An Indicated Loss Analysis Of A Light-Commercial Spool Compressor Using High-Speed Pressure Measurements, Craig Bradshaw, Greg Kemp, Joe Orosz, Eckhard A. Groll

International Compressor Engineering Conference

An analysis of the indicated and frictional losses is presented for a light-commercial prototype spool compressor. The spool compressor prototype was instrumented with four high-speed pressure sensors, three in the compression process and one in the discharge valve plenum. These sensors were triggered with a high-fidelity rotary encoder attached to the compressor motor shaft. This coupling of rotational position and pressure measurements allowed the development of an indicator (pressure v. volume) diagram for the compression process. Additionally, the added sensor in the discharge valve plenum allowed for a de-coupling of discharge valve losses and flow losses within the discharge plenum …

Free Piston Compressor With A Variable Volume Ratio: Insights On Modeling Approach And Control Strategy, Sergei Gusev, Heinz Vervaeke, Davide Ziviani, Michel De Paepe

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Increasing requirements to heat pump performance ratings as well as pressing environmental concerns force manufacturers to evaluate the potential of natural refrigerants such as ammonia, propane or carbon dioxide, and implement advanced cycle architectures. Beside the use of the appropriate working fluid, the compressor should have ideally an optimal built-in volume ratio (BVR) for any pressure ratio during its operation. Practically, such mode of operation is only possible if the BVR can be made adjustable in real time in order to follow pressure fluctuations due to possible variable heat pump loads. The concept of such a machine with an embedded …

Effects Of Gas Compressibility And Piston Secondary Motion On Leakage In The Piston-Cylinder Clearance Of Reciprocating Compressors, Vitor M. Braga, Cesar J. Deschamps

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Leakage can significantly affect the performance of low-capacity reciprocating compressors, reducing the mass flow rate and increasing energy consumption. In reciprocating compressors, leakage takes place mainly in the piston-cylinder clearance and is brought about by the piston motion and pressure difference between the compression chamber and the shell internal environment. This paper reports a numerical analysis of leakage in the piston-cylinder clearance of a low-capacity reciprocating compressors based on the Reynolds equation for compressible fluid flow. A simulation model is developed and applied throughout the compression cycle to assess the effect of the clearance geometry, piston velocity and piston secondary …

Experimental Investigation Of A Horizontal Hermetic Scroll Compressor With Novel Oil Circuit Design, Jie Wen, Chang Liu, Xueyuan Peng Jan 2018

Experimental Investigation Of A Horizontal Hermetic Scroll Compressor With Novel Oil Circuit Design, Jie Wen, Chang Liu, Xueyuan Peng

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Owing to its reliable operation and low maintenance requirement, the scroll compressor has a potential application for oil and gas industry, e.g. the natural gas production for gas wells with low production and boil-off-gas recovery for gasoline filling stations. Though millions of scroll compressors are put into the refrigeration and air conditioning market each year, a much smaller number of such equipments have been used in the field of oil and gas production. This should be attributed to much larger quantity of compression heat for the natural gas compressor due to higher pressure ratio and larger isentropic exponent, which can …

A Piezoactuated Micro Diaphragm Compressor With A Hydraulic Drive, Dr. Yuanlin Hu, Wen Wang

International Compressor Engineering Conference

A low volumetric efficiency and low actuation force are the two disadvantages of a diaphragm-type piezoactuated micro compressor. A hydraulic drive was introduced to the micro compressor for the sake of improving its volumetric efficiency and actuation force. The hydraulic oil was driven by the piezoactuator and transferred the actuation force to a flexible diaphragm, which compressed the fluid in a domed cavity. Analytical solution was derived to predict the performance (pressure rise and flow rate) of the micro compressor. The solution included large deflections of a flexible diaphragm under a uniform pressure load and non-linear deflections of a diaphragm-type …

Design And Validation Of An Adjustable Dynamic Vibration Absorber For Piping Vibration Suppression In Skid Mounted Compressor Unit, Chang Liu, Jie Ni, Jie Wen, Xueyuan Peng

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The vibration control for a reciprocating compressor as well as piping has always been a challenge. Because of compact installation and limited space for the skid mounted compressor unit, it is difficult to arrange a piping support freely or change the piping layout. A new type of adjustable dynamic vibration absorber (DVA), consisting of an annular clamp and several discrete spring-mass systems (DVA subsystem), was proposed to solve this problem. The spring-mass system of this new DVA used the electromagnet and leaf spring equipped with linear slideway, which permitted continuous adjustment of the DVA’s natural frequency by means of variation …

Research On Vapor-Injected Rotary Compressor Through End-Plate Injection Structure With Check Valve, Yunchen Ding, Baolong Wang, Wenxing Shi

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The refrigerant injection technology can improve the performance of heat pump in low ambient temperature. Traditional end-plate injection of rotary compressor controls the injection by the rotation of the piston, which leads to some drawbacks such as small injection area and bad adaptability to variable working condition. By adopting a check valve system, a novel end-plate gas injection structure for rotary compressor had been put forward to increase injection port area and enhance the adaptability to variable working condition in previous research. In this paper, a vapor-injected rotary compressor prototype is manufactured and tested compared to single stage and two …

A Low Vibration Type Compressor For Refrigerators Using A Self-Standing Support Method, Ko Inagaki, Yasuhiro Bonkobara, Takahiro Kondou, Mie Ike, Takayuki Hamahata

