Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line Jun 1983

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The increasing attention given to resource sharing as a concept is not matched by practical progress; shortage of funds makes it more desirable but less practicable, whether libraries try to share their own resources or share a central facility. Many of the obstacles to sharing, such as limited local resources and the inability to handle much external demand, are intrinsic and cannot be solved by technology, but it can nevertheless alleviate some of the procedural hindrances, such as union list construction, maintenance and access and the transmission and switching of requests. The application of electronic technology to document transmission is …

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet Jun 1983

A National Serials Collection In The Netherlands, J. Zandvliet

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A plan has been developed in the Netherlands to share the responsibility for the national science serials collection amongst a large number of libraries. This is an answer to decreasing funding, but it flows from an older tradition of cooperative efforts in interlibrary loans and the union catalogues. For some time, three national subject libraries have worked together in SALINFO, the Science Literature and Information Network, to coordinate the acquisition and cancellation of science periodicals. Seeing that a wider approach was necessary, SALINFO took the initiative to invite more libraries to participate. It became apparant that the key to success …

Simple Methods For Determining The Accuracy Of Tumor Blood Flow Measurements Using Radioactive Microspheres In Rats, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter Jan 1983

Simple Methods For Determining The Accuracy Of Tumor Blood Flow Measurements Using Radioactive Microspheres In Rats, Rosanna C. Chan, Charles F. Babbs, Richard J. Vetter

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Two simple methods are presented that allow positive identification of the accuracy and precision of the microsphere technique and a quick verification of sphere entrapment in tumor vessels. A known flow of Ringer's solution from a motor-driven syringe is perfused through the rat's isolated systemic circulation from left ventricle to right atrium and collected in a funnel. Using this preparation, total blood flow in rats measured with radioactive microspheres injected into the left ventricle was 97% of actual flow. The coefficient of variation (standard deviation/mean) of the microsphere measurements was 0.22. In the same preparation, non-entrapment of microspheres in subcutaneous …

An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1983

An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Reviews in Choice for 310 books were analyzed for how highly they were recommended for college libraries. Each book was given a rating on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect this recommendation. Circulation records for each book covering a 2 to 3.5 year span in the Purdue General Library were also obtained, and a correlation was used to establish a relation between level of recommendation and the use of the book. A Spearman rank order correlation of .137 (p = .008) was found, indicating only a weak relationship between the levels of recommendation and use. When the sample …

Student Reliance On Faculty Guidance In The Selection Of Reading Materials: The Use Of Core Collections, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1982

Student Reliance On Faculty Guidance In The Selection Of Reading Materials: The Use Of Core Collections, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

ABSTRACT Academic librarians have traditionally built undergraduate core collections based on the suggestions of college faculty and on selection tools such as Books for College Libraries and Choice. The assumption that these materials meet the course related reading needs of undergraduates is founded on the premise that the teaching faculty will provide guidance to their students, either directly or through reading lists, in selecting appropriate books. This study, undertaken in the Purdue University General Library, shows that undergraduates do not depend on teaching faculty as a primary resource to aid in the selection of reading materials from the library nor …

Extension Of Laboratory-Measured Soil Spectra To Field Conditions, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, R. A. Weismiller, L. L. Biehl, B. F. Robinson

LARS Technical Reports

Spectral responses of two glaciated soils, Chalmers silty clay loam and Fincastle silt loam, formed under prairie grass and forest vegetation, respectively, were measured both in the laboratory under controlled moisture equilibria, and in the field under various moisture and crop residue conditions. An Exotech Model 20C spectroradiometer was used to obtain spectral data in the laboratory under artificial illumination. Reflectance measurements ranged from 0.52-to 2.32-µm in 0.01 µm increments. Asbestos tension tables were used to maintain a 0.10-bar moisture equilibrium following saturation of crushed, sieved soil samples. The same spectroradiometer was used outdoors under solar illumination to obtain spectral …
