Obama, Africa, And The Post-Racial, Michael Janis
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Obama, Africa, and the Post-Racial" Michael Janis examines aspects of U.S. president Barack Obama's election in the context of the epistemology and history of racism. Following an introduction to the history of racism in Europe and in the U.S., Janis discusses the media in the U.S. and in Africa in relation to African American and African politics. The debates on race ignited by the campaign are considered in the light of Africana perspectives on relations between Africa and the West and on the history of slavery and colonialism. Based on selected data in the media of the …
Representing Postmodern Marginality In Three Documentary Films, Robert Leblanc
Representing Postmodern Marginality In Three Documentary Films, Robert Leblanc
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Representing Postmodern Marginality in Three Documentary Films" Robert LeBlanc traces the emergence of new epistemologies of documentary film experience within the cases of three recent films that explore the subject's experience of marginality as central to its constitution as subject. These films -- by Marlon Riggs, Chad Friedrichs, and Jessica Yu -- explore the crises of self-representation engaged by their documentary subjects as these subjects seek to define themselves despite -- and yet through -- their experiences of marginal status, while avoiding a reinforcement of that status that could arise through its continued placement into narrative. The …

Transcriptional Analysis Of The Unicellular, Diazotrophic Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Atcc 51142 Grown Under Short Day/Night Cycles., Jörg Toepel, Jason Mcdermott, Tina C. Summerfield, Louis A. Sherman
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cyanothece sp. strain ATCC 51142 is a unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium that demonstrates extensive metabolic periodicities of photosynthesis, respiration, and nitrogen fixation when grown under N2-fixing conditions. We have performed a global transcription analysis of this organism using 6 h light:dark (L:D) cycles in order to determine the response of the cell to these conditions and to differentiate between diurnal and circadian-regulated genes. In addition, we used a context-likelihood of relatedness (CLR) analysis with these data and those from 2 d L:D and L:D plus continuous light experiments to better differentiate between diurnal and circadian-regulated genes. Cyanothece sp. acclimated …

The Impact Of The Holocaust In America, Zev Garber
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
The contributions to this volume consider topics such as the immigrant experience in coming to America after the trauma of the Holocaust; how the Shoah has shaped more recent interpretation of the Hebrew Bible; the role that survivors have fulfilled in educating American youth not only about the Holocaust itself, but also about how values - especially in regard to tolerance - can and must be shaped by eye-witness testimony on the Shoah; the impact of Holocaust in film, especially in "third-generation" cinema; the issues and difficulties of presenting the Shoah in children's literature; the dialogue between Christians and Jews, …
High Efficiency Excitation Of Plasmonic Waveguides With Vertically Integrated Resonant Bowtie Apertures, Edward C. Kinzel, Xianfan Xu
High Efficiency Excitation Of Plasmonic Waveguides With Vertically Integrated Resonant Bowtie Apertures, Edward C. Kinzel, Xianfan Xu
Birck and NCN Publications
In recent years, many nanophotonic devices have been developed. Much attention has been given to the waveguides carrying surface plasmon polariton modes with subwavelength confinement and long propagation length. However, coupling far field light into a nano structure is a significant challenge. In this work, we present an architecture that enables high efficiency excitation of nanoscale waveguides in the direction normal to the waveguide. Our approach employs a bowtie aperture to provide both field confinement and high transmission efficiency. More than six times the power incident on the open area of the bowtie aperture can be coupled into the waveguide. …

Are Adolescent Attitudes Toward Calcium-Rich Foods And Intake Of Dietary Calcium Related To The Presence Of Grandparent(S) Living In The Household?, Leslie Cradler
CFS Honors Program Undergraduate Theses
Introduction. Early adolescents are a group at risk for reducing calcium intakes during a time of maximal bone accretion. Sociological research suggests that grandparents can positively influence their grandchildren’s self esteem. Therefore, this study hypothesized that early adolescents from households with a grandparent(s) would have a more positive attitude toward calcium-rich foods and a higher consumption of total calcium than their counterparts in households without a grandparent(s).
Methods. This study used a cross-sectional design involving the administration of a questionnaire to a child (10 - 13 y) and a questionnaire to the adult responsible for food acquisition and preparation in …
Development And Evaluation Of A Tool To Assess Television Viewing During Meals And Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Families Receiving Services From Efnep, Fnp, And Wic, Rebecca Howden
CFS Honors Program Undergraduate Theses
Studies have shown an association between the frequency of family meals and the meal time environment and the dietary quality of those meals, including the presence of fruits and vegetables. One aspect of meal time environment that may be an important factor is television viewing during meals. The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate a family meal assessment tool to measure television viewing during meals and fruit and vegetable consumption within families served by the programs targeted by Indiana’s State Nutrition Action Plan (SNAP). A quantitative survey of family meal assessment questions was pilot tested with a …

