Pandemic Phase: Where’S Democracy Now?, Andrea Bennett-Kinne
Pandemic Phase: Where’S Democracy Now?, Andrea Bennett-Kinne
Education and Culture
This essay draws from a pragmatic feminist approach. It outlines the importance of relational ethics and Deweyan democracy to educational practices using the exploitative situation of emergency remote learning and women teachers to show the impact of systems that were in place before the COVID-19 pandemic, but which have become more concerning within those parameters. Such systems include the educational technology industry and the datafication of education. These systems rest in neoliberalism and concern their means and ends with economic gain instead of the importance of human relations. The essay suggests that centering relational ethics and relying on educational democracy …
Feminist-Pragmatist Perspectives On Online Education: Challenging And Changing Online Educational Conversation, Krissah Marga B. Taganas
Feminist-Pragmatist Perspectives On Online Education: Challenging And Changing Online Educational Conversation, Krissah Marga B. Taganas
Education and Culture
This paper is exploratory in a sense: I explore the possibility of feminist pragmatism as a pedagogical position compatible with online education. I argue in this paper that feminist pragmatism (FP) can be an important philosophic resource to continually challenge and change the online educational conversation. Contemporary feminist pragmatism is a conscious effort of women philosophers who took inspiration from the works of major women pragmatist thinkers, as well as others, especially John Dewey. Early women pragmatists developed a fruitful collegial relationship with John Dewey and collaborated on studies and issues that shaped Dewey’s pragmatism. FP’s main tenets include an …
How To Teach Machines In Artificial Intelligence? Technical Education In John Dewey, Gilbert Simondon And Machine Learning, Olivier Del Fabbro
How To Teach Machines In Artificial Intelligence? Technical Education In John Dewey, Gilbert Simondon And Machine Learning, Olivier Del Fabbro
Education and Culture
A society that uses drills and conditioning to train its machine learning models risks creating an alienated situation between human and machine in social life, as these teaching methods generate a lack of responsibility for the actions produced by such machines. Both John Dewey and Gilbert Simondon present conceptions and ideas that shed a different light on such alienated human– machine relationships in machine learning: that is, a critique of mere drilling and training as an educational method; the mode of existence of technical objects; and the importance of experience and practicality, for example, learning by doing. After giving an …

Responsible Imagineering: John Dewey's Pluralistic Ethics And Technological Innovation, John A. Machielsen
Education and Culture
I argue for taking John Dewey’s pluralistic ethics as a starting point, or embedded practice, from and in which technological innovations are conceptualized, critiqued, designed, tested, and eventually implemented. Dewey reconstructs human reason into operational intelligence where all behavior becomes gradually imaginative. I take Dewey’s view of moral deliberation as a basis for a responsible process-based methodology combining creative technological design with the training of imaginative prospection. I further use Dewey’s conception of technology that holds that implements, but also ideas and concepts are tools, forms of technology. I end by looking at the educational impact for the creative industries.

Palmer amaranth (PA) is one of the major weeds in sweetpotato reducing its quantity and quality. The widespread and repeated use of chemical herbicides has led PA to develop resistance for such chemicals. In addition, chemical herbicides are incompatible with the organic production system. It is imperative to find sustainable weed management strategies to provide weed control suitable for organic cultivation and detain the development of herbicide-resistant weeds under conventional crop production. In the present study, seventeen sweetpotato varieties were screened for their allelopathic (weed-suppressing) effect on the growth of PA. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a …

End Effect Of Corroded Steel Bar In Concrete Specimen During Corrosion Test By Galvanostatic Method, Peng Zhao, Gang Xu, Qing Wang, Xuan Wang
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The galvanostatic method is a commonly used accelerated corrosion method in studying the durability of concrete structures caused by steel corrosion. If this method is not adequately controlled, the ends of steel bars will be corroded seriously (this phenomenon is called end effect), which is not common in natural corrosion. How to effectively control the end effect during electrified corrosion is helpful to make the characteristics of electrified corrosion more similar to that of natural corrosion. In this paper, experimental and electromagnetic numerical simulation methods are used to study the influence of cathode and corrosion medium coverage area along the …

