Effects Of Dormitory Design Factors On Migrant Workers’ Mental Health In Singapore, Tianxiang Lan, Yang Miang Goh, Hanxiao Wang, Xinping Hu
CIB Conferences
Migrant workers face vulnerability and unique mental health challenges in their host countries. Housing designs may affect the residents’ mental health, yet few studies have investigated this relationship in the migrant worker dormitory context. In this study, we investigated this question by surveying the design factors of migrant workers’ dormitories and their mental health states measured by the short version of the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS). We found that those migrant workers’ mental health is correlated with whether one has a pleasant window view, defined as green, blue (water feature) or long-distance view. The findings suggest that the elements …

Sufficiency can be defined as a situation when a purpose has been achieved, a need has been met and a desired and optimal state has been achieved. In terms of sustainability, it is seen as a strategy for achieving human needs without exceeding the Earth's planetary boundaries. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has identified sufficiency as having a critical role in achieving climate targets. Sufficiency is also increasingly being integrated in national energy and sustainability strategies. However, sufficiency has not been included as an explicit factor in sustainable and green building rating tools. This study investigates the implications …

CIB Conferences
Construction site safety is a critical concern in engineering and management, yet construction safety culture and climate continue to be a widely discussed and debated topic. Specifically, their mechanisms and the interrelationships among them have rarely been addressed or explored. Among others, this has resulted in their interchangeable use and subsequent confusion. To address this gap, this study examines the interrelationship between construction safety culture and climate using a recently proposed framework. The framework was built on the principle of shared responsibility and involved four safety organizational levels: upper management, safety personnel, frontline supervisors, and workers. A case study approach …

The Viability Of Product-Service Systems In The Uk Built Environment: An Exploratory Appraisal, Sasha Swannell Mr, Alex Copping Dr
CIB Conferences
There is growing industrial consensus that the built environment must rapidly transition to a more circular economy to maximises resource lifespan, minimises waste, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While circularity often focuses on design and waste reduction, new business models are essential for enabling this transition. Product-service systems (PSSs), a circular business proposition centred on product or service usage rather than ownership, has been the subject of growing research. Comprehensive feasibility appraisals on PSSs in this sector, however, are lacking. As such, this study employs Stewart Brand's 'shearing layers' concept to analyse the viability of PSSs in the built environment …
