Peru has shifted away from centralized mining management to governance among government, companies, and communities. Various mechanisms facilitate community participation, including the mining canon, dialogues, and corporate social responsibility programs. Even with these laws and mechanisms, mining pollution and conflicts continue. In this study, we ask: how do communities perceive and participate in mining governance? And what are some alternative ways, driven by community priorities, to address governance in mining contexts? We collected 53 semi-structured with agricultural actors in two Peruvian districts with mining activity and analyzed those perspectives through the lens of community-centered governance. Our analyses revealed how centering …

Perceptions And Practices Of Key Worker Stakeholder Groups In Hospital Animal- Assisted Intervention Programs On Occupational Benefits And Perceived Risks, Kathryn R. Dalton, William Altekruse, Peter Campbell, Kathy Ruble, Karen C. Carroll, Roland J. Thorpe Jr., Jacqueline Agnew, Meghan F. Davis
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Background: Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) programs, used widely for patient benefit, have increasingly been used for healthcare workers (HCW) to reduce occupational stress. However, there are barriers to these programs which limit their utilization, for both patients and HCW, specifically infectious disease concerns. The aim of the research project is to identify barriers and facilitators to AAI program use for healthcare worker benefit, and determine knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding infectious disease risk and control policies, in order to understand the contextual parameters of program implementation.
Methods: We collected perceptions of key stakeholders involved with hospital AAI programs (HCW and AAI …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Background
Adolescent substance use has long been a top public health priority. In Indiana, concerning recent trends show high rates of youth alcohol consumption coupled with increasing use of opioids, synthetic marijuana, and over-the-counter drugs. Based on research indicating that parent-based prevention efforts may be a particularly effective way to target adolescent substance use, and in a direct effort to address Indiana’s 2017 Strategic Plan to Address Substance Use, we conducted an applied research study targeting parents’ knowledge regarding adolescent substance use in Indiana.
Methods
This community-based applied research study included: (i) a needs assessment of Indiana Extension Educators’ concerns …
Assessing Learning Processes Rather Than Outcomes: Using Critical Incidents To Explore Student Learning Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
Assessing Learning Processes Rather Than Outcomes: Using Critical Incidents To Explore Student Learning Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
There is an increasing emphasis on assessing student learning outcomes from study abroad experiences, but this assessment often focuses on a limited range of outcomes and assessment methods. We argue for shifting to assessing student learning processes in study abroad and present the critical incident technique as one approach to achieve this goal. We demonstrate this approach in interviews with 79 students across a range of global engineering programs, through which we identified 173 incidents which were analyzed to identify common themes. This analysis revealed that students described a wide range of experiences and outcomes from their time abroad. Students’ …

Adaptation And Validation Of The Patient Assessment Of Chronic Illness Care In United States Community Pharmacies, Omolola A. Adeoye-Olatunde, Naomi Pratt, Evan Schmidt, Margie E. Snyder
Department of Pharmacy Practice Faculty Publications
Background
Roles for United States (US)-based community pharmacists in caring for persons with chronic conditions have greatly expanded. The Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) was developed to assess patients’ perspectives of care received. However, successful application of this instrument in community pharmacies is uncertain. The objective of this study was to adapt the PACIC for use in community pharmacies (CP-PACIC), assess validity of the CP-PACIC and examine CP-PACIC scale score differences relative to patient characteristics.
Methods
This cross-sectional study surveyed chronically ill adults in Indiana, US who receive care from pharmacists in community pharmacies. The modified CP-PACIC scale …
Twin Tub Girder Retrofits For System Redundancy, Francisco J. Bonachera Martin
Twin Tub Girder Retrofits For System Redundancy, Francisco J. Bonachera Martin
Purdue Road School
Due to the perceived risk of fracture critical members (FCM) in steel bridges, hands-on inspection are man- dated. This presentation describes the redundancy evaluation of three twin tub girder bridges with FCM designations. The analysis follows the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Analysis and Identification of Fracture Critical Members and System Redundant Members. Based on the outcomes of these analyses, the feasibility of retrofit alternatives will be assessed for the purpose of reclassifying FCMs as system redundant members.

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act has the potential to impact a project even after construction. This presentation is designed for LPAs with projects that may have resulted in an adverse effect finding on cultural resources during a Section 106 review, thus requiring a memorandum of agreement (MOA). The panel will explore what it means to have an MOA, provide insight on common conceptual mitigation measures, and define responsibilities for the implementation of MOA stipulations.

Record-Breaking Trenchless Tunneling Success Demonstrates Value On Sr-37, Eric Farny, Michael Flanagan
Purdue Road School
Trenchless tunneling methods were key to the INDOT SR 37 project’s success by providing drainage for new depressed interchanges. Gravity outfall sewers were selected over pump stations, which eliminated long-term O&M costs. This presentation explains how trenchless methods were successful in difficult ground and groundwater conditions. Approximately 1.4 miles of 54-inch-diameter storm sewers were successfully installed using trenchless tunneling methods, including a record breaking 2,304-foot-long curved micro tunnel boring machine (MTBM) run.
Integrating Project Delivery - Design, Row, And Utilities, Matthew Witt, Kenny Franklin
Integrating Project Delivery - Design, Row, And Utilities, Matthew Witt, Kenny Franklin
Purdue Road School
Utilities and ROW acquisition are two of the three most common critical path items for project delivery. Successful project teams build an awareness of these two processes early and strategically in their project. This interactive session focuses on improving reliability in project delivery by integrating a utility conflict management approach into design and project management, identifying when and how to use advanced utility investigations, and where ROW and utility coordination efforts strategically intersect.

Proactively Upgrading Aging Infrastructure For Multi-Modal Corridor Renewal, Michael Mills
Proactively Upgrading Aging Infrastructure For Multi-Modal Corridor Renewal, Michael Mills
Purdue Road School
Indiana is experiencing urban renewal. Urban multi- modal corridor renewal in an aging, socioeconomically challenged area has its challenges on the surface; however, what is underground can be equally challenging. In Florida, Burgess & Niple partnered with FDOT and the City of Tampa to proactively resolve the flooding on 8 miles of one-way pairs. Twelve existing 100-year-old drainage systems discharging to the Hillsborough River were modeled and upgraded, setting the foundation for the surface Complete Streets improvements.

It Takes A Village: Contract Administration Letting Preparation, Elizabeth Thomas
Purdue Road School
Once a contract is submitted to Final Tracings, that is the last time a designer hears anything about it (unless problems arise). For many, contract administration is a “black box” that requires an excessive amount of time to prepare contracts. This session provides clarity on the internal preparations of a contract as it is readied for advertisement, including cost estimating, PS&E review, and fiscal applications.
