Guided Inquiry Learning (Gil): Enhancing Student Engagement Through Direct Instruction And Active Learning, Jangwoon Lee
Guided Inquiry Learning (Gil): Enhancing Student Engagement Through Direct Instruction And Active Learning, Jangwoon Lee
KAUPA Letters
This article introduces Guided Inquiry Learning (GIL), a teaching approach that combines Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), the Flipped Classroom, and Traditional Lectures. GIL starts with direct instruction to ensure students understand key concepts, followed by collaborative peer activities in the classroom where they apply what they have learned, sharing their knowledge with each other. This method helps students stay engaged, understand the material deeply, and work together in a vibrant environment. The article compares GIL with IBL and the Flipped Classroom, highlighting its benefits and addressing challenges. GIL offers a balanced approach that supports students' learning and engagement without requiring extensive …
The Relevance Of Team Processes For Different Task Characteristics During Performance Episodes And Over Time In Astronaut Crews And Their Support Teams, Vera Hagemann, Lara Watermann, Florian Klonek, Christiane Heinicke
The Relevance Of Team Processes For Different Task Characteristics During Performance Episodes And Over Time In Astronaut Crews And Their Support Teams, Vera Hagemann, Lara Watermann, Florian Klonek, Christiane Heinicke
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Teams working in spaceflight missions belong to the group of extreme teams, as ineffective performance can have serious consequences. Thus, research focuses on understanding team (transition, action, and interpersonal) processes of those teams and their influence on performance. This study investigates the development of team processes in tasks incorporating different task characteristics (generate, choose, negotiate, and execute tasks) on two temporal dimensions (short-term and long-term) in two teams—analog astronauts (AAs) = stable throughout mission and the Mission Support Centre (MSC) = fluctuating members throughout mission—during a four-week analog Mars mission. There were six performance episodes, each incorporating one task that …

Occupational Safety Culture In Modern Aviation Maintenance, Sang-A Lee
Occupational Safety Culture In Modern Aviation Maintenance, Sang-A Lee
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Aviation maintenance is paramount to the safety and efficiency of global air travel. Disturbingly, 2022 data revealed an unprecedented surge in severe injuries among aircraft maintenance technicians in the United States, prompting renewed scrutiny of the aviation maintenance occupational safety culture. In light of these developments, a systematic literature review was conducted to discern the influential factors shaping this safety culture, especially considering the industry’s rapid technological advancements. The review process involved meticulous key word searches, stringent article selection criteria, and qualitative data analysis software to interpret findings. From the synthesis of 35 peerreviewed articles, nine pivotal constructs emerged: (1) …
Stress, Coping, And Psychological Growth In Personnel In A High Arctic Weather Station, Jelena Brcic, Patrick Nicoll, Peter Suedfeld, Phyllis Johnson, Lillian Shurgold
Stress, Coping, And Psychological Growth In Personnel In A High Arctic Weather Station, Jelena Brcic, Patrick Nicoll, Peter Suedfeld, Phyllis Johnson, Lillian Shurgold
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
Ideas about positive change following a stressful experience have been of interest to researchers for some time (Antonovsky, 1987; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996). A few areas of study have been developed, some with a focus on successful coping such as research on resilience, sense of coherence and hardiness, stress inoculation, posttraumatic growth, and toughening (Tedeschi, Park, and Calhoun, 1998). Suedfeld (2001) has encouraged researchers to focus on the positive effects of work in extreme and unusual environments however, only a few have done so with astronauts, cosmonauts (Ihle et al., 2006: Suedfeld et al., 2012), and high-altitude mountaineers (Smith et …
Defining A Management Structure For University Space Analog Research Programs, Scott Van Hoy, Kristen Miller
Defining A Management Structure For University Space Analog Research Programs, Scott Van Hoy, Kristen Miller
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
To learn how humans can safely and effectively live on the surface of the moon or Mars, missions are conducted on Earth that simulate operations on the surface of other planetary bodies. These missions, called space analog missions, require substantial mission planning and organizational management to ensure safe and effective research and operations. The American Public University System’s Analog Research Group developed and tested management structures and philosophies that enable scalable, replicable, and safe analog missions. This fully online research endeavor’s management and internal organization offers a model that academic institutions and private industry can implement to contribute to space …
Additionality Of Solar Tax Incentives Under Community Choice Aggregation In Ohio, Michael L. Smith, Carson Reeling, Michael D. Wilcox
Additionality Of Solar Tax Incentives Under Community Choice Aggregation In Ohio, Michael L. Smith, Carson Reeling, Michael D. Wilcox
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
In the State of Ohio, the electric regulatory landscape permits local governments to become energy suppliers to residents and small businesses through community choice aggregation (CCA). Some CCAs provide enrollees 100% renewable electricity. Concurrently, the federal government offers an income tax credit (ITC) for the purchase of a solar array. With policy incentives, it is important to ensure they encourage behavior beyond the baseline scenario without the ITC. This is known as “additionality.” Renewable aggregation programs may crowd out the benefits of the ITC, violating additionality. This paper assesses additionality of the ITC in the context of Ohio’s CCA programs. …
Developing Students' Sociotechnical Thinking In The Humanities-Engineering Classroom: A Treatment Versus Control Study Using A Scenario-Based Assessment, Lori Czerwionka, Siddhant S. Joshi, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas, Kirsten A. Davis
Davis
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
Background
Engineering problems are open-ended and complex, involving technical and social aspects, yet engineering education focuses on technical training and closed-ended problems. To prepare engineering students, curricula should foster sociotechnical thinking—the ability to consider the interplay of technical and social factors during problem solving. Although educational interventions in this area show promise, further insight into the benefits of interdisciplinary interventions is warranted, particularly with treatment and control group designs.
Purpose
We examine the effect of a Humanities-Informed Engineering Projects (HIEP) course on students' sociotechnical thinking development.
Method
We compared the sociotechnical thinking development of engineering students who took the HIEP …