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In household refrigerators, the rotational speed of a reciprocating compressor can be appropriately adjusted according to the temperature inside of the refrigerator. The lower rotational speed reduces the power consumption of the compressor. However, several natural frequencies of the compressor exist in the low rotation region, and besides, the unbalance force arising from the piston motion acts on the internal drive unit. Thereby the vibrations of the compressor are likely to be larger due to the resonance in the low rotation region. Although the compressor on the refrigerator is supported by vibration-proofing materials, such as rubber bushes, it is difficult …

Tribological Properties Of Sliding Elements In Refrigerant Compressors Lubricated By Low-Gwp Refrigerant/Oil Mixtures, Shinichiro Ido, Tatsuya Sasaki, Kota Mizuno, Shuhei Koyama

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In response to global regulation of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, the application of lower GWP refrigerants to air conditioning equipment has been strongly accelerated. Toward the adoption of new refrigerant alternatives, evaluations of tribological properties of sliding elements in compressors are essential because the physical properties of refrigerant oil mixed with the refrigerant strongly affect the seizure resistance of the compressors. Here, we selected several refrigerants including hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) as candidates for a low-GWP refrigerant applicable to refrigerant compressors. We measured the viscosity of lubricating oil mixed with the liquid refrigerant. We also performed seizure resistance tests in …

Fluid Flow Through Front Clearances Of Dry Running Screw Machines Using Dimensionless Numbers, Matthias Utri, Andreas Bruemmer

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Chamber model simulation is a common approach for the simulation of positive displacement machines. For this kind of simulation the clearance mass flow is usually predicted using an isentropic approach, which is corrected with a flow coefficient in order to picture the real flow conditions and the corresponding mass flow. The detailed knowledge of the flow coefficient and its dependencies is crucial for a meaningful simulation of positive displacement machines. This paper investigates the two-dimensional fluid flow through the front clearance of twin screw compressors using the finite volume method. Dimensionless numbers are determined using the PI-theorem and are varied …

International Compressor Engineering Conference

3D CFD modelling is widely employed for the detailed analysis of flow and thermodynamics in complex machines such as twin screw compressors. The advantage of such high resolution simulations is that realistic geometry of the rotors and the ports can be captured. Additionally, the physical effects of fluid thermal interactions and leakage are directly captured by these models. Recent studies have shown that for dry air and oil injected air compressors a good agreement is achieved with measurements, in prediction of performance parameters. In these simulations the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase modelling has been applied. To implement the same model for water …

Experimental Investigation On A Novel Two-Stage Sliding-Vane Air Compressor Based On The Intracooling Concept, Ida Costanzo, Gianluca Valenti, Stefano Murgia, Francesca Baia

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Intercooling is a well-known practice in compression technology for reducing the discharge temperature and the power consumption of the process. Intracooling, a similar yet not identical concept, is the cooling of the compressed gas between two compression stages by way of spraying a liquid coolant in the gas flow without separating that liquid prior to the second compression stage. This liquid coolant can be the cooled lube oil. The present work reports the experimental experience on a first prototype of a small-scale two-stage sliding-vane compressor based on the concept. The prototype is design for a relatively low delivery pressure, 0.7-1.0 …

Effect Of Fluid Flow Inertia And Backflow On The Effective Force And Flow Areas Of Reed-Type Valves, Sergio Koerich Lohn, Ernane Silva, Diego Beppler, Cesar J. Deschamps

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Reed-type valves are used to control the suction and discharge processes in small reciprocating compressors. Simulation models adopted in the preliminary design of such compressors usually employ the concepts of effective force and flow areas to characterize valve performance. These parameters are evaluated considering steady flow through the valve port, and hence neglecting flow inertia in the opening and closing stages of the valve motion. Moreover, both effective areas are also considered not to be affected by the presence of backflow. This paper presents a numerical study about the effect of flow inertia and backflow on the effective flow and …

Research On Low Frequency Vibration Of Rotary Compressor, Zhiming Wen, Yaosi Zhang, Yusheng Hu, Rongting Zhang, Huanhuan Gu, Jinquan Zhang

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Low frequency noise is very boring and penetrating. To a certain domestic air-conditioner, the abnormal low frequency booming noise of the outdoor unit when the compressor operating at certain low RPM's is detected. Experiment and simulation analysis are taken, and it is determined that the 1st order flexible modal resonance of the accumulator is excited at certain operating RPM's which causing structure-borne noise passes through suction pipes. To solve this problem, two projects are produced to optimizing the linking property between accumulator and compressor shell: 1) increasing linking damping to reduce resonance area response; 2) increasing linking stiffness in order …

Numerical Simulation Of Discharge Process In The Single Screw Compressor, Zhao Zhang, Chengyu Peng, Weifeng Wu Jan 2018

Numerical Simulation Of Discharge Process In The Single Screw Compressor, Zhao Zhang, Chengyu Peng, Weifeng Wu

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In the process of the single screw air compressor, the symmetrical grooves of the compressor are periodically connected with the discharge ports and the gas enters the discharge chamber or flows back from chamber, generating gas pulsation. The gas pulsation increases the flowing loss to bring additional energy loss, meanwhile the gas pulsation is the one of main reasons for the generation of vibration and noise. The thermodynamic model of the compression chamber and the discharge chamber of a single screw air compressor is established in this paper taking the discharge chamber structure and the flow resistance into consideration. The …
