On The Cfd Modeling Approach Of Lubrication System For A Hermetic Reciprocating Compressor: Sliding Mesh Vs Moving Reference Frame, Mustafa Ozsipahi, Prof.Dr.Hasan Güne?, Husnu Kerpicci
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The capacity of inverter compressors is adjusted with speed. Therefore, rotational speed of the hermetic reciprocating compressor is changed in accordance with the requirements of capacity in the refrigerator. Operation at different rotational speed makes the design of oil management system more critical for those compressors. Especially, the preference of operation at lower speeds causes a higher risk for refrigeration applications. Insufficient lubrication of the hermetic compressor causes the compressor to stop working or even become inoperable. Several experimental and numerical studies which are dedicated to overcoming insufficient lubrication problems can be found in the literature. Among these studies, numerical …

Leakage Simulation Of A Lubricant-Free Rotary Type Swing Compressor Rotor Endface Clearance, Yeu De Lim, Wai Chang Poh, Kim Tiow Ooi
International Compressor Engineering Conference
For a dry compressor, internal leakage losses are always significant due to the absence of lubricant. In this paper, a simulation study focuses on the leakage through a rotary swing compressor rotor endface clearance is presented. Leakage is found to increase during the compression process and decreases when discharge process starts. Due to the complexity of the rotor geometry, the leakage simulation is carried out by using a CFD computational code under different operating conditions and the results are then used to be an input to the lumped simulation model to analyze the compressor’s overall performance. With this approach, a …

Full 3d Numerical Analysis Of A Roots Blower With Open-Source Software, Nicola Casari, Michele Pinelli, Alessio Suman, Ahmed Kovacevic, Sham Ramchandra Rane, Davide Ziviani
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In recent years, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been applied for the design and analysis of positive displacement machines (both compressors and expanders) for vapor compression and power generation (e.g., ORCs) applications. In particular, twin screw compressors are widely employed in industrial vapor compression systems because of their high efficiency compared to other compressor types. The numerical modeling of the operation of such machines is challenging: the dynamics of the compression (or expansion) process and the deforming working chambers make the simulation process a not-trivial task. The relative motion of the rotors and the variation of the gaps during machine …

A Study Of Low Gwp Refrigerants For Transport Refrigeration Based On Hermetic Scroll Compressors With An Economizer, Lars Sjoholm, Young Chan Ma
International Compressor Engineering Conference
One hermetic scroll compressor with an economizer port that is built initially for R404A has been tested with R404A in a compressor calorimeter. The testing has been completed on several running conditions to create a compressor operating map. Based on this map, a compressor efficiency model has been created. This model has been used to calculate capacity, COP and discharge temperature for frozen and fresh conditions in the transport refrigeration application with R452A, R454A and R454C. The capacity, COP and discharge temperature for those frozen and fresh conditions are compared with R404A. Another hermetic scroll compressor with an economizer port …

Design Of Gas Channels For A Carbon Dioxide Electrochemical Compressor, Joseph Baker, Yunho Hwang, Chunsheng Wang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The fundamental mechanisms behind electrochemical compression have long been understood. However, only now is the electrochemical compressor coming to fruition. The electrochemical compressor offers several key advantages over the traditional mechanical compressor. Its lack of moving parts eliminates energy losses due to friction and reduces noise. Electrochemical compression of hydrogen has already been realized at scale, but its usefulness is generally limited to fuel cell applications. Additionally, electrochemical compression has been performed with ammonia, but its toxicity limits its practicality. A carbon dioxide (CO2) compressor, however, would have potential applications in refrigeration systems that utilize CO2 as an environmentally-friendly refrigerant …

Geometric Optimization Of Scroll Compressors, Wieland Gelke, Rico Baumgart, Joerg Aurich
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Electric driven scroll compressors are widely used for the A/C systems in electric cars. Besides many other advantages scroll compressors offer comparable good efficiencies and can be used easily in both refrigeration and heat pump mode. Scroll compressors were first introduced in the early 20th century. Over the decades they have been further developed and optimized and became increasingly efficient. Among other things numerical simulations contributed to this process. However, most of the studies focus on the optimization of the scroll wraps and their design. Investigations concerning the discharge geometry of scroll wraps as well as the positioning and the …

