“There’S A Connection That Is Just Beyond Words”: A Qualitative Study Of Therapy Dogs In A Child Trauma Assessment Center, Angela M. Moe

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

The utilization of animal-assisted interventions with trauma survivors is a growing field of practice and research. This study explored staff perceptions of the impact of therapy dogs in comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessments of children who have experienced significant maltreatment. Such victimization causes devastating and long-term consequences across physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral domains. Trauma assessments have been used as a means of understanding the impacts of maltreatment and in guiding treatment. Following a go-along qualitative approach, the study occurred over 16 months wherein experienced therapy dogs were incorporated into assessments of 323 children. Data were collected through field interviews and participant …

Animal Assisted Play Therapy® For Childhood Animal Abuse Following Exposure To Family Violence: A Case Example, Katharine Wenocur, Rise Vanfleet

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Intentional harm to nonhuman animals in childhood often correlates with histories of witnessing, experiencing, or perpetrating violence. Without appropriate intervention, children and adolescents who abuse animals following exposure to family violence risk long-term behavioral health challenges. While some treatment models have been specifically designed to reduce the risk of future violence among children displaying this behavior, interventions involving nonhuman animals represent a novel approach and show promise in addressing behavioral challenges associated with this behavior. Framed through the lens of a clinical case study, this article presents the potential benefits of implementing Animal Assisted Play Therapy® to treat symptoms of …

Impact Of Equine Interaction During Psychotherapy On Anxiety And Depression For Residential Treatment Program Patients Experiencing Substance Withdrawal, Molly M. Friend, Molly C. Nicodemus, Clay Cavinder, Caleb Lemley, Pauline Prince, Katherine A. Cagle-Holtcamp, Rebecca M. Swanson

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

As incidences of substance use disorders (SUD) increase in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need for more effective treatment approaches. Further, treatment approaches currently available struggle to retain patients during the period of substance withdrawal in early treatment due to patients’ withdrawal symptoms including increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Withdrawal symptoms have been linked to dysregulated cortisol concentrations present in this period. Psychotherapy incorporating equine interaction (PIE) has emerged in other populations as a treatment that decreases cortisol concentrations and improves treatment retention. The present study investigated the impact of 4 weeks of PIE on …

“Here, Kitty, Kitty.” Community Perceptions Of Free-Roaming Cats: A Northern Canadian Case Study, Annie Booth, Ken Otter Feb 2024

“Here, Kitty, Kitty.” Community Perceptions Of Free-Roaming Cats: A Northern Canadian Case Study, Annie Booth, Ken Otter

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Free-roaming domestic cats (Felis catus) create controversy, due to their tendency to invade neighbors’ gardens, hunt wildlife, and create disturbances. Municipal governments are often under pressure to address concerns regarding free-roaming cats. As approximately 28% of the 8.8 million cats owned in Canada free-roam (are allowed outside unsupervised and unconstrained), understanding owner rationales for letting the cat out is important for officials tasked with addressing public concerns. In 2019, we studied attitudes toward cats within a north-central British Columbia, Canada, city. The rationales cat owners use to justify free-roaming, as well as their perceptions about the risks and …

A Fractal Art Approach To The Three-Body Problem, Charles F. Babbs Feb 2024

A Fractal Art Approach To The Three-Body Problem, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

This preliminary study explores a new search strategy for identifying relatively stable vs. unstable solutions to the planar three-body problem in astrophysics, starting from the perspective of computer-generated art. Here classical Newtonian accelerations, speeds, and positions of all three bodies in a fixed plane are calculated. All three bodies are stationary at time zero, and the fate of the system is classified as reflecting either a bound stable orbit, a likely collision, or the ejection of one body. The initial position of one of the three bodies is varied in the image plane, and the outcome coded as one of …

Sampling-Accelerated Prediction Of Phonon Scattering Rates For Converged Thermal Conductivity And Radiative Properties, Ziqi Guo, Zherui Han, Dudong Feng, Guang Lin, Xiulin Ruan Feb 2024

Sampling-Accelerated Prediction Of Phonon Scattering Rates For Converged Thermal Conductivity And Radiative Properties, Ziqi Guo, Zherui Han, Dudong Feng, Guang Lin, Xiulin Ruan

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

The prediction of thermal conductivity and radiative properties is crucial. However, computing phonon scattering, especially for four-phonon scattering, could be prohibitively expensive, and the thermal conductivity for silicon after considering four-phonon scattering is significantly under-predicted and not converged in the literature. Here we propose a method to estimate scattering rates from a small sample of scattering processes using maximum likelihood estimation. The calculation of scattering rates and associated thermal conductivity and radiative properties are dramatically accelerated by three to four orders of magnitude. This allows us to use an unprecedented q-mesh (discretized grid in the reciprocal space) of 32 × …

