Background
Despite low incidence, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths and it has the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic malignancies among US women. The mortality rate would be reduced with an early detection marker. The folate receptor alpha (FRα) is one logical choice for a biomarker because of its prevalent overexpression in ovarian cancer and its exclusive expression in only a few normal tissues. In prior work, it was observed that patients with ovarian cancer had elevated serum levels of a protein that bound to a FRα-specific monoclonal antibody relative to healthy individuals. However, it …

Non-Gray Phonon Transport Using A Hybrid Bte-Fourier Solver, James Loy, Druv Singh, Jayathi Y. Murthy
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
Non-gray phonon transport solvers based on the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) are frequently employed to simulate sub-micron thermal transport. Typical solution procedures using sequential solution schemes encounter numerical difficulties because of the large spread in scattering rates. For frequency bands with very low Knudsen numbers, strong coupling between the directional BTEs results in slow convergence for sequential solution procedures. In this paper, we present a hybrid BTE-Fourier model which addresses this issue. By establishing a phonon group cutoff (say Kn=0.1), phonon bands with low Knudsen numbers are solved using a modified Fourier equation which includes a scattering term as well …
Modeling Of Subcontinuum Thermal Transport Across Semiconductor-Gas Interfaces, Druv Singh, Xiaohui Guo, Alina Alexeenko, Jayathi Y. Murthy, Timothy Fisher
Modeling Of Subcontinuum Thermal Transport Across Semiconductor-Gas Interfaces, Druv Singh, Xiaohui Guo, Alina Alexeenko, Jayathi Y. Murthy, Timothy Fisher
Birck and NCN Publications
A physically rigorous computational algorithm is developed and applied to calculate subcontinuum thermal transport in structures containing semiconductor-gas interfaces. The solution is based on a finite volume discretization of the Boltzmann equation for gas molecules (in the gas phase) and phonons (in the semiconductor). A partial equilibrium is assumed between gas molecules and phonons at the interface of the two media, and the degree of this equilibrium is determined by the accommodation coefficients of gas molecules and phonons on either side of the interface. Energy balance is imposed to obtain a value of the interface temperature. The classic problem of …

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Adhesion And Cytotoxicity During Epithelial Cell Stress Is Reduced By Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg, Kristen Burkholder, Arun K. Bhunia
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Background
Physiological stressors may alter susceptibility of the host intestinal epithelium to infection by enteric pathogens. In the current study, cytotoxic effect, adhesion and invasion of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) to Caco-2 cells exposed to thermal stress (41°C, 1 h) was investigated. Probiotic bacteria have been shown to reduce interaction of pathogens with the epithelium under non-stress conditions and may have a significant effect on epithelial viability during infection; however, probiotic effect on pathogen interaction with epithelial cells under physiological stress is not known. Therefore, we investigated the influence of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus gasseri …
Achieving Widespread, Democratic Education In The United States Today: Dewey’S Ideas Reconsidered, Elizabeth Meadows, Katherine Blatchford
Achieving Widespread, Democratic Education In The United States Today: Dewey’S Ideas Reconsidered, Elizabeth Meadows, Katherine Blatchford
Education and Culture
Excellent, democratic education that furthers each person’s potential, success and happiness for her own and others’ well-being is not yet widespread in the U.S. today. Dewey’s The Public and Its Problems has much to say about the possibilities and challenges of achieving this goal. This paper examines Dewey’s ideas about how a public for widespread, excellent education can form through the development of sound public opinion based on widely disseminated, accurate and relevant information and through the restructuring of associations among people. The crucial role of the educator in the formation of a public emerges through this examination.

“Fleshing Out Consensus”: Radical Pragmatism, Civil Rights, And The Algebra Project, Jessica Wahman
Education and Culture
It has been said that pragmatism’s “merely instrumental” truths fail to motivate radical change whereas absolute ideals make excellent guiding and driving forces for justice. However, in Radical Equations: Math Literacy and Civil Rights, Robert Moses speaks of the radical success of pragmatic principles, used in the Civil Rights Movement, that are continued today in the Algebra Project. This paper applies Dewey’s claims about education and community to Moses’s own arguments as a means of depicting the role that pragmatic ideals play in achieving radical social change.

Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo
Borat As Tragicomedy Of Anti Us-Americanism, Alexei Lalo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Alexei Lalo discusses in his article "Borat as Tragicomedy of Anti US-Americanism" the 2006 mockumentary in the context of stereotypes and clichés that exist about the United States and elsewhere, particularly in Europe. Anti US-Americanism is arguably at the core of this project, but Borat's creators seem to mock not only US-Americans, but also those who invent and practice clichés about the U.S. Lalo draws parallels between Sacha Baron Cohen's work and the legacies of Lenny Bruce and Charlie Chaplin (most notably his late film A King in New York). Of the numerous socio-cultural problems of the United States Borat …

Usability Research In The Writing Lab: Sustaining Discourse And Pedagogy, Michael J. Salvo, Jingfan Ren, Allen Brizee, Tammy S. Conard-Salvo
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Publications
Redesigning the online writing lab (OWL) presented the opportunity for collaboration among writing center and professional writing program members. While the article briefly describes the OWL redesign process, the argument focuses on collaboration and presents a model for sustainable intra-program collaboration. Following Hawhee, usability research is defined as “invention in the middle,” which offers a model for understanding research process as part of the infrastructure of new media instruction as described by DeVoss, Cushman, and Grabill. This article offers four stakeholder perspectives on the process of participatory technology design: of writing center administrators, graduate students, technical writing practitioners, and writing …

Literature, Ideology, And The Imaginary, Marcello Potocco
Literature, Ideology, And The Imaginary, Marcello Potocco
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper "Literature, Ideology and the Imaginary," Marcello Potocco analyses the elusive relation between literature and ideology. The notion of the "social imaginary" -- as developed by Castoriadis -- brings the possibility to reconsider the relation between the literary structure, its reception, and ideology. While ideology is seen as a radical expression of the social imaginary in modern society, it can only manifest itself through the ideological function, which does not necessarily destruct the aesthetic experience. In a literary structure, elements may exist that enable a strong identification with the extra-textual world, but this involves primarily identifications with significations …
