This study worked to find differences between the measurements of what parts should be and what they actually were. When a part is manufactured, it is given a nominal measurement which provides the exact geometric numbers representing that section of the part. The true measurements of parts are almost never exactly the same as the nominal measurement, due to varying production issues during component manufacture. A Hexagon Laser Scanner (LS) was used to create computer generated figures of the parts, while Siemens NX, CATIA V5, Creo, Solidworks, and Inventor softwares were used to create Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models of the …

Purdue University researchers have developed a low-cost hog cooling pad which uses ground-based water as a coolant for sows in farrowing crates. Initial testing has proven the positive effects of the unit on sow and piglet productivity, but thus far little research has been done on seeing whether or not the use of the pads reduces water consumption by the animals or how much energy is required to operate the units. This study examined data collected during an indirect calorimetry testing program. Plant-based protein powders are expected to take-on a larger role in human diet as concerns regarding animal-based protein production grow. Unfortunately, not much physical property information about these proteins is available. This study was an attempt by researchers to perform an initial investigation of five powders: Mung bean, peas, pumpkin seed, Fava bean, and Soybeans. Typical particle sizing was determined, along with the surface morphology. Shear testing on the bulk materials was performed to establish the powders’ potential flowability. Non-Newtonian fluids have unique properties which may make them ideal materials to be used in the manufacture of safety equipment. Different types of materials have widely differing properties, and researchers are only now beginning to investigate the physical properties of these various materials. Two different forms of impact experimentation were selected for the ongoing investigation, hammer blow testing and air cart collision testing. Specialty pucks were manufactured, along with control specimens for physical property determination. During the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, the Earth went through significant changes. The Earth transitioned from a warm, relatively wet climate to a cooler and drier climate with the formation of ice caps. The goal of this project was to create a tool to be able to evaluate the ability of a paleo-climate model to predict changes in mean annual precipitation or determine what caused these changes. The main hypothesis was changes in the Δ17O values of nitrate contained in the sediments of the Confidence Hills formation would mark shifts in precipitation during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition. Chemical Enhancement Of Mechanically Fibrillated Nanocellulose (Mcnf) Films For Improved Mechanical Performance, Robert Miller

Mechanically extracted cellulose nanofibrils (mCNF), which have not been chemically modified, were used to create mechanically isotropic films. Crosslinking systems like carbodiimides, poly-functional aziridines, blocked isocyanates, and polyamide epichlorohydrin were added to chemically crosslink the nanocellulose films and improve the mechanical properties. The process to make the casting mixtures involved taking 3.1wt% mCNF, DI water, and a premeasured crosslinker solution to create a three to one ratio of solids for the final mixture of crosslinker to mCNF. Two cases were analyzed with each of the different crosslinkers: one with a viscosifier and one without to determine the crosslinking compound. The …

This mixed-methods study sought to better understand how confidence in writing and race interact as factors within writing centers. Students utilizing our writing center were asked to provide data about racial identity and writing confidence both when registering with the writing center and when completing postsession surveys. From this data, we interviewed a racially representative pool of respondents to better understand their definitions of confidence and the identity factors that have shaped their confidence in writing. Our survey data showed that students’ confidence increased significantly as a result of a writing center session, replicating previous writing center research. Furthermore, we …

English writing centers at Chinese universities present a fascinating paradox. On one hand, the number of universities with writing centers and the professional interest in writing centers in China have grown steadily over the past two decades. But on the other, the number of centers is still modest and only a few centers have had a significant influence on the culture of writing on their campuses, which is surprising given the vast number of universities in China and the documented need for strengthening and expanding writing instruction in English. We Should Promote Genai Writing Tools For Linguistic Equity, Nathan Lindberg

In this essay, I suggest that we should embrace generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) writing tools, particularly chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude), because they can enable linguistic equity by leveling the academic playing field for English as an additional language students. As writing experts, we can find ways to use this technology to enhance learning, and, since we know both student and faculty positions, we can help develop policies so such tools can be used effectively and ethically. Alternatively, we can ignore them and risk becoming irrelevant.

The position of writing center assistant director resides in the middle of the often blurry lines of hierarchy. While many writing centers advocate for team leadership, the fact remains that universities are steeped in bureaucratic tradition familiar to university leaders, students, and tutors. Assistant directors accomplish tasks that keep the day-to- day center functioning, yet these tasks equate to sometimes invisible work in the center and often invisible work in the university as a whole. Although traditional asynchronous tutoring is associated with text-based communication, writing centers are beginning to experiment with asynchronous multimodal tutoring with the assistance of accessible and interactive multimedia technologies and instructional platforms like VoiceThread. Using a mixed-methods approach of surveys and interviews of undergraduate students at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), this study explores the potential benefits of asynchronous multimodal tutoring beyond access and convenience: We examine why students choose to submit their papers for asynchronous multimodal feedback, and whether they perceive that the multimodal aspect of the feedback improves their understanding and enhances their connection with tutors.

This article explores hospitality as a theoretical framework for valuing emotional engagement and rhetorical listening in writing center consultations, challenging traditional views that prioritize rationality and detachment. Anchored in a university writing center, the study investigates how writing tutors engage with writers, adopting hospitality as a core principle. Semi-structured postconsultation interviews and a focus group allowed tutors to reflect collaboratively on their application of the hospitality framework. Thematic analysis with in vivo coding ensured participants’ voices remained central to the findings. Systemic hydration is known to promote optimal functioning of bodily systems—including the vocal folds. The impact of systemic dehydration on the biology of the vocal folds and the downstream effects of dehydration on voice output are not well understood. An in vivo rat model of systemic dehydration was employed to investigate vocal fold gene expression, histological changes, and acoustic changes in vocalization. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were recorded every day for 5 days (baseline), in male and female Long-Evans rats (N = 36, ages: 3–4 months) using an anticipatory reward paradigm. Since the Clean Air Act of 1996 banned the use of leaded fuel for automotive applications, leaded aviation gasoline (AVGAS) has become one of the leading sources of lead pollution in the nation due to the volume of AVGAS consumed in general aviation applications (GAMA, 2019). Learning requires the integration of many skills, with language development being a crucial foundational aspect. Language development across five domains-phonology (the sounds within a language), morphology (word structure/formation), semantics (word meaning), syntax (sentence structure/grammar), and pragmatics (use in varying contexts)-unequivocally supports the acquisition of reading and writing skills. Specifically, morphological knowledge is vital for improving vocabulary, word recognition, spelling and reading comprehension. This practice brief provides an overview of morphological awareness and derived words, provides a rationale for teaching morphological awareness, and instructional strategies supported by science.

Senryu, a satiric and often humorous counterpart to haiku, emerged in mid-18th century Japan as a form of popular self-expression among the rising merchant class. Named after the poet and editor Karai Senryu, this genre focuses on human nature, social behavior, and everyday life rather than the seasonal themes central to haiku. Traditionally composed in a 5-7-5 syllabic structure, modern English-language senryu are often written in free style with fewer than 17 syllables. While frequently humorous, senryu can also capture serious aspects of human experience, including hardship and social issues. Specifically, awareness of morphological structure (e.g., morphological awareness) serves as an avenue for improving vocabulary, word reading, spelling and reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to explore the types and contents of church ministries provided by Korean American churches in the Chicagoland area. Using a conceptual content analysis, this study identified that most Korean American churches disproportionately offer an evangelical ministry to their fellow church members but overlook a compassionate social service ministry to their congregations, other ethnic minorities, the oppressed and unjust social issues. The most offered evangelical ministries are weekly worship services, evangelism, world mission, discipleship training, and Bible study.
