Problem Lah! Learning To Tell The Story Of Continuous Assessment And Improvement, Tamera Hanken Jun 2014

Problem Lah! Learning To Tell The Story Of Continuous Assessment And Improvement, Tamera Hanken

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

To succeed organizations rely on the purposeful application of the management functions, planning, organizing, leading and controlling, i.e., assessment. Assessment involves the collection and analysis of service and performance data to inform planning, organizing and leading-- opening the door to a culture of assessment and continuous improvement. Like other organizations responding to ever challenging economies and ever changing customer expectations, libraries are examining continuous improvement methods such as Lean, or Six Sigma, to ensure operations and services are customer focused and can be continuously assessed and improved with limited resources. Librarians though, often lack a general understanding of assessment and …

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney Jun 2014

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney

Charleston Library Conference

It has been said that the work of publishers and librarians will merge over time until we are all publarians and lublishers. Do we still envision a shared future? As new publishing programs within libraries and experimental publisher-library collaborations continue to challenge us to move outside of our comfort zones, are we learning from each other? What are some practical, down-to-earth ways that we can take advantage of each other’s expertise? How can we produce and market scholarly content in a more integrated way to meet the needs of scholars in a digital-information ecosystem, without duplicating effort on separate tracks? …

What Provosts Think Librarians Should Know, Jeanine Stewart, Elizabeth Paul, John Vaughn, James J. O'Donnell Jun 2014

What Provosts Think Librarians Should Know, Jeanine Stewart, Elizabeth Paul, John Vaughn, James J. O'Donnell

Charleston Library Conference

Three senior leaders will reveal what Provosts worry about when they think about libraries. Charged to be frank and direct, they will talk about what they value in libraries, but also about what the challenges are that they face that affect how they think about libraries. Budget, facilities, and their perception of what faculty and students want and need will all play into this. This session is an opportunity for a frank exchange of views with real provosts—without worrying about how they react!

Introducing Agile Principles And Management To A Library Organization, Daniel Forsman, Peter Hansson Jun 2014

Introducing Agile Principles And Management To A Library Organization, Daniel Forsman, Peter Hansson

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries are pressured to adapt to changing conditions due to user demands, behavior, emerging technologies and a need for cost-efficient solutions. Software companies have turned to agile development to stay competitive and to deliver working solutions in a short timeframe. Agile processes are built upon co-operation, iterative workflows and delivering working solutions with a high business value. Agile development and management in an agile organization constitutes a controlled framework of principles with a promise to ensure that the organization focuses on the right things and is able to adapt to new needs.

Assessing An Animal Humane Society Using Mckinsey’S 7s Framework To Make Recommendations For Organizational Improvement, Tandreia Sherice Dixon Apr 2014

Assessing An Animal Humane Society Using Mckinsey’S 7s Framework To Make Recommendations For Organizational Improvement, Tandreia Sherice Dixon

Open Access Theses

An organization's effectiveness is predicated upon the degree of fit and alignment of its internal components. Organizational effectiveness and alignment are both essential to successfully create and implement strategies within an organization. An animal humane society suffering from employee turnover wanted to improve their organizational effectiveness. There were strategies and recommendations provided for employee turnover; in hope of successful implementation, the researcher investigated the animal humane society further by evaluating the current state of the organization with an organizational framework. The McKinsey 7s's Strategic Readiness Survey derived from the McKinsey 7s framework was used to evaluate the current state of …

A Methodology For Designing Airports For Enhanced Security Using Simulation, Oliver Nwofia, Christopher A. Chung Jul 2013

A Methodology For Designing Airports For Enhanced Security Using Simulation, Oliver Nwofia, Christopher A. Chung

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

With the advent of the new security measures, today’s airports have become increasingly complex and congested. Air and passenger traffic continues to increase; consequently, the need for intelligent design concepts is required. Unlike all other existing airport designs that focused exclusively on operational performance, this study focused on the development of a new airport terminal design methodology that takes a proactive approach to minimizing the effects of security disruptions while simultaneously maximizing operational performance and passenger flow. The study addressed the impact of security operations on both the design of airport facilities and passenger flows, and discussed options and scenarios …

Hubs And Centers As Transitional Change Strategy For Library Collaboration, Julie Speer, Brian Mathews, Tyler Walters Apr 2013

Hubs And Centers As Transitional Change Strategy For Library Collaboration, Julie Speer, Brian Mathews, Tyler Walters

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Libraries of science and technology universities worldwide are adapting to a changing environment where cyberinfrastructure, eResearch, and new technology-intensive approaches to teaching and learning are transforming the very nature of universities. While many have adopted new technologies and the resources and expertise to manage them, this is only an initial step. Libraries are experimenting with organizational models that will transform their work capacity and expertise. The goal of these libraries is being an entity that feeds and produces collaborative synergies between faculty, students, information professionals, and technologists. Virginia Tech, among the top research universities in the United States, and its …

Stories Of Journalistic Careers: From Serial Killers To The Changing Nature Of Journalism, Linda Hughes-Kirchubel Jan 2013

Stories Of Journalistic Careers: From Serial Killers To The Changing Nature Of Journalism, Linda Hughes-Kirchubel

Open Access Theses

A career narrative is a story that helps a person define who she is, and how she should act, within the context of career (Meijers & Lengelle, 2012). This thesis is an analysis of three distinct, yet related, career narratives: a metanarrative, a mesonarrative, and a micronarrative. I examine the field of journalism through metanarratives that reflect the sea-change brought about by the advent of the Internet and the production of on-demand news (see 111th Congress, 2009; Rainey & Wellman, 2012; Weldon, 2008). Using the story of two serial killers, I show how the industry has begun to think differently …

Small & Medium Enterprises - Their Views Of Product Data Management Tools, Karen Waldenmeyer, Nathan W. Hartman Jan 2013

Small & Medium Enterprises - Their Views Of Product Data Management Tools, Karen Waldenmeyer, Nathan W. Hartman

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

This study was conducted as a means to discover common traits associated with small and medium manufacturers, especially ones who have adopted product data management (PDM) systems as a method to control engineering design and manufacturing data. After qualitative interviews were conducted with leading experts across industry sectors, a survey was developed and sent to small and medium manufacturers in the United States. The study concludes a number of interesting findings about the state of PDM usage within various segments of the industry, including general uses for engineering design systems, level of data exchange with customers and suppliers, and satisfaction …

The Art Of Regenerative Leadership: Language, Spirit, And Principles, Judith A. Sturnick

Education and Culture

What are the arenas where leadership and culture can be revitalized? In my own history of three university and college presidencies (public and private, traditional and non traditional), a stint in Washington, DC, as Vice President and Director of the Office of Women in Higher Education at the American Council on Education, the establishment of my own international business in executive leadership coaching and consulting, my work as a writer and teacher of leadership theory (including leadership and gender), and my experiences facilitating leadership training for developing nations under the auspices of the United Nations, I have consciously struggled with …
