Paj Xyeem, Mao S. Lee
Paj Xyeem, Mao S. Lee
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
Paj Xyeem reflects a time period when I was processing my educational experience. It expresses my emotions of being invisibilized—existing without being seen or heard—in U.S. academic spaces. This invisibility is the ways in which my belonging in intellectual spaces were challenged and denied. Paj Xyeem, which is translated to grade, captures moments when I was made invisible in classrooms that operated on White Supremacist ideology. In this writing, I highlight the problematic processes of classroom policies and teaching pedagogies that centered Whiteness. Additionally, this poem captures instances when I was given a majoritarian narrative (Solórzano & Yosso, 2002) to …

Toward Hmoob-Centered Inquiries: Reclaiming Hmoob American Educational Scholarship And Curriculum, Choua P. Xiong, Kaozong N. Mouavangsou
Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement
As the intersecting field of HMoob (Hmong/Mong) Studies/Hmong American Studies, Southeast Asian American Studies, and Education Studies grow, there is also an increased desire to learn, read, and produce scholarship by HMoob people. Throughout our graduate journeys and as early career scholars and educators at the intersections of Critical HMoob Studies and Education Studies, we—Choua and Kaozong—have yearned for scholarship on HMoob that is not just about representation but includes research that recognizes HMoob strengths and assets. Specifically, we craved scholarly knowledge that employed HMoob assets to interrogate racist, colonial discourses and decenter whiteness. This special issue centers HMoob (Hmong/Mong) …
A New Empirical Law For The Prediction Of The Zero-Lift Pitching Moment Coefficient Of Swept And Tapered Wings, Mondher Yahyaoui
A New Empirical Law For The Prediction Of The Zero-Lift Pitching Moment Coefficient Of Swept And Tapered Wings, Mondher Yahyaoui
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
A new empirical law for the prediction of the zero-lift pitching moment coefficient of trapezoidal wings with linear twist and constant taper and sweep in subsonic flow is introduced. This law is quite general in that it does not rely on the use of charts and spans the normal range of values of taper ratio, aspect ratio, and sweep for subsonic aircraft. It does not, however, accommodate different airfoils along the wingspan and only positive sweep has been considered. The empirical law was first derived for the incompressible regime and then an additional empirical law for the compressibility effect has …
Spin-Acoustic Control Of Silicon Vacancies In 4h Silicon Carbide, Jonathan R. Dietz, Boyang Jiang, Aaron M. Day, Sunil A. Bhave, Evelyn L. Hu
Spin-Acoustic Control Of Silicon Vacancies In 4h Silicon Carbide, Jonathan R. Dietz, Boyang Jiang, Aaron M. Day, Sunil A. Bhave, Evelyn L. Hu
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Bulk acoustic resonators can be fabricated on the same substrate as other components and can operate at various frequencies with high quality factors. Mechanical dynamic metrology of these devices is challenging as the surface information available through laser Doppler vibrometry lacks information about the acoustic energy stored in the bulk of the resonator. Here we report the spin-acoustic control of naturally occurring negatively charged silicon monovacancies in a lateral overtone bulk acoustic resonator that is based on 4H silicon carbide. We show that acoustic driving can be used at room temperature to induce coherent population oscillations. Spin-acoustic resonance is shown …

Connecting With The Outside World: Psychosocially Supportive Aspects Of Operational Communication Between Isolated Crews In Space And Mission Control On The Ground, Dennis J. Frederiksen
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Radio-based communication between crew members in space and mission control centers on the ground has the operational purpose of supporting the safe and effective execution of missions in space. Space-to-ground communication also, however, constitutes one of the relatively few interpersonal relationships astronauts have during missions and in addition to its operational purpose, this communication can support astronauts’ wellbeing. The purpose of this paper is to identify psychosocially supportive aspects of operational space-to-ground communication between astronauts in space and spacecraft communicators on the ground. Through qualitative analysis of authentic mission communication, this paper identifies two supportive aspects and develops a terminology …

Teaching And Collecting Technical Standards: A Handbook For Librarians And Educators, Chelsea Leachman, Erin M. Rowley, Margaret Phillips, Daniela Solomon
Teaching And Collecting Technical Standards: A Handbook For Librarians And Educators, Chelsea Leachman, Erin M. Rowley, Margaret Phillips, Daniela Solomon
Purdue Information Literacy Handbooks
Technical standards are a vital source of information for providing guidelines during the design, manufacture, testing, and use of whole products, materials, and components. To prepare students—especially engineering students—for the workforce, universities are increasing the use of standards within the curriculum. Employers believe it is important for recent university graduates to be familiar with standards. Despite the critical role standards play within academia and the workforce, little information is available on the development of standards information literacy, which includes the ability to understand the standardization process; identify types of standards; and locate, evaluate, and use standards effectively.

