 100 subsidiaries and their parents shwoed that subsidiaries adopt one of three (receptive, active, or autonomous) IHR strategies. In addition, the data demonstrate that a globally integrated IHR strategy is associated with tighter control over the subsidiary's selection, performance evaluation, and reward systems and looser control over …

On The Determinants Of Corporate Hedging With Financial Derivatives, Stephen R. Goldberg, Joseph H. Godwin, Myung-Sun Kim, Charles A. Tritschler Jan 1994

On The Determinants Of Corporate Hedging With Financial Derivatives, Stephen R. Goldberg, Joseph H. Godwin, Myung-Sun Kim, Charles A. Tritschler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We examine explanations for corporate policy choices related to the use of derivative financial instruments. Recent corporate disclosure requirements allows us to replicate and extend the work of Nance, Smith and Smithson (1993, NSS) using a larger sample. We extend previous research by considering interest rate and foreign exchange hedging separately, using continuous rather than binary measures of hedging, and including variables measuring level of multinationality and exposure to interest rate and foreign exchange rate changes. The findings document robust empirical relationships among corporate policy decisions and firm characteristics. In a tobit regression analysis, our results suggest that firms which …

The Mediating Effects Of Pre- And Post-Assignment Activities On The Quality Of Work Life Of Expatriates: Evidence For Managers In The P.R.C., John Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Cheng-Chen Lin Jan 1994

The Mediating Effects Of Pre- And Post-Assignment Activities On The Quality Of Work Life Of Expatriates: Evidence For Managers In The P.R.C., John Hannon, Ing-Chung Huang, Cheng-Chen Lin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study investigates how two managerial interventions, pre-assignment training and post-assignmnet support, mediate the relationship between a set of personal & job characteristics and a broad measure of foreign assignment success, quality of work life (QWL). To accomplish this, we studied 199 expatriates posted form the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the People's Republic of China (PRC), a host ocutnry with a similar language, race, and cultural background. Using this setting, we were better able to isolate the mediating effects of these human resource interventions on the assignee's adjustment and success. In the end, it appears that some of the …

Financial Reporting For Foreign Exchange Derivatives, Stephen R. Goldberg, Charles A. Tritschler, Joseph H. Godwin Jan 1994

Financial Reporting For Foreign Exchange Derivatives, Stephen R. Goldberg, Charles A. Tritschler, Joseph H. Godwin

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

A major objective of the FASB's financial instruments project, inclusive of SFAS 105, SFAS 107 and SFAS 119, is to provide information useful to investors in assessing the credit and market rish associated with the use of off-balance-sheet ifnancial instruments. We survey 1992 SFAS 105 and SFAS 107 disclosures on Foreign Exchange Derivatives (FXD) to: (1) benchmark current practice by summarizing quantitative and qualitative disclosures of FXD, and (2) examine the usefulness of current disclosures in assessing market and credit rish related to FXD. In achieving these objectives, we provide insight into how leading U.S. multinationals operationalize accounting standards related …

Economic Exposure And Integrated Risk Management, Kent D. Miller Jan 1994

Economic Exposure And Integrated Risk Management, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Most corporate risk management research focuses on particular risk exposures to the exclusion of other interrelated exposures. By contrast, this study models corporate risk exposures using a multivariate approach integrating the distinct exposures of interest to finance and strategy researchers. The paper addresses the implications of multivariate modeling for corporate risk management, some key methodological issues arising in empirical estimation of corporate economic exposrues, and directions for research on integrated risk management.

Diversification Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller Jan 1994

Diversification Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study develops and tests a behavioral model of diversification responses to environmental uncertainties. Regression results using an international data set provide strong support for the general proposition that uncertainties associated with different environmental components--political, government policy, macroeconomic, competitive, input, and product demand uncertainties--have different implications for firm product and international market diversification.

A Model For Filter-Rule Gains In Foreign Exchange Markets, John Carlson, Marc Surchat Jan 1994

A Model For Filter-Rule Gains In Foreign Exchange Markets, John Carlson, Marc Surchat

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

An f-percent filter rule in a foreign exchange market calls for buying a foreign currency when its price has risen by f percent above a trough and holding until its price has fallen f percent from a peak. If the foreign exchange rate following a random walk, this is an unprofitable strategy. Since ex post filter rules continue to show positive gains on average, there must be a pattern in the data that makes these gains possible. Slight first-order autocorrelation, evident in the changes in actual exchange rates, is not strong enough by itself to account for the ex post …

The Influence Of Changing Trade Patterns Of Displacements Of Labor, Jon D. Haveman Jan 1994

The Influence Of Changing Trade Patterns Of Displacements Of Labor, Jon D. Haveman

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

While there is an extensive literature detailing the change in industrial employment resulting from changes int rading patterns, there is no significant literature that translates these changes in labor demand to actual worker hardship. This study provides evidence of the labor market effects of changes in import and export competition throughout the 1980's by focusing on the level of industry displacements, workers involuntarily separated from their industry of employment, rather than changes in the level of industry employment. The results therefore shed light on the number of workers that were measureably injured by changing trade patterns. The analysis is based …

Operational Flexibility Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller Jan 1994

Operational Flexibility Responses To Environmental Uncertainties, Kent D. Miller

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study develops and tests a behavioral model of organizational changes in operational flexibility. Regression results using an international data set provide strong support for the general proposition that uncertainties associated with different environmental components--poitical, government policy, macroeconomic, competitive, input and product demand uncertainties--have different implications for firm internal, locational, and supploer flexibility. Slack acts as a buffer attenuating, and often offsetting, the direct effects of uncertainties on changes in operational flexibility.

Classification Of Multi-Spectral Data By Joint Supervised-Unsupervised Learning, Behzad Shahshahani, David Landgrebe Jan 1994

Classification Of Multi-Spectral Data By Joint Supervised-Unsupervised Learning, Behzad Shahshahani, David Landgrebe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An important problem in pattern recognition is the effect of small design sample size on classification performance. When the ratio of the number of training samples to the number of feature measurements is small, the estimates of the discrimiriant functions are not accurate and therefore the classification results might not be satisfactory. This problem is becoming more and more important in remote sensing, as the number of available spectral bands is becoming greater and greater. In order to utilize fully the information contained in the high dimensional data, training samples are needed from all of the classes of interest. A …

The Determinants Of Corporate Attractiveness, John Hannon, Yoko Sano Jan 1994

The Determinants Of Corporate Attractiveness, John Hannon, Yoko Sano

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This study examines the effects of observable organizational characteristics on job seeker attributions of corporate attractiveness in Japan. Data from 11,060 Japanese university students (3,678 seniors specializing in engineering & science and 7,382 seniors majoring in liberal arts) demonstrate that a company's number of employees, an indication of job security and career potential, is related to corporate attractiveness for both groups, as hypothesized. Contrary to what was expected, the age of the firm, a surrogate for reputation and tradition, had no effect on corporate attractivenss for either group. The effects for sales, an indication of size, and profits, an indication …
