A Tighter Lower Bound For Optimal Bin Packing, Heng Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper, Russell W. Quong Jun 1995

A Tighter Lower Bound For Optimal Bin Packing, Heng Yi Chao, Mary P. Harper, Russell W. Quong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we present an O(n1ogn) algorithm to compute a tighter lower bound for the one-dimensional bin packing problem. We have simulated the algorithm on randomly generated bin packing problems with item sizes drawn uniformly from (a, b], where 0 5 a < b 5 B and B is bin size. Using our lower bound, the average error of BFD is less than 2%. For a + b > B, the error is less than 0.003%.

Image Representation And Compression Using Multisplines And Adaptive Scale-Space Atom Selection , Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap Jun 1995

Image Representation And Compression Using Multisplines And Adaptive Scale-Space Atom Selection , Shankar Moni, R. L. Kashyap

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We define a new stochastic process for representing images. We call this process the Ordered-Tree process (OTP). We show the existence of such a process and derive the optimal compression algorithm for such a process. Experimental results have indicated that the algorithm outperforms many existing image compression algorithms. In order to define the stochastic process, we first define a Tree-Structured analysis (TSA). This is a generalization of a multiresolution analysis (MRA) that extracts only those properties of an MRA that serve well in image compression. In particular, we place no requirement on self-similarity or orthogonality of basis functions. We give …

An Object-Oriented Query Language For Multimedia Database Systems, Young Francis Day, Arif Ghafoor Jun 1995

An Object-Oriented Query Language For Multimedia Database Systems, Young Francis Day, Arif Ghafoor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a general-purpose multimedia query language that is built upon a set of generalized n-ary spatio-temporal relations and object-oriented modelling paradigm for multinnedia data. We present a grammar for the query language and elaborate how various functionalities such as declartion of multimedia data, specification of spatio-temporal logic, expression of spatio-temporal semantics for content-based retrieval of image/video data, composition of multimedia documents, and orchestration of presentations can be supported through this language. Currently, the language is being implemented using object-oriented concepts imd the Postgres database management system.

Differential Current Switch Logic: A Low Power Dcvs Logic Family, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy Apr 1995

Differential Current Switch Logic: A Low Power Dcvs Logic Family, Dinesh Somasekhar, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We present a new logic family, Differential Current Switch Logic (DCSL) for implementing clocked CMOS circuits. The circuit is in principle a differential cascode voltage switch logic circuit (DCVS). In cornparimsonto other forms of' clocked DCVS, DCSL achieves better performance both in terms of power and speed by restricting internal voltage swings in the N tree. Automatic lock-out of inputs on completion of evaluation is a novel feature of the circuit and allows new implementation of logic functions and the possibility of operating with reduced voltage swings. SPICE simulattions carried out with. the MOSIS 1 . 2 process indicate that …

Fast Solution Techniques For A Class Of Optimal Trajectory Planning Problems With Applications To Automated Spray Coating, Ramanujam Ramabhadran, John K. Antonio Mar 1995

Fast Solution Techniques For A Class Of Optimal Trajectory Planning Problems With Applications To Automated Spray Coating, Ramanujam Ramabhadran, John K. Antonio

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Optimal trajectory planning problems are often formulated as constrained variational problems. In general, solutions to variational problems are determined by appropriately discretizing the underlying objective functional and solving the resulting nonlinear differential equation(s) and/or nonlinear programming problem(s) numerically. These general solution techniques often require a significant amount of time to be computed, and therefore are of limited value when optimal trajectories need to be frequently computed and/or re-computed. In this paper, a realistic class of optimal trajectory planning problems is defined for which the existence of fast numerical solution techniques are demonstrated. To illustrate the practicality of this class of …

Its Wireless Narrowband Digital Communication Architecture Design Report, Michael P. Fitz,, Jimm Grirnm, Tim Magnusen, Wen Yi Kuo, Tai Ann Chen, Jerome Gansman, Lance Bodnar

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This report provides a detailed overview of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) narrowband digital communicator project. The project is the building and fiel~dte sting of a high performance modem architecture on the 220MHz radio channels allocatied to ITS. This architecture will provide greater than 12kbitsls transmission rate by using state of the art techniques to develop a new paradigm in bandwidth efficient land mobile communications. The main goals; are to develop a recursive model based optimum demodulator and to implement the architecture necessary for actual field tests. The modulation scheme optimizes the use of transmitter antenna diversity, forward error control …

Ultra Low Energy Computing Using Adiabatic Switching Principle, Yibin Ye, Kaushik Roy Mar 1995

Ultra Low Energy Computing Using Adiabatic Switching Principle, Yibin Ye, Kaushik Roy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper presents a new family of logic gates for ultra low energy computing using pulsed power CMOS logic. The logic gates use the principles of adiabatic switching principle and results show that in typical cases 90% of the energy can be recovered with operating frequency around IMHz. Constant capacitance condition is enforced in our designs so that signals' energy can be efficiently recycled in the chip. We also present a detailed analysis and modeling of energy dissipation. The models were experimentally validated using the circuit simulator SPICE. We also simulated a serial adder (mod 2) implemented using the reversible …

Asymmetric Corporate Exposures To Foreign Exchange Rates, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer Jan 1995

Asymmetric Corporate Exposures To Foreign Exchange Rates, Kent D. Miller, Jeffrey J. Reuer

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Research examining firms' economic exposures to exchange rate movements has not differentiated periods of foreign currency appreciation and depreciation when estimating exposure coefficients. Recent theoretical developments regarding real options and pricing-to-market suggest corporate exposures may be asymmetric (i.e., the financial performance impact of a foreign currency appreciation may not be offset by the currency's depreciation). Through an empirical examination of manufacturing firms' economic exposures to exchange rate movements, this paper furnishes evidence on exposure asymmetries.