Observation Of Self-Patterned Defect Formation In Atomic Superfluids–From Ring Dark Solitons To Vortex Dipole Necklaces, Hikaru Tamura, Cheng-An Chen, Chen-Lung Hung
Observation Of Self-Patterned Defect Formation In Atomic Superfluids–From Ring Dark Solitons To Vortex Dipole Necklaces, Hikaru Tamura, Cheng-An Chen, Chen-Lung Hung
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Unveiling nonequilibrium dynamics of solitonic and topological defect structures in a multidimensional nonlinear medium is a current frontier across diverse fields. One of the quintessential objects is a ring dark soliton (RDS), whose dynamics are expected to display remarkable interplay between symmetry and self-patterned topological defect formation from a transverse (snake) instability, but it has thus far evaded full experimental observations. Here, we report an experimental realization of RDS generation in a two-dimensional atomic superfluid trapped in a circular box. By quenching the confining box potential, we observe an RDS emitted from the edge and its peculiar signature in the …

Service Dogs: A Scoping Review Of Interdisciplinary Research, K. Lynn Pierce, Nancy A. Dreschel
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Despite a long history of service dogs (SDs) being paired with human partners as a systematic intervention and increasing numbers of and roles for SDs, there remains a lack of empirical knowledge and professional guidance regarding the implementation of SDs into treatment plans for individuals with disabilities. The purpose of this scoping review was to review the peer-reviewed literature specific to SDs and their handlers, to identify successful search term strategies, and to determine in what disciplines research is being conducted. Terminology used in referring to service dogs continues to be a challenge. Through a series of preliminary searches, search …
The Impact Of Community Engagement On Undergraduate Social Responsibility Attitudes, Daniel S. Schiff, Jeonghyun Lee, Jason Borenstein, Ellen Zegura
The Impact Of Community Engagement On Undergraduate Social Responsibility Attitudes, Daniel S. Schiff, Jeonghyun Lee, Jason Borenstein, Ellen Zegura
Department of Political Science Faculty Publications
The literature on student development cautions that social responsibility attitudes may stagnate or decline as students proceed through college. Given the importance of students’ future professional obligations to society, identifying ways to reverse this trend is crucial. In turn, an important aim of this study, situated at a large public university, is to evaluate the prospects of community engagement as a strategy to foster professional social responsibility development. The study uses longitudinal results from an instrument known as the Generalized Professional Responsibility Assessment (GPRA) to assess personal and professional social responsibility attitudes. The study’s sample includes 128 students who completed …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Through a combination of ethnographic principles and a qualitative case study structure, this study strives to understand how Hispanic/ Latinx aviation students perceive the current aviation safety culture in their flight training program. Grounded in the reciprocal safety culture model, the researchers attempt to answer how does Hispanic/Latinx culture influence perceptions towards commitment to aviation safety? and what are Hispanic/Latinx students’ perceptions of their ability to influence aviation safety culture? Three major themes emerged from the data: behavioral signs of safety culture at the collegiate level, obstacles to a sound safety culture, and methods to improve the safety culture. Moreover, …
Optimization Of Extreme Ultra-Violet Light Emitted From The Co2 Laser-Irradiated Tin Plasmas Using 2d Radiation Hydrodynamic Simulations, Atsushi Sunahara, Ahmed Hassanein, Kentaro Tomita, Shinichi Namba, Takeshi Higashiguchi
Optimization Of Extreme Ultra-Violet Light Emitted From The Co2 Laser-Irradiated Tin Plasmas Using 2d Radiation Hydrodynamic Simulations, Atsushi Sunahara, Ahmed Hassanein, Kentaro Tomita, Shinichi Namba, Takeshi Higashiguchi
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
We studied Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) emission characteristics of the 13.5 nm wavelength from CO2 laser-irradiated pre-formed tin plasmas using 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations. Our results indicate that when a CO2 laser irradiates pre-formed tin plasma, the heated plasma expands towards the surrounding plasma, steepening the density at the ablation front and lowering the density near the laser axis due to the transverse motion of the plasma. Consequently, the laser absorption fraction decreases, and the contribution to EUV output from the ablation front becomes dominant over that from the low-density plasmas. We estimated that an EUV conversion efficiency of 10% from …
A Decision Aid To Help Farmers Find The Minimum Cost Fertilizer Combination, Gregory Ibendahl
A Decision Aid To Help Farmers Find The Minimum Cost Fertilizer Combination, Gregory Ibendahl
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Fertilizer recommendations are typically given as the pounds of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium needed per acre. Many crop budgets also list the fertilizer costs in terms of the N, P, and K. This can cause a problem for farmers as they must purchase their fertilizer in products that in some cases contain multiple nutrients. These multinutrient fertilizers make it difficult or impossible to calculate a price per unit of a nutrient. Thus, finding the minimum cost fertilizer combination by using a price per nutrient approach may not work. This paper shows how a linear programming approach will always give the …