End Effect Of Corroded Steel Bar In Concrete Specimen During Corrosion Test By Galvanostatic Method, Peng Zhao, Gang Xu, Qing Wang, Xuan Wang
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Corrosion of steel bars is the main durability problem of concrete structures, which seriously endangers the safety and service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. When studying such problems, the electrifying corrosion method is often used to obtain corroded components. How to effectively control the corrosion area of steel bars is the key to improve the applicability of the corrosion method. In this paper, experimental and electromagnetic numerical simulation methods are used to study the influence of cathode and corrosion medium coverage area along the longitudinal direction on the corrosion area of steel bar before concrete protective layer corrosion cracking. …
Frost Resistance And Pore Structure Properties Of Mortar Containing Air Entraining Agent Combined With Superabsorbent Polymer, Yanqun Xu, Qiang Yuan
Frost Resistance And Pore Structure Properties Of Mortar Containing Air Entraining Agent Combined With Superabsorbent Polymer, Yanqun Xu, Qiang Yuan
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The air entraining effect of air entraining agent (AEA) is deeply affected by environment, which will further influence its function of improving frost resistance. To solve this problem, a strategy of using AEA combined with superabsorbent polymer(SAP) to improve the frost resistance of mortar was proposed in this study. Mass loss and relative dynamic elastic modulus of mortar were used to characterize frost resistance of mortar. Air void density, spacing factor, air void distribution and air content were measured to analyze its pore structure properties. The results verify that the combined use of AEA and SAP can improve the frost …
The Transportation Of Corrosion Products In Cementitious Material Under Chloride-Rich Environment, Yuzhou Wang
The Transportation Of Corrosion Products In Cementitious Material Under Chloride-Rich Environment, Yuzhou Wang
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Corrosion products, forming on steel bar in cementitious material, can lead to concrete cracking. Clear the transportation of corrosion products is of great significance to predict corrosion-induced structural deterioration. This study investigates the corrosion products in steel-reinforced concrete specimen. By Raman spectroscopy and SEM method, the chemical constituents and micromorphology of corrosion products at steel-concrete interface as well as those inside the pore of cement paste are investigated. The proportion of corrosion products filling into the cement paste is determined by EDTA titration method. The results reveal that corrosion products diffuse in forms of ion in solution under chloride-rich environment, …

On The Role Of The Microstructure In The Deformation Of Porous Solids, Sansit Patnaik, Mehdi Jokar, Wei Ding, Fabio Semperlotti
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
This study explores the role that the microstructure plays in determining the macroscopic static response of porous elastic continua and exposes the occurrence of position-dependent nonlocal effects that are strictly correlated to the configuration of the microstructure. Then, a nonlocal continuum theory based on variable-order fractional calculus is developed in order to accurately capture the complex spatially distributed nonlocal response. The remarkable potential of the fractional approach is illustrated by simulating the nonlinear thermoelastic response of porous beams. The performance, evaluated both in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency, is directly contrasted with high-fidelity finite element models that fully resolve …

Interference Of Morningglories (Ipomoea Spp.) With ‘Fascination’ Triploid Watermelon, Jeanine Arana, Stephen L. Meyers, Wenjing Guan, William G. Johnson
Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
Morningglories (Ipomoea spp.) are among the most troublesome weeds in cucurbits in the United States; however, little is known about Ipomoea spp. interference with horticultural crops. Two additive design field studies were conducted in 2020 at two locations in Indiana to investigate the interference of ivyleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea Jacq.), entireleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederacea Jacq. var. integriuscula A. Gray.), and pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.) with triploid watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai]. Immediately after watermelon was transplanted, Ipomoea spp. seedlings were transplanted into the watermelon planting holes at densities of 0 (weed-free control), 3, 6, 12, 18, and …

Controlled Digital Lending, Equitable Access To Knowledge And Future Library Services, Xuan Pang, Peggy Glatthaar
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) became a popular term in the United States of America (USA) libraries as a result of a white paper authored by Kyle K. Courtney (Harvard University) and David Hansen (Duke University). (Citation?) The white paper gave the legal groundwork to explore the copyright aspect of CDL: Fair Use, First Sale Doctrine and Supreme Court rulings. The white paper also provided guidelines for Library professionals implementing this new technology to fulfill their users’ needs. Inspired by the recent CDL guidelines developed by Courtney and Hansen (2018) two librarians from the University of Florida (UF), and Florida …
Community Outreach And Engagement In A Time Of Crisis: The Peer Research Consultants Program, Lauren Fralinger, Shatha Baydoun
Community Outreach And Engagement In A Time Of Crisis: The Peer Research Consultants Program, Lauren Fralinger, Shatha Baydoun
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Peer Research Consultants (PRC) program at the University of Miami Libraries (UML), was formed in 2016 as part of the Learning Commons initiative to collocate and centralize academic services at Richter Library. Although the program had a virtual component in the form of chat and phone services when founded, it was primarily a physical setup where library student workers assisted researchers using a peer-to-peer system. In this paper, we highlight the historical trajectory of the peer research consultant (PRC) program in academic libraries using Richter Library as a case study. We argue that the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic …
Rethinking Organizational Structures To Support Digital Innovation, Lindsey Wharton, Devin Soper
Rethinking Organizational Structures To Support Digital Innovation, Lindsey Wharton, Devin Soper
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper presents a vision for supporting the growth and development of innovative digital services in research libraries. While libraries have been undergoing digital transformation for decades, we have seen a flowering of new digital services in recent years, from research support services related to data and digital publishing to learning support services that seek to make our pedagogy more accessible, engaging, and suited to the needs of 21st-century learners. The question of how best to support these services structurally within an organization remains an open one, however, and there is little consistency in how this is accomplished across different …
Tools Against Predators? Transparency, Education, And The Courage To Speak Up, Kristýna Paulová
Tools Against Predators? Transparency, Education, And The Courage To Speak Up, Kristýna Paulová
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The existence and growth of predatory practices damage the reputation of open science and jeopardizes the idea of science transparency as a whole. This article introduces the tools against predators developed as part of the Stop Predatory Practices project. The project was divided into three phases. In the first phase, an analysis of the current situation in the Czech Republic was carried out. We organised an open discussion, during which participants from the scientists, librarians and other parts of the academic community talked about the systemic problems, misunderstandings and obstacles they face in the area of predatory practices. Based on …
