Light Ray Tracing Through A Leaf Cross Section, R. Kumar, L. Silva Jan 1972

Light Ray Tracing Through A Leaf Cross Section, R. Kumar, L. Silva

LARS Technical Reports

A light ray, incident at about 5° to the normal, is geometrically plotted through the drawing of the cross section of a soybean leaf wing Fresnel's Equations and Snell's Law. The optical mediums of the leaf considered for ray tracing are: air, cell sap, chloroplast and cell wall. The above ray is also drawn through the same leaf cross section considering cell wall and air as the only optical mediums. The values of the reflection and transmission found from ray tracing agree closely with the experimental results obtained using a Beckman DK-2A Spectroreflectometer.

1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment Data Processing, Analysis, And Interpretation, Terry L. Phillips Jan 1972

1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment Data Processing, Analysis, And Interpretation, Terry L. Phillips

LARS Technical Reports

The nature of the Corn Blight Watch Experiment and available resources to conduct the experiment dictated that there be several centers of activity supporting the overall objectives. Mr. Robert MacDonald described in an attached paper the experiment overview and participants. Dr. Marvin Bauer described the corn blight problem. In other attached papers Mr. Richard Allen discussed the sampling model and ground data measurements program while Mr. Ronald Blilie presented the aircraft data acquisition for the experiment. In this paper the Corn Blight Watch Experiment will be described from the point of view of data processing, analysis, and interpretation procedures. Data …

Results Of The 1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment, Robert B. Macdonald, Marvin E. Bauer, Richard D. Allen, Joseph W. Clifton, Jon D. Erickson, David A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

A serious and unexpected epiphytotic of southern corn leaf blight reduced the nation's corn crop by 15 percent as a new race of this previously minor disease swept through the Southern and Corn Belt states during July and August, 1970. The disease appeared so suddenly and moved with such speed that accurate information on its extent and severity was not compiled until well after the end of the growing season.

Research by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS) in 1970 had shown that three stages of blight infection could be accurately classified from small scale color infrared photography …

Data Handling And Analysis For The 1971 Corn Blight Watch Experiment, P. E. Anuta, T. L. Philips, D. A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

In the summer of 1971 the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing at Purdue University conducted a pioneering experiment in the application of remote sensing technology to a large scale earth resource surveillance problem. In 1970 a plant disease called the Southern Corn Leaf Blight infected large areas of corn production in the United States and it is estimated that total national corn production pas reduced by 15% due to this disease. In the winter of 1970, an experiment was designed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, NASA, and the University of Michigan Institute of Science and Technology's …

The Use Of Social Media By Terrorists, Jan Balk, Benjamin Clarke, Charles Stembler

The Use Of Social Media By Terrorists, Jan Balk, Benjamin Clarke, Charles Stembler

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Student Policy Briefs

With the rise of digital technology, particularly social media, terrorist groups have gained a valuable new tool for furthering their goals. Terrorist propaganda, for the purposes of this brief, is defined as any video, picture, post, or any other form of media posted to the internet to further the cause of the terrorist organization, such as recruitment or communication with followers around the world. The manipulation of technology by non-state actors is not a new phenomenon; however, social media and other new digital technologies have proven a valuable resource for many terrorist organizations. Not only have terrorist groups been adept …

Electromagnetic Propagation Velocities In An Inhomogeneous Or Random Atmosphere, G. R. Cooper, Robert Eugene Harrison Jul 1962

Electromagnetic Propagation Velocities In An Inhomogeneous Or Random Atmosphere, G. R. Cooper, Robert Eugene Harrison

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This thesis is concerned primarily with determination of statistics for the velocities of propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a dispersive medium. The velocities of propagation are discussed in terms of a plane travelling wave solution of Maxwell's equations obtained using the multiple Laplace transformation and complex inversion integrals. The types of dispersion discussed correspond to a magneto-ionic, electron displacement and polar resonances of the ionosphere and troposphere. The physical nature of the randomness of the dispersive index of refraction is derived from considerations of statistical turbulence theory. Expressions are then obtained for determining the mean, mean square and variance …