Expanding On Basis Risk Estimates For Pasture, Rangeland, And Forage Insurance, Ryan Feuz, Ryan Bosworth, Ryan Larsen, Royce Larsen, Sean Klein, Matthew W.K. Shapero, Devii R. Rao, Lynnedee Althouse, Karl Striby
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Basis risk or residual risk arising from disparity between an index’s estimate of losses and actual losses is inherent in index-based insurance products. We approximate basis risk as the false negative probability (FNP) within pasture, rangeland, and forage (PRF) rainfall index insurance for the south-central coastal region of California. We estimate the FNP on average that at least one of two selected coverage intervals will fail to provide an indemnity when a loss is realized at 48%. The average FNP is reduced to only 11% when considering whether both selected intervals fail to provide an indemnity when a loss is …

Goldilocks And The Home Mathematics Environment: Parents' Rate Activities ‘Too Easy,’ ‘Just Right,’ Or ‘Too Hard’ Across Early Development, Patrick Ehrman, Alexa Ellis, David J. Purpura
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Research focusing on the home mathematics environment has shown mixed results across age groups. Using data from a large online survey, we explored parents' perceptions of the age appropriateness of home mathematics activities for their children. Children's ages ranged from one to 6 years old (N = 958). Activities spanned multiple domains of early mathematics including numeracy, geometry, patterning, spatial, and measurement domains. Descriptive statistics show there are clear developmental shifts in the appropriateness ratings for activities within and across these domains. Findings provide insight for future implications on the measurement of the home mathematics environment, as well as …

