Performance Tradeoffs For Scheduling Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information Over Broadband Integrated Networks, Zafar Ali, Arif Ghafoor Dec 1993

Performance Tradeoffs For Scheduling Pre-Orchestrated Multimedia Information Over Broadband Integrated Networks, Zafar Ali, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report we present a framework for evaluating performance of scheduling preorchestrated multimedia information over broadband integrated networks. We propose a set of Quality Of Presentation (QOP) parameters which quantify the quality of multimedia presentation from user's point of view. The communication of mulltimedia data in a networked environment can affect the desired QOP parameters due to jitter delays in the network. We evaluate trade-offs between QOP parameters and the system resources including channel utilization and buffering at the destination. These trade-offs can be used to develope an optimal transmission schedule for multimedia information.

Pre-Clinical Roc Studies Of Digital Stereomammography, Jean Hsu, Charles F. Babbs, David M. Chelberg, Zygmunt Pizlo, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper reports the diagnostic performance of observers in detecting abnormalities in computer generated mammogram-like images. A mathematical model of the human breast is defined in which breast tissues are simulated by spheres of different sizes and densities. Images ar'e generated by casting rays from a specified source, through the: model, and onto an image plane. Observer performance with two viewing modalities (stereo versus mono) is compared. In the stereo viewing mode, left and right images are presented to the observer (wearing liquid crystal shuttle glasses), such that the left eye sees the left image only and the right eye …

Asap: A Transistor Sizing Tool For Speed, Area, And Power Optimization Of Static Cmos Circuits, Santanu Dutta, Sudip Nag, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper introduces an automated transistor sizing tool (ASAP) that incorporates accurate gatelevel functio~nalm odels and can be used for delay, area, and power optimization of CMOS combinational logic circuits in a VLSI design environment. ASAP considers the performailce improvement of VLSI CMOS circuits by optimally sizing the transistors on the first N critical paths. The global picture of the circuit is considered by taking into account the effects that the transi.stor size changes of one path have on the others. The optimization technique in our sizing tool is based on simulated annealing and couples accurate delay modeling with power …

A Selective Committee Architecture For Time Series Prediction And Pattern Classification, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio Nov 1993

A Selective Committee Architecture For Time Series Prediction And Pattern Classification, Antonio G. Thome, Manoel F. Tenorio

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report we describe a novel technique to generate a committee architecture for time series prediction. The algorithm, here named Selective Multiple Prediction Network, consists of three steps: a systematic partition of the input hyperspace, a selective training of many agents and a flexible combining strategy. Potencially uncorrelated agents are generated which improves the combination process. The proposed architecture is easily extended to the class of classification problems.

Circuit Optimization By Transistor Reordering For Minimization Of Power Consumption Under Delay Constraint, Sharat C. Prasad, Kaushik Roy Oct 1993

Circuit Optimization By Transistor Reordering For Minimization Of Power Consumption Under Delay Constraint, Sharat C. Prasad, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper we address the problem of optimization of VLSI circuits to minimize power consumptioin while meeting performance goals. We present a method of estimating power consumptioin of a basic or complex CMOS gate which takes the internal cap, acitances of the gate into account. This method is used to select an ordering of series-connected transistors found in CMOS gates to achieve lower power consumption. The method is very efficient when used by library based design styles. We describe a multi-pass algorithm which makes use of transistor reordering to optimize performance and power consumption of circuits, which has a linear …

A Tighter Lower Bound For 1-D Bin-Packing, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper,, Russell Quong Jul 1993

A Tighter Lower Bound For 1-D Bin-Packing, Heng-Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper,, Russell Quong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

For NP-complete problems, it may not be possible to find an optimal solution in polynomial time. However, efficient approximation algorithms for many NP-complete problems do exist. A good approach is to find tighter upper and lower bounds on the optimal solutions. As the gap between these two bounds approaches zero, optimality is reached. For minimization problems, any feasible solution serves as an upper bound. In general, researchers attempt to find heuristic algorithms to narrow the gap by decreasing the upper bound. Another approach is to narrow the gap by increasing the lower bound. To determine a good lower bound on …
