Interactive Image Processing For Meteorological Applications At Nasa/Goddard Space Flight Center, James B. Billingsley, Frederick A. Hasler

LARS Symposia

Interactive image data processing has greatly improved the capability to extract scientific information from satellite image data. Previous methods of batch processing did not allow the scientist to interpret intermediate results on a short enough time scale to effectively modify either the data or processes as required for efficient data extraction.

A primary Goddard Space Flight Center meteorological program objective is to develop methods to improve detection and prediction of severe storms using geostationary satellite measurements. Interactive data processing systems can perform many tasks towards meeting this objective.

The development of interactive image processing techniques which have led to meteorological …

The Role Of Computer Networks In Remote Sensing Data Analysis, P. H. Swain, T. L. Phillips, J. C. Lindenlaub

LARS Symposia

It has been hypothesized that computer networks can be used to make data processing facilities available to the remote sensing community both quickly and effectively. An experiment to test this hypothesis is being conducted by the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing at Purdue University, with the participation of potential users at several remote sites. Initial indications have been highly favorable, although final evaluation awaits further experience and the accumulation of usage data.

On The Management And Processing Of Earth Resources Information, C. W. Skinner, R. C. Gonzalez

LARS Symposia

The basic concepts of a recently-completed large-scale earth resources information system plan are reported. Attention is focused throughout the paper on the information management and processing requirements. After the development of the principal system concepts, a model system for implementation at the state level is discussed.

Remote Wind Profile Measurement At Optical Frequencies Using A Spectral Density Approach, John E. Nuwer, Jack Smith, Fred J. Taylor, Thomas H. Pries Oct 1973

Remote Wind Profile Measurement At Optical Frequencies Using A Spectral Density Approach, John E. Nuwer, Jack Smith, Fred J. Taylor, Thomas H. Pries

LARS Symposia

The spectral properties of the intensity of a light beam, propagated in a turbulent atmosphere in the presence of wind shears, are studied. The theory of light propagation in a turbulent media is presented. Special attention is given to developing the theoretical characteristics of a spherical wave. These theoretical relations are numerically analyzed. The analysis indicate that the problem of remotely measuring winds can be automated. Several machine techniques are offered to accomplish this task.

An Evaluation Of Machine Processing Techniques Of Erts-1 Data For User Applications, David Landgrebe Jan 1973

An Evaluation Of Machine Processing Techniques Of Erts-1 Data For User Applications, David Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

For some years research has been underway to learn how to use computing machines for the processing and analysis of remotely sensed data. The motivation of this work is not to produce an automatic analysis system, but to utilize computing machinery for the repetitive and routine aspects of the total analysis and processing problem in order to minimize the costs and increase the throughput rate.

Machine Processing For Remotely Acquired Data, D. A. Landgrebe Jan 1973

Machine Processing For Remotely Acquired Data, D. A. Landgrebe

LARS Technical Reports

This paper is a general discussion of earth resources information systems which utilize airborne and spaceborne sensors. It points out that information may be derived by sensing and analyzing the spectral, spatial and temporal variations of electromagnetic fields emanating from the earth surface. After giving an overview system organization, the two broad categories of system types are discussed. These are systems in which high quality imagery is essential and those more numerically oriented. Sensors are also discussed with this categorization of systems in mind.

The multispectral approach and pattern recognition are described as an example data analysis procedure for numerically-oriented …

Basic Forest Cover Mapping Using Digitized Remote Sensor Data And Automatic Data Processing Techniques, M. E. Coggeshall, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1973

Basic Forest Cover Mapping Using Digitized Remote Sensor Data And Automatic Data Processing Techniques, M. E. Coggeshall, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

Increasing demands on the forest resource will necessitate increasingly more intensive management in the future. In order to achieve this goal, reliable and timely information over large geographic areas will be required. Remote sensing techniques offer much potential for the procurement of such information.

This research, then, was pointed toward study of that potential. Four objectives were established as follows: 1) to determine the optimum number of the available twelve multispectral scanner (MSS) wavelength bands to use for forest cover mapping with automatic data processing (ADP) techniques; 2) to determine the current capability to map basic forest cover using MSS …

Reflectance Model Of A Plant Leaf, R. Kumar, L. Silva Jan 1973

Reflectance Model Of A Plant Leaf, R. Kumar, L. Silva

LARS Technical Reports

A light ray, incident at about 5° to the normal, is geometrically plotted through the drawing of the cross section of a soybean leaf wing Fresnel's Equations and Snell's Law. The optical mediums of the leaf considered for ray tracing are: air, cell sap, chloroplast and cell wall. The above ray is also drawn through the same leaf cross section considering cell wall and air as the only optical mediums. The values of the reflection and transmission found from ray tracing agree closely with the experimental results obtained using a Beckman DK-2A Spectroreflectometer. Similarly a light ray, incident at about …