Rotary positive displacement machines are common method to pump flow in various process industries. Their performance highly depends on the operational clearances. It is widely believed that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can help understanding and reducing internal leakage flows. However, Developments of grid generating tools for use of CFD in rotary positive displacement machines have not yet been fully validated. Thereby arising a need to validate these models that help in better understanding of the leakage flows. Roots blower is a good representative of positive displacement machines and as such is convenient for optical access to analyse flows in in …

A New Compact Rotary Compressor: Coupled Vane Compressor, Kim Tiow Ooi, Pradeep Shakya
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In this paper a newly invented rotary compressor design called coupled vane compressor will be introduced. It is probably the most compact rotary vane compressor available today. In its basic form, it consists of a rotor, a stator and a coupled-vane. As compared to the existing rotary compressors such as rolling piston compressor, sliding vane compressor it has the most compact design. It is anticipated that for the same working capacity, coupled vane compressor has only half or smaller overall physical size, and thus safe materials usage and machining cost significantly, Due to its smaller physical size, mechanical losses also …

This paper describes an integrated 1D/3D modeling approach for a multi-cylinder double-acting automotive A/C compressor using a multi-physics CAE system simulation software, GT-SUITE. This tool is used to build a 1D flow model of a compressor using the original CAD, along with a 3D multi-body dynamics model to study overall compressor performance. Various flow and mechanical-related built-in libraries, supported with pertinent physics, are utilized to study fluid flow and related forces on the pistons, shaft and the swashplate. There exists an easy approach in the software to schedule the suction and compression cycles in the cylinders. A full 3D modeling …
Performance Comparison Of Empirical And Semi-Empirical Compressor Models With Uncertainty Analysis And Probabilistic Forecasting Techniques, Howard Cheung, Shengwei Wang
Performance Comparison Of Empirical And Semi-Empirical Compressor Models With Uncertainty Analysis And Probabilistic Forecasting Techniques, Howard Cheung, Shengwei Wang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
There are various empirical and semi-empirical models to estimate the performance of compressors. While some studies support the use of empirical methods for their high accuracy with the available experimental observations of compressor performance, others claim that semi-empirical methods can estimate the performance at extrapolation conditions more reliably. To understand if these claims are true, quantitative comparison of various types of compressor models was conducted based on uncertainty analysis. But these methods evaluate the accuracy and uncertainty of the models separately, and it is difficult for model users to comprehend their results. In this paper, the comparison of model accuracy …

Cfd Modeling And Performance Evaluation Of A Centrifugal Fan Using A Cut-Cell Method With Automatic Mesh Generation And Adaptive Mesh Refinement, Yanheng Li, David Henry Rowinski, Karan Bansal, Karthik Rudra Reddy
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a convenient and powerful tool for modeling and evaluating the performance of centrifugal compressors, fans, and pumps. Typically, the use of CFD requires significant labor in mesh generation and refinement. Moreover, for rotating transient simulations, a grid-to-grid interface is usually needed to incorporate the rotating impeller. In this work, a finite-volume-based Cartesian cut-cell method is employed to model a centrifugal fan. Both rotating transient simulations and steady steady multiple reference frame (MRF) simulations are analyzed. The cut-cell-based method automatically generates the Cartesian mesh on-the-fly based on the current location of the rotating boundaries, without requiring …

This paper discusses the implementation and presents the results of a suboptimal nonlinear model predictive controller used to control the suction and discharge pressures of compressors under test in a rig. The objective of this rig is to emulate operational conditions to which refrigeration compressors can be subjected when applied in a refrigeration system, such as household refrigerators and freezers, and allow quick measurements of some of the compressor characteristics under those conditions. There is a coupling between suction and discharge pressures and the behavior of such variables is nonlinear with respect to the valve openings, thus the plant to …

Most compressors in air conditioning (AC) units are designed by trying to minimize the initial cost. The effect of these designs on the operating cost of the system, for the life of the component, is often neglected. This project provides a solution to this issue. The objective of this project is to create an analytical model that simulates an actual AC unit and then use it to arrive at the optimized design variables based on the lowest total life-cycle cost. Performance of a compressor is affected by several factors including compressor speed, suction and discharge pressures, and component geometry and …