Differences In Response To “No Bones About It!” Between Boys And Girls, Amy Conklin
Differences In Response To “No Bones About It!” Between Boys And Girls, Amy Conklin
CFS Honors Program Undergraduate Theses
Early adolescence is a critical time for skeletal development, as this is when maximal bone growth occurs (1). Development of bones mass during adolescence can help reduce the risk for childhood fractures and osteoporosis later in life. Low calcium intakes can contribute to poor bone health and can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis (2). An adequate intake of 1300 milligrams per day of calcium was set for both male and female adolescents by the Institute of Medicine (3). Unfortunately, most adolescents do not attain this recommendation. Thus, researchers have aimed to investigate various effectively reaching young people to adopt …

The Projected And Perceived Image Of The United Republic Of Tanzania, Tammy Reiko Koerte
CFS Honors Program Undergraduate Theses
While Tanzania has enjoyed increasing popularity as a tourism destination, there is a lack of research on Tanzania's tourism image. Tanzania 's tourism growth, however, depends upon the congruency of its projected and perceived images.
This research examines the government's projected image of Tanzania and measures its congruency with the image perceived by past visitors to Tanzania. The study utilized the Tanzania Tourist Board and Tanzania Travel and Tourism Online websites as well as 364 blogs on travel to Tanzania between 2003 and 2008 from TravelPod.
This research presents valuable information on the congruency of Tanzania's images and identifies the …
Practices For Seamless Transmission Of Design Data From Design Phase To Construction Equipment Operation: A Synthesis Study, Philip S. Dunston, James Monty
Practices For Seamless Transmission Of Design Data From Design Phase To Construction Equipment Operation: A Synthesis Study, Philip S. Dunston, James Monty
JTRP Technical Reports
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), in response to requests from the construction contracting community, has chosen to examine how to facilitate their contractors’ use of three-dimensional machine control (3D-MC) systems, especially GPS-based systems. INDOT recognizes that the prerequisite 3D project model, if available in its intelligent electronic form, may be leveraged by both INDOT and its project partners to automate the performance of tasks other than construction. Therefore, INDOT was compelled to initiate this study to investigate the state of technology and the experiences of other state transportation agencies (STAs) and to synthesize that information to formulate recommendations for …

JTRP Technical Reports
On-site treatment of wastewater at highway rest areas poses some unique and difficult challenges because of the rural locale, high variability in wastewater flow rate and strength, and lack of knowledgeable personnel on-site. As a potential alternative, a constructed subsurface wetland system was built at the I-70 rest stop nearby Greenfield, Indiana, in 2003. This wetland system, mainly composed of three wetland cells, also includes draw-and-fill and recirculation mechanisms to increase oxygen transfer to the wastewater and improve the overall treatment performance. Special considerations for highway rest areas have been emphasized. A dynamic hydraulic model was developed to help characterize …
Single-Cell Profiling Reveals The Origin Of Phenotypic Variability In Adipogenesis., Thuc T. Le, Ji-Xin Cheng
Single-Cell Profiling Reveals The Origin Of Phenotypic Variability In Adipogenesis., Thuc T. Le, Ji-Xin Cheng
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Phenotypic heterogeneity in a clonal cell population is a well-observed but poorly understood phenomenon. Here, a single-cell approach is employed to investigate non-mutative causes of phenotypic heterogeneity during the differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into fat cells. Using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy and flow cytometry, adipogenic gene expression, insulin signaling, and glucose import are visualized simultaneously with lipid droplet accumulation in single cells. Expression of adipogenic genes PPARγ, C/EBPα, aP2, LP2 suggests a commitment to fat cell differentiation in all cells. However, the lack of lipid droplet in many differentiating cells suggests adipogenic gene expression is insufficient for lipid droplet …

Guidelines For Indot-Mpo Coordination, Myron Matlock, Jon D. Fricker
JTRP Technical Reports
Federal legislation, such as the Safe Accountable Flexible Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), mandates that each state’s Department of Transportation (DOT) coordinate with the Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) within the state in the development and implementation of their Long-Range Transportation Plans. However, federal legislation does not indicate how the DOT and MPOs should work together, resulting in varying collaborative strategies from case to case. Developing a set of collaborative strategies that MPOs in the state of Indiana and the DOT could use during the transportation planning process could result in faster information processing and improved …

Mitigating The Expansive Behavior Of Chemically Treated Soils, Sochan Jung, Maria Caterina Santagata
JTRP Technical Reports
Sulfate-induced heave, resulting from the chemical treatment of sulfate rich soils, has been known to cause significant damage to pavements and other structures particularly in the south-western United States. This research addressed the problem of sulfate-induced heave in coal mine spoils, formed as a result of shallow strip coal mining, after treatment with calcium-based stabilizers. These spoils occur in areas of Indiana in which substantial infrastructure development is taking place and will continue to occur in the next 10-15 years. Samples of coal mine spoils were obtained from different sites in Indiana. While the majority of the samples exhibited sulfate …