Eipeck: Assessing Educators’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge For Engineering Integration In K-12, Pilar Pazos, Francisco Cima Cohuo, Jennifer Kidd, Kristie Gutierrez, Krishnanand Kaipa, Orlando Ayala
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Global efforts are underway to include engineering in pre-college curricula. In the USA, this pursuit led to the inclusion of engineering content in the most recent version of the Next Generation Science Standards that guide K-12 science. As these standards become part of the K-12 curriculum, teachers face the challenge of gaining basic engineering literacy, while developing the associated inclusive pedagogies necessary to integrate engineering content into their classrooms. In this context, teacher preparation programs can benefit from easy-to-implement tools that measure preservice teachers’ readiness to integrate engineering content in their future classrooms. This work describes the development and validation …
Comparison Of Conservation Instruments Under Long-Run Yield Uncertainty And Farmer Risk Aversion, Meilin Ma, Carson Reeling, Megan N. Hughes, Shalamar Armstrong, Richard Roth
Comparison Of Conservation Instruments Under Long-Run Yield Uncertainty And Farmer Risk Aversion, Meilin Ma, Carson Reeling, Megan N. Hughes, Shalamar Armstrong, Richard Roth
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Consumers and policymakers are increasingly concerned with environmental sustainability in food production. Yet rates of adoption of many conservation practices vary and are generally low. Existing instruments for practice adoption increase farmers’ expected net benefits from sustainable practices but do not manage associated risks which may be critical to risk-averse farmers. We build a model to characterize practice adoption by risk-averse farmers given practice-driven, long-run yield dynamics under various instruments, including price premiums, lump-sum subsidies and green insurance. We find rich scale and compositional effects that differ across instruments and that green insurance is significantly more cost-effective under plausible conditions.
A General Effectiveness-Ntu Modeling Framework For Membrane Dehumidification Systems, Andrew J. Fix, James E. Braun, David M. Warsinger
A General Effectiveness-Ntu Modeling Framework For Membrane Dehumidification Systems, Andrew J. Fix, James E. Braun, David M. Warsinger
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Selective membrane dehumidification is a promising technology for energy efficient air dehumidification in buildings and has been ranked as a top alternative technology by the Department of Energy. One critical area that needs to be addressed is system modeling that incorporates device mass transfer characteristics and sizing. This work develops, validates, and applies a simple effectiveness-number of transfer units (𝜀−𝑁TU) modeling framework for dehumidification technologies that can be used to predict performance and determine required membrane area for a wide range of technologies, including energy recovery ventilators, vacuum membrane dehumidification, and desiccant dehumidifiers. Although the 𝜀−𝑁TU method is a well-established …
Assessing The Use Of Critical Literacies In Mis/Disinformation Literacy Instruction, Melissa Chomintra
Assessing The Use Of Critical Literacies In Mis/Disinformation Literacy Instruction, Melissa Chomintra
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
In keeping with Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the theoretical perspicacity of Critical Race Theory, Lenoir and Anderson (2023) posit “technical solutions to political problems are bound to fail. Historical, structural, and political inequality—and especially race, ethnicity, and social difference—needs to be at the forefront of our understanding of politics and, indeed, disinformation”. The approaches to mis/disinformation in libraries and information studies have largely been grounded in two forms of literacy education; media literacy and digital literacy. Both media literacy and digital literacy offer a limited generic framing for engaging with digital information and myriad technology and fall short …
Quantitative Methods For Analyzing Second Language Lexical Tone Production, Alexis Zhou, Daniel J. Olson
Quantitative Methods For Analyzing Second Language Lexical Tone Production, Alexis Zhou, Daniel J. Olson
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
The production of L2 lexical tone has proven difficult for learners of tonal languages, leading to the testing of different tone training techniques. To test the validity of these techniques, it is first necessary to capture the differences between L1 and L2 tone datasets. The current study explores three analyses designed to compare L1 and L2 tone: (1) using a single deviation score, (2) using deviation score calculations for specific regions of tone productions, and (3) applying a complexity-invariant distance measure to the two time series datasets. These three analyses were tested using datasets sampled from a previous study testing …
On A Central Problem Of The Human Placenta Project, Charles F. Babbs
On A Central Problem Of The Human Placenta Project, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
This brief technical note describes a design concept for a low-cost, painless, noninvasive monitor of total placental blood flow during the third trimester of pregnancy. The approach may offer an overlooked solution to a central problem of the human placenta project. A systems level biophysical analysis shows that jets of blood flow emerging from spiral arteries in the placenta generate characteristic 1/f or “pink noise” which is routinely audible, but typically ignored, during fetal phonocardiography. The amplitude of the 1/f noise, recorded at a standardized location in an individual patient, is a measure of total placental blood flow that is …

Changes In Highway Expenditures And Revenues In An Era Of Cavs, Volume B: Road Users, Rachel N. Labi, Jalen Smith, Jelin Sabu, Samuel Labi
Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
At the current time, road agencies and city authorities are considering various stimuli (legislations, policies, programs, and infrastructure investment projects) to support or facilitate electric, connected, and/or automation vehicle (ECAV) transportation. A candid and comprehensive assessment of such stimuli is possible only after due consideration of not only the benefits but also costs of each alternative option to each stakeholder. The road user, one of the key stakeholders of any stimulus, refers to an individual vehicle owner, user of a shared vehicle service, or commercial vehicle fleet owner. This report first presents a general evaluation framework that considers road user …

Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
In the era of connectivity and automation, the prospective vehicular applications of these technologies go beyond transportation operations and traffic management. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are capable of centralized control, information sharing through connectivity, and integrated surveillance. Also, CAVs are readily amenable to innovative design concepts, including disease detection devices in the interior design that could inherently help reduce the propagation of infectious disease. The first chapter of this study attempts to shed light on the operation of CAVs during a pandemic to decrease the infection risk in a community. In this regard, a literature review on the fundamental …

Partial- and conditional-automated driving systems (ADS) can not only assist drivers with their driving tasks but also significantly reduce the driving-related burden. Yet still, when the AVS is engaged, the human driver still plays a critical role such as monitoring the driving environment and performing certain driving tasks when called upon by the ADS. There exists ample evidence in the literature on simulation experiments and real-world that point to the difficulty of human drivers to maintain the requisite situational awareness to safely take over the vehicle when needed. This is often due to the nature of the non-driving related tasks …