Practical Guidelines For Tuning Model-Based Predictive Controllers For Refrigeration Compressor Test Rigs, Hiago A. S. Dangui, Rodolfo C. C. Flesch, Bernardo B. Schwedersky
International Compressor Engineering Conference
This paper presents a practical methodology for tuning the parameters of a model predictive control technique for controlling the suction and discharge pressures of refrigeration compressor in test rigs. Typically, in this type of rig, the compressor under test is subjected to similar conditions as the ones found in refrigeration systems, such as refrigerators and freezers. Even though in industrial practice it is common to find proportional-integral (PI) controllers in such rigs, they are multivariable processes with partial coupling between the variables of interest. Model-based predictive control (MPC) is a control technique which uses an explicit process model to predict …

Comparison Of Measurement Methods For Piston And Crankshaft Kinematics Of Reciprocating Compressors, Leonardo Do Nascimento Cervelin, Alan Batschauer, Carlos Alberto Flesch, Rodolfo C. C. Flesch
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The measurement of the kinematics of reciprocating compressors, such as position, speed and acceleration, is an important part of a wide range of tests. Examples of these tests are the determination of the pV diagram, which depends on the measurement of the piston position; the determination of the Coefficient of Performance (COP), which requires the measurement of angular speed; friction loss experiments, which require the rotational speed and the deceleration of the compressor. Due to their importance for R&D of reciprocating compressors, this paper presents a review of the kinematic measuring methods for reciprocating compressors. Additionally, a test rig was …

Modeling A Reciprocating Compressor Using A Two-Way Coupled Fluid And Solid Solver With Automatic Grid Generation And Adaptive Mesh Refinement, David Henry Rowinski, Jasim Sadique, Sidnei Jose De Oliveira, Marcelo Real
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Computational fluid dynamics has been increasingly used in the design and analysis of reciprocating compressors over the last several years. One of the major challenges in the use of such tools is the creation of the numerical grid on which the modeled equations are solved. Since these compressors typically consist of many interconnected and moving parts, manual creation of the grid can be labor-intensive. Furthermore, it is necessary that the choice of grid yields a sufficiently resolved solution, so that the numerical error is significantly less than the modeling error. In this work, a small displacement refrigeration compressor is modeled …

Refrigeration oil is generally used in refrigerant compressor for lubrication. Recently, a nano-oil, which is a suspension of base lubrication oil and nano-order particles, is proposed to pursue further improvement of refrigeration cycle efficiency. There are many advantages by using nano-oil as lubrication oil in refrigerant compressor; (a) improvement of thermophysical property of lubrication oil, (b) bearing effect at sliding part, and (c) sealing effect of leakage of refrigerant and so on. For actual application of nano-oil to refrigeration system, it is important to investigate the effect of addition of nano-particles to the physical properties of refrigeration oil and its …

Experimental Investigation Of Aqueous Foam Based Heat Transfer In Liquid Piston Compressor For Improvement In Compression Efficiency, Vikram Patil, Pinaki Acharya, Paul Ro
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Isothermal compression results in an efficient compression due to the minimum work input associated with the isothermal process. Recently, the compression of gas using a column of high pressured liquid as a piston (also called liquid piston) has shown better performance in compression efficiency. The liquid piston can achieve a high efficiency of compression through increasing the heat transfer during gas compression by increasing the surface area to volume ratio in the compression chamber. However, to achieve highly efficient near-isothermal compression, the liquid piston needs to have significantly higher heat transfer rate during the compression. Aqueous foam can provide a …

Oil Transport Mechanisms Inside Semi-Hermetic Reciprocating Compressors For Co2 Applications, Jens Mannewitz, Robin Langebach, Ullrich Hesse
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In addition to the gaseous refrigerant an oil-lubricated reciprocating compressor also transports a certain amount of oil into the refrigeration circuit. The amount of oil carried out of the compressor is dependent on the operating conditions and the internal compressor design but is usually assumed to be in the range of a few mass percent. With respect to installation costs, reliability and efficiency of the whole refrigeration system the oil circulation ratio (OCR) should be kept as low as possible. In order to get a better understanding on how oil is transported inside a reciprocating compressor for CO2 applications, the …

Experimental Investigation Of A Hydrocarbon Piston Compressor For High Temperature Heat Pumps, Opeyemi Bamigbetan, Trygve Magne Tme Eikevik Prof., Petter Nekså, Michael Bantle, Christian Schlemminger, Mauro Dallai
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The global trend towards carbon neutral industries require sustainable and climate friendly heat supply. Heat pumps can meet this requirement, but the technical capability today often limit the heat supply temperature to below 90°C. The major challenge in the development of a heat pump that can deliver heat at high temperatures (115 oC) to the heat sink is the operability and performance of the compressor. The compressor electric motor cooling, lubrication stability and material durability are important physical properties to evaluate for a compressor working at high temperatures. In this study, compressors operating with natural fluids such as hydrocarbons are …

