Probabilistic Relaxation On Multitype Data, H. M. Kalayeh, D. A. Landgrebe
LARS Technical Reports
Classification of multispectral image data based on spectral information has been a common practice in the analysis of remote sensing data. However, the results produced by current classification algorithms necessarily contain residual inaccuracies and class ambiguity. By the use of other available sources of information, such as spatial, temporal and ancillary information, it is possible to reduce this class ambiguity and in the process improve the accuracy.
In this paper, the probabilistic and supervised relaxation techniques are adapted to the problem. The common probabilistic relaxation labeling algorithm (PRL), which in remote sensing pixel labeling usually converges toward accuracy deterioration, is …

Hydralazine-Enhanced Selective Heating Of Transmissible Venereal Tumor Implants In Dogs, William D. Voorhees Iii, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was designed to test the hypothesis that vasodilator drugs can enhance selective heating of solid tumors by producing a favorable redistribution of blood flow between tumor and normal tissues. Subcutaneous transmissible venereal tumor implants were heated by inductive diathermy using Helmholtz coils in 8 dogs. The temperature rise in tumor and adjacent muscle was measured before and after giving hydralazine (0.5 mg/kg i.v.). Blood flow to the tumors and underlying muscle was measured with radioactive tracer microspheres. Before hydralazine treatment mean muscle blood flow was about one-third tumor blood flow (0.11 0.02 vs. 0.28 0.09 ml/min/g), …

Normal arterioles, in contrast to the abnormal microvasculature of many solid tumors, provide a target for selective drug action that can enhance local heat treatment of the tumors. Measurements of tissue blood flow with radioactive microspheres and estimates of changes in blood flow with thermal clearance methods revealed that vasodilator drugs either decreased or did not alter blood flow in hamster melanoma, rat hepatoma, and canine transmissible venereal tumor, while increasing perfusion in adjacent normal tissues 2 to 4-fold. Solutions of the bio-heat transfer equation, which take into account such selective effects of vasodilators on blood flow in normal tissues, …

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compression In Dogs, Sandra H. Ralston, Charles F. Babbs, Mark J. Niebauer
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to evaluate the hemodynamic effectiveness of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), termed interposed abdominal compression- CPR (IAC-CPR). IAC-CPR utilizes all the steps of standard CPR with the addition of abdominal compressions interposed during the release phase of chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs, and either IAC-CPR or standard CPR was initiated while arterial and venous blood pressures and cardiac output were monitored. The two CPR methods were alternated every three minutes over a period of thirty minutes. The addition of interposed abdominal compressions to standard CPR improved arterial pressures …

Estimating Crop Development Stages From Multispectral Data, J. C. Tilton, S. E. Hollinger
Estimating Crop Development Stages From Multispectral Data, J. C. Tilton, S. E. Hollinger
LARS Technical Reports
Accurate prediction of crop yields requires knowledge of the crop's development stage at critical times during the growing season. Various meteorological models have been developed to estimate crop development. However, the crop planting date, or equivalently, the date the crop reaches a particular crop development stage generally is needed to initialize these models. Recently, efforts have been made towards developing methods for estimating crop development stage from Landsat MSS data. We have developed a technique that is designed to estimate the calendar day that a crop reaches a particular development stage early or late in the growing season. The method …

LARS Technical Reports
Remote sensing is finding its way into the curricula of many colleges and universities, yet the rapid growth of the technology leaves many excellent faculty members at a disadvantage, unable to keep pace with developments and thwarted in their efforts to develop meaningful course work reflecting the breadth of the technology. A recent survey of 30 remote sensing instructors provided a closer look at several aspects of current remote sensing courses and helped refine the list of needs faculty members had previously stated.

Spectral Estimates Of Intercepted Solar Radiation By Corn And Soybean Canopies, K. P. Gallo, C. C. Brooks, C. S. T. Daughtry, M. E. Bauer, V. C. Vanderbilt
LARS Technical Reports
If agronomic variables related to yield could be reliably estimated from multispectral satellite data, then crop growth and yield models could be implemented for large areas. The objective of this experiment was to develop methods for combining spectral and meteorological data in crop yield models which are capable of providing accurate estimates of crop condition and yields. Initial tests of this concept using data acquired in field experiments included: different planting dates, populations, row widths, and soil types, at the Purdue Agronomy Farm are described.
The spectral variable greenness was associated with approximately 80 percent of the variation in LAI …

A Binary Tree Feature Selection Technique For Limited Training Sample Size, M. J. Muasher, D. A. Landgrebe
LARS Technical Reports
An algorithm is presented that predicts the mean recognition accuracy as a function of dimensionality for two class problems, using a Bayes classifier in the presence of a limited number of training samples. Several experiments are presented to assess the algorithm's performance, and a binary tree classification procedure that utilizes the algorithm is shown to prove its usefulness.