The objective of this study was to develop a caretaker-completed questionnaire entitled “Cats’ Behavioral Suitability for Animal-Assisted Interventions” (CatSAAI), covering two categories of items associated with seven feline personality factors. These feline personality factors were previously identified and validated by Mikkola et al. (2021) on a large sample of domestic cat guardians. The aim of the CatSAAI questionnaire is to facilitate the interpretation of the behavioral suitability or unsuitability of each individual cat for inclusion in feline-assisted interventions, while considering the prevention of stress and risks in AAI settings for both people and animals. The tool was proposed by an …

Who Counts As Diverse? The Strategic Broadening And Narrowing Of Diversity, Junming Zhang, Teri A. Kirby Feb 2024

Who Counts As Diverse? The Strategic Broadening And Narrowing Of Diversity, Junming Zhang, Teri A. Kirby

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction: A large majority of US organizations profess a commitment to diversity, but their definitions of diversity can vary greatly. While previous research demonstrates a shift in diversity definitions to include fewer protected demographic groups and more non-demographic characteristics, the present research examines whether this shift might be a motivated process among dominant group members related to anti-egalitarian and colorblind belief systems.

Methods: Using quantitative and qualitative methods, we explored potential underlying ideologies that may be associated with White Americans’ shifting definitions of diversity. White Americans (N = 498) were asked how they define diversity, as well as who …

Apparatus And Methodology For Smart Trainer Homologation Analysis, Teal Dowd, Diana Heflin, Justin Miller, Michael Rogers, Andrei Krasilnikau, Jan-Anders Mansson

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Virtual cycling engagement has seen a significant increase in the last decade, with a recognizable surge in 2020 due to the pandemic. To ensure a fair competition field, a testing apparatus was designed to test direct-drive bicycle smart trainers from various manufacturers. Smart trainers were tested for error on two main metrics: power measurement error and resistance error. Given that the integrity of virtual racing relies upon accurate power readings sent from the smart trainer to a cloud based competition software, discrepancies in these metrics are most likely to affect the outcome of an event. The testing apparatus used a …

Experimental Investigation Of A Heat Pump Tumble Dryer With A Zeotropic Refrigerant Mixture, Melanie Cop, Riley Barta, Christiane Thomas, Ulrich Hesse Feb 2024

Experimental Investigation Of A Heat Pump Tumble Dryer With A Zeotropic Refrigerant Mixture, Melanie Cop, Riley Barta, Christiane Thomas, Ulrich Hesse

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Due to their high global warming potential (GWP), fluorinated refrigerants are being replaced in many heat pump and refrigeration systems. Especially in small systems such as heat pump tumble dryers (HPTD), the replacement of the globally used working fluid in this application, R134a, appears to be manageable. One established alternative is the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants. Within this research project, new zeotropic refrigerant blends of hydrocarbons are theoretically evaluated as retrofit substitutes for R134a in heat pump tumble dryers. The aim is to use the temperature glide inherent to zeotropic mixtures during phase change to increase the heat transfer efficiency …

Eocene (50–55 Ma) Greenhouse Climate Recorded In Nonmarine Rocks Of San Diego, Ca, Usa, Adrian P. Broz, Devin Pritchard-Peterson, Diogo Spinola, Sarah Schneider, Gregory Retallack, Lucas C.R. Silva Jan 2024

Eocene (50–55 Ma) Greenhouse Climate Recorded In Nonmarine Rocks Of San Diego, Ca, Usa, Adrian P. Broz, Devin Pritchard-Peterson, Diogo Spinola, Sarah Schneider, Gregory Retallack, Lucas C.R. Silva

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Nonmarine rocks in sea cliffs of southern California store a detailed record of weathering under tropical conditions millions of years ago, where today the climate is much drier and cooler. This work examines early Eocene (~ 50–55 million-year-old) deeply weathered paleosols (ancient, buried soils) exposed in marine terraces of northern San Diego County, California, and uses their geochemistry and mineralogy to reconstruct climate and weathering intensity during early Eocene greenhouse climates. These Eocene warm spikes have been modeled as prequels for ongoing anthropogenic global warming driven by a spike in atmospheric CO2. Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM, ~ 55 Ma) kaolinitic …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Although manganese (Mn) is a trace metal essential for humans, chronic exposure to Mn can cause accumulation of this metal ion in the brain leading to an increased risk of neurological and neurobehavioral health effects. This is a concern for welders exposed to Mn through welding fumes. While brain Mn accumulation in occupational settings has mostly been reported in the basal ganglia, several imaging studies also revealed elevated Mn in other brain areas. Since Mn functions as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T1 contrast agent, we developed a whole-brain MRI approach to map in vivo Mn deposition differences in the …