International Compressor Engineering Conference
Compared to other types of compressors, linear compressors have drawn much attention for this application due to low friction, low power losses and compactness. Very little work was found in the open literature related to the comprehensive dynamic compressor modeling of linear compressors coupled with mechanical and electrical sub-models. This paper presents a comprehensive and generalized simulation model that is used to simulate the dynamic performance of a linear compressor. The model is based on mass and energy balance equations applied to open control volumes. The overall model is composed of several sub-models that include a piston dynamic model, an …

Experimental Validation And Analysis Of A Dynamic Model For Linear Compressors, Xinye Zhang, Davide Ziviani, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Compared to other types of positive displacement compressors, linear compressors show many advantages due to low friction, low power losses and compactness. Relatively little information is available in the literature with respect to linear compressor performance comparisons between oil-lubricated and oil-free linear compressors. Currently, there are two commercial linear compressors available in the market that are used in residential refrigerator/freezers. One of them uses synthetic POE oil while the other is oil-free. Both compressors operate over a wide range of capacity modulation instead of switching on and off, which results in smaller temperature variations and smaller vibration. The oil-free compressor …
Experimental Investigation Of Water Spray Cooling For Temperature Reduction In Liquid Piston Compressor, Pinaki Acharya, Vikram Patil, Paul Ro
Experimental Investigation Of Water Spray Cooling For Temperature Reduction In Liquid Piston Compressor, Pinaki Acharya, Vikram Patil, Paul Ro
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of spray cooling in a liquid piston compressor during the compression of air in terms of temperature abatement and compression efficiency. The liquid piston can effectively cover any irregular containers making its surface area to volume ratio better than conventional reciprocating pistons. This plays an important role in increased heat transfer to the outer surface resulting in improved efficiency. As the compression process has the minimum work input during an isothermal compression, the process path needs to shift from the polytropic curve towards the isothermal curve for higher efficiency. Recently, …

The growing demand in the market for highly efficient, more reliable and less expensive compressors have activated the manufacturers to develop state-of-the-art analytical tools to predict, evaluate and optimize the existing as well as creating the new designs. Development of a mathematical tool for predicting the dynamic behavior saves considerable time and reduces the unnecessary number of prototypes as well as the development costs. In the present study, a non-linear dynamic model of a three stage single acting reciprocating compressor is developed to predict the entire motion of the compressor. The analytical model prepared for simulation of the motion is …

Investigation On Noise Of Rotary Compressors Using Fluid-Structure Interaction, Seokjong Jang, Hanahchim Choung, Seoryong Park, Soogab Lee
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The noise generated in the rotary compressor can be classified by pressure pulsation of the refrigerant and structural vibration. This paper deals with the noise generated by pressure pulsation of refrigerant in a rotary compressor. During the operation of the compressor, the refrigerant and the internal structure of the compressor have strong interaction with each other. At this time, the oil around the reed valve causes the compressor to overpressure the refrigerant, which is the main cause of noise generation. Therefore, the interaction between the refrigerant and the valve during the compressor operation is analyzed using the FSI technique. The …

Improved Equivalent Simple Model Of Complicated Bypass Leakages In Scroll Compressors, Keiko Anami, Noriaki Ishii, Takuma Tsuji, Charles W. Knisely
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In the previous study for an equivalent simple model to calculate the bypass leakage mass flow rate along the tip seal in scroll compressors, presented in the previous 2016 Purdue Compressor Engineering Conference, it was supposed that the leakage loss through the tangential slot under the tip seal, with a comparatively large cross-section, must be so small that its effect upon the pressure loss can be ignored. However, many studies continued after that showed that the assumption was wrong. That’s why the present study was carefully carried out to present an improved equivalent simple model to calculate the complicated bypass …

As a reliability quantitative specification, parametric accelerated life testing was used to assess the reliability of a newly designed compressor of a commercial refrigerator subjected to repetitive stresses. A generalized life-stress failure model and new sample size equation with a new load concept were derived starting with the basic refrigeration cycle. The sample size equation with the acceleration factor also enabled the parametric accelerated life testing to quickly evaluate the expected lifetime. The design of this testing should help an engineer uncover the design parameters affecting reliability during the design process of the compressor system. Consequently, it should help companies …
