School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Background
In response to the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a K–12 workforce development initiative was launched to embed microelectronics education across US school districts. To promote sustainability, the initiative employed a district-wide vertical alignment strategy that progressively integrates microelectronics content and engineering-related career experiences from kindergarten through high school. While vertical alignment is often used for curriculum planning, its broader potential as a systems-level strategy remains underexplored.
Purpose
This study investigated how vertical alignment functions within a K–12 engineering workforce development initiative, focusing on enablers/barriers toward expanding and sustaining integration efforts. The research questions addressed stakeholder experiences with the …

Introducing Therapy Dog Programs Within Organizational Settings: A Scoping Review Of Implementation Processes And Practices, Laura Mundy, Carlie Driscoll, Janette Young
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Organizations are introducing therapy dog programs at a growing rate. Standards and guidelines for including therapy dogs in programs with people are also being developed and made available to those implementing such programs. How organizations are implementing programs, how they are aligning with available standards, and the presence of any barriers and facilitators to their implementation has been largely unexplored. Therefore, the aim of our review was to summarize the literature available on the implementation of therapy dog programs within organizational settings. Furthermore, we aimed to summarize available descriptions of program practices and their alignment with best practice guidelines, and …
Research Synthesis Of Predicting Part 135 Accident Probability In Aviation: How The Bayesian Brain Ignores Declining Safety Standards, Jonathan R. Clarke
Research Synthesis Of Predicting Part 135 Accident Probability In Aviation: How The Bayesian Brain Ignores Declining Safety Standards, Jonathan R. Clarke
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Technological innovation has had an enormous effect on safety in aviation. However, in Part 135 operations, where technology is not as ubiquitous, the accident rates have plateaued. Human error is constantly misrepresented as being responsible for 70–80 percent of accidents, when it is clearly only one of several contributing factors. In commercial aviation, all accidents should be considered organizational failures, because by definition all defensive layers have been breached. Organizational failure, as it affects safety, should be identifiable and predictable from organizational behavior. Inevitably, in the aftermath of accidents the warning signs of poor behavior are seemingly obvious, yet there …

Offsite Manufacturing (OSM) has repeatedly been extoled as a panacea solution for addressing ‘traditional’ construction challenges – ergo: time, quality and cost. However, it is posited here that there are grounds to challenge this preconception, particularly from a technology perspective, given industry’s need to align to Industry 5.0. Arguably (and somewhat contentiously), the industry is still in the process of trying to understand the concepts underpinning Industry 4.0. Thus, in order to understand this perceived disparity, this research used the antecedents from CIB’s Offsite Production and Manufacturing research roadmap (TG74 – publication 372) produced in 2013 as a starting point …

This study explores the integration of Lean and Agile methodologies, known as “Leagile”, in the construction industry. Lean construction emphasizes continuous workflow and process optimization to reduce waste, while Agile management embraces the inevitability of change, promoting continuous discovery and learning throughout a project’s lifecycle. Clearly, both approaches require effective communication with project stakeholders and customers to enable iterative improvements. In recent years, the concept of “Leagile”— blending these two methodologies — has already been successfully applied in various sectors such as manufacturing and supply chain management. However, in the construction industry, the hybridization of Lean and Agile management is …

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced most workers to work from home (WFH). At first glance, this seems not to be a significant change for academics, who, even in regular times, are used to performing their research activities autonomously and balancing on-campus and off-campus locations. Instead, precisely because of their flexible habits, it is interesting to study where academics worked during the COVID-19 pandemic and which factors relate to their location choices. This paper addresses these issues using survey data from 7,865 Italian-tenured academics. First, cluster analysis unveils four main location choices of Italian academics during the COVID-19 pandemic depending on …

Organizational performance is a critical metric for evaluating business success, yet measuring it in construction organizations poses significant challenges due to the industry's inherent complexities, such as its fragmented, project-based structure. Researchers have developed various performance measurement models to address these challenges, including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) framework. Despite the widespread use of these models, their application (in what contexts) and integrative use (how they are used together) remain underexplored in construction studies. This study addresses this gap by examining how KPIs, BSC, and EFQM have been applied …

From Intent To Action: Reconciliation And Inclusion In Three Canadian Academic Libraries, Lisa O'Hara, Talia Chung, Vivian Lewis
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
A sense of belonging and inclusion creates conditions for individuals and organizations to thrive. Many Canadian university libraries have been initiating actions which advance reconciliation with Indigenous communities in Canada, and to support equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. Efforts to operationalize reconciliation and inclusion share important qualities yet require distinctive approaches due to historic and contemporary factors. Reconciliation in Canada must recognize the significance and centrality of the land to Indigenous communities. While inclusion strives to more broadly create conditions in which individuals may thrive, with a focus on those from groups who have historically faced systemic barriers. For both …

Reckoning With Organizational Identity And Innovation In Research Libraries, Neil Romanosky
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Who or what an organization thinks it is—its sense of identity—greatly informs the choices it makes. Yet an organization’s identity, which provides coherence and stability, may constrain or enable an organization’s capacity for innovation, which at its core is about doing new or different things. This paper explores the dynamics of organizational identity and innovation through a qualitative study involving leaders from eleven U.S. and Canadian academic research libraries—organizations and a profession that are experiencing an abundance of change and identity threats. A major finding of this research is that the very process of scoping and defining innovation can enable …
