Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)

Launched in 2024, the Midwest Entrepreneurship Case Competition (MECC) is a regional case competition organized by business librarians and designed for undergraduate students across the Midwest. The competition helps students strengthen their business research skills while competing for prize incentives, generously sponsored by vendors of widely used business databases.

In addition to supporting student learning, MECC facilitates meaningful collaboration among business librarians involved in planning and implementation. It also offers a valuable window into how students engage with business information tools to support informed and strategic decision-making. Common assumptions that believers of witchcraft in the early modern period were uneducated fanatics overgeneralize the complex interplay of early modern science and theology. The study of demons, known as demonology, was considered a science. It was a respected field that was studied and debated. Theologians scrutinized, defended, and revised demonological theories. Thinkers turned over foundational concepts and split hairs over the fine details of theology. Since educated scholars were considered authorities on demonology, they repeatedly wrote, talked, and theorized about the topic in a similar fashion to other ideologies of the early modern era. This paper examines the methods by which Chinese immigrants involved with the construction of the first transcontinental railroad maintained cultural ties to their native China, as well as the changes they made to adapt to their new surroundings. The United States’ first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, primarily at the hands of Chinese immigrants. Despite their massive contribution, no primary documents from Chinese workers themselves are known to exist. Their role in the railroad’s construction was largely forgotten until relatively recently. The Cold War, despite its central focus on the U.S.–Soviet rivalry, marked a period of rapid geopolitical and ideological transformation in the Third World. These changes were best exemplified by radical revolutionary movements that swept across the African continent. For revolutionary leaders, the spread of anti-colonial, socialist, and nationalist ideas represented more than rhetorical sentiments; they had their own visions of sovereignty and self-determination. From the immense political upheaval of the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war protests to the advent of the hippie counterculture and its psychedelic aesthetic, the 1960s is commonly conceptualized as a significantly transformative period in American history, socially, culturally, and politically. While this is certainly an accurate observation, the political and cultural shifts that occurred within this period are typically approached as separate, if not disparate, segments within the development of the period. The mid-20th century saw a boom of scientific discoveries in genetics as people sought to understand the American political landscape through genomes. The desire to understand criminality through genetics rose as counterculture surged. The genetic defect known as “XYY syndrome” became connected to criminality through biased medical studies and sensationalized criminal cases worldwide. When the National Institute of Mental Health began to fund studies attempting to prove a link between XYY syndrome and criminality, organizations concerned with scientific justice took notice. The goal of this bibliometric study was to explore the broader publication patterns of academic librarians in both information and library science (ISLS) and interdisciplinary research for the years 2009 - 2023. Web of Science data were collected for twelve academic libraries. The results showed that while the number of ISLS publications has dropped, interdisciplinary publications have increased dramatically with a broad range of disciplines represented, and collaborations in the medical sciences were a major contributor to this increase. The study suggests that some academic libraries have shifted their priorities over the past fifteen years and that the assessment of …

Women Managing Heart Disease: Involvement Of Spouse And Non-Spouse Care Partners, Elizabeth Richards

Purpose: Heart health is integral to promoting women’s overall health and healthcare. Following a cardiac event, engagement in recommended health-related activities (e.g., maintaining a healthy diet) speeds recovery and improves health. We investigate women’s perception of care partners who are involved in helping manage their heart disease. Methods: Data were drawn from two pilot studies (N = 54); interviews with women from hospital-based outpatient cardiac rehabilitation centers (study one), and online surveys completed by women with heart disease (study two). We compared women’s reports of involvement of their care partner (spouse vs non-spouse) in their health-related activities. Results: The proportion …
