User-Needs Assessment Of The Research Cyberinfrastructure For The 21st Century, Lisa Johnston
User-Needs Assessment Of The Research Cyberinfrastructure For The 21st Century, Lisa Johnston
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
In support of the University of Minnesota’s goal to become one of the top three public research universities, the Research Cyberinfrastructure Alliance (RCA) was developed with the vision of facilitating access to state-of-the-art research computing systems and services, enhancing interdisciplinary research, and allowing researchers to explore radically new concepts, approaches, and tools. Founding members of the University’s RCA included individuals from college-level research computing units, the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, and key leaders from the University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), and the University Libraries.
A key step for the RCA was …

Survey Of Eresearch Practices And Skills At Qut, Australia, Stephanie Bradbury, Martin Borchert
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a multidisciplinary university in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and has 40,000 students and 1,700 researchers. Notable eResearch infrastructure includes the QUT ePrints repository, Microsoft QUT Research Centre, the OAK (Open Access to Knowledge) Law Project, Cambia and leading research institutes.
The Australian Government, via the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), is funding institutions to identify and describe their research datasets, to develop and populate data repositories and collaborative infrastructure, and to seed the Australian Research Data Commons. QUT is currently broadening its range of research support services, including those to support the management of research …
Data Mining, Data Fusion, And Libraries, Katherine Chiang
Data Mining, Data Fusion, And Libraries, Katherine Chiang
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
Our computerized world churns out data and their analysis is a challenge. Data mining and data fusion are two complementary approaches to processing dynamic, large and/or heterogeneous data. They are already used in various research disciplines and real‐world applications and that use will grow. This paper describes and defines these approaches using examples, and suggests possible services and applications by libraries. The focus is on eliciting the common information concepts that might be of interest, not on understanding the details of the computer/information science work, or the validity of the approach in solving a particular research or commercial problem.

Evaluating User Modality Preference Effect On Cognitive Load In A Multimedia, Justin V. Scott
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Meaningful learning is defined as a deep understanding of the material, which includes attending to important aspects of the presented material, mentally organizing it into a coherent cognitive structure, and integrating it with relevant existing knowledge (Mayer & Moreno, 2003). Mayer and Moreno (2003) defines multimedia learning as learning from words and pictures, and multimedia instruction as presenting words and pictures that are intended to foster learning. The emergence of numerous learning style models over the past 25 years has brought increasing attention to the idea that students learn in diverse ways and that one approach to teaching does not …

Exotoxins, including the hemolysins known as the alpha (α) and beta (β) toxins, play an important role in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus infections. A random transposon library was screened for S. aureus mutants exhibiting altered hemolysin expression compared to wild type. Transposon insertions in 72 genes resulting in increased or decreased hemolysin expression were identified. Mutations inactivating a putative cyclic di-GMP synthetase and a serine/threonine phosphatase (Stp1) were found to reduce hemolysin expression, and mutations in genes encoding a two component regulator PhoR, LysR family transcriptional regulator, purine biosynthetic enzymes and a serine/threonine kinase (Stk1) increased expression. Transcription of …
Performance Benefits For Organic Rankine Cycles With Flooded Expansion, Brandon J. Woodland, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll, William Travis Horton
Performance Benefits For Organic Rankine Cycles With Flooded Expansion, Brandon J. Woodland, James E. Braun, Eckhard A. Groll, William Travis Horton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
An organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is often used in waste heat recovery applications. These are typically small-scale applications where cycle thermal efficiency is low, and the benefits of traditional cycle enhancements (such as reheat stages or feed-water heaters) do not typically outweigh the costs required to implement them. An ORC with flooded expansion and internal heat regeneration is an alternative enhancement that provides comparable benefits at reduced cost and complexity.
The improvement in efficiency for the ORC with flooded expansion and internal regeneration is analyzed for several working fluids and for two flooding media: water and Zerol 60 compressor lubricant. …

Aesthetics, Nationalism, And The Image Of Woman In Modern Indian Art, Kedar Vishwanathan
Aesthetics, Nationalism, And The Image Of Woman In Modern Indian Art, Kedar Vishwanathan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Aesthetics, Nationalism, and the Image of Woman in Modern Indian Art" Kedar Vishwanathan discusses how developments in visual culture impacted India's configuration as nation. Between 1880-1945 in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) a burgeoning visual culture developed in service of anti-colonial nationalism. Used as a method to imagine a nation free of colonial rule, in particular images of women proliferated in private and public spaces. Crucial to this development was the reformulations of modernity based on an ambivalent combination of British and Indian vernacular art. Vishwanathan focuses on how the female was appropriated for the cause of …

New Modernity, Transnational Women, And Spanish Cinema, Maria Van Liew
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "New Modernity, Transnational Women, and Spanish Cinema" Maria Van Liew discusses aspects of migration to Spain in the context of histories of colonialism, racism, and sexism as represented in Spanish filmic narration. The flow of human traffic defies two aspects of European modernity: Non-linear time is reflected in the cycle of arrival/return/return as the nation relies on liminal subjects to determine its status as a progressive "First World" nation and in the effort to align representations of these cultural encounters accordingly, illusions of autochthonous national identity formations become dependent on practices of inclusion and, at times, cooptation …

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema" Vidhu Aggarwal discusses several contemporary films including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang de Basanti with focus on the figure of the revolutionary hero. The Bollywood film is a cultural form that combines several aesthetic styles, from within India and from the outside. With its formal heterogeneity and as a product of one of India's largest cities, Mumbai Bollywood has had an ongoing fascination with "arrival," that is, with India's status as a contemporary nation-state. While some Bollywood films seem to celebrate fantasy scenarios of India's arrival on the global scene, at …
