Evaluation Of Targeted Influenza Vaccination Strategies Via Population Modeling., John Glasser, Denis Taneri, Zhilan Julie Feng, Jen-Hsiang Chuang, Peet Tüll, William Thompson, Mary Mccauley, James Alexander
Department of Mathematics Faculty Publications
Background
Because they can generate comparable predictions, mathematical models are ideal tools for evaluating alternative drug or vaccine allocation strategies. To remain credible, however, results must be consistent. Authors of a recent assessment of possible influenza vaccination strategies conclude that older children, adolescents, and young adults are the optimal targets, no matter the objective, and argue for vaccinating them. Authors of two earlier studies concluded, respectively, that optimal targets depend on objectives and cautioned against changing policy. Which should we believe?

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been employed as a model organism to study human obesity due to the conservation of the pathways that regulate energy metabolism. To assay for fat storage in C. elegans, a number of fat-soluble dyes have been employed including BODIPY, Nile Red, Oil Red O, and Sudan Black. However, dye-labeled assays produce results that often do not correlate with fat stores in C. elegans. An alternative label-free approach to analyze fat storage in C. elegans has recently been described with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Here, we compare the performance of CARS microscopy …

Japanese Science Fiction And Conceptions Of The (Human) Subject, Maria Poulaki
Japanese Science Fiction And Conceptions Of The (Human) Subject, Maria Poulaki
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Japanese Science Fiction and Conceptions of the (Human) Subject" Maria Poulaki discusses the crisis that almost all essentialist categorizations have been facing in late modernity, in the context of which science fiction texts offer fertile ground to investigate the transitions brought about with the intensified invasion of the "human self" by its "nonhuman other." The analysis of a Japanese science fiction film draws a seemingly paradoxical connection between the Japanese version of modernity and self-identity with the relevant "Western" articulations found in the work of Bruno Latour and Alain Badiou. This connection points at a broader re-conceptualization …

A Consilient Science And Humanities In Mcewan's Enduring Love, Curtis D. Carbonell
A Consilient Science And Humanities In Mcewan's Enduring Love, Curtis D. Carbonell
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "A Consilient Science and the Humanities in McEwan's Enduring Love" Curtis D. Carbonell provides a reading of a Third Culture novel that foregrounds the relationship of the sciences and the humanities. In Ian McEwan's novel we see a perfect example of how literary thinkers are listening to the world of science and speaking to it in return. This article responds to Stephen Greenberg's ideas about how Neo-Darwinian themes in the novel point to social themes by arguing that what underlies both of these is a deeper structure: the tension between C.P. Snow's Two Cultures, which is only …

Authorship, Collaboration, And Art Geography, Martin De La Iglesia
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Authorship, Collaboration, and Art Geography" Martin de la Iglesia explores the connection between geographical spaces and works of art, a connection often made, but hardly theorized, by scholars in the field of art geography. He suggests that the link between space and object is established by the creator of the object. A feasible method is devised to determine the creator's geographical identity, which in turn determines which space is assigned to the object. Particularly, the implications of multiple authorship for such a methodology are considered. The procedure is exemplified by a geographical analysis of the comic book …

The Metaphysics Of Electronic Being, Michał Ostrowicki [Aka Sidey Myoo]
The Metaphysics Of Electronic Being, Michał Ostrowicki [Aka Sidey Myoo]
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Metaphysics of Electronic Being" Michał Ostrowicki discusses the electronic environment as a sphere of being. To this end, the notion of the "electronic sphere" is used as a subject of ontological analysis. Ostrowicki postulates that the problematics of the electronic sphere represents a part of ontology and designates it as "ontoelectronics." He makes a distinction made between an electronic image and an electronic being, thus indicating that they differ from each other in their existential status and thereby deny any metaphysical equivalence between the two. This distinction between an electronic image and an electronic being is …

Involvement Of Tip60 Acetyltransferase In Intracellular Salmonella Replication., Xueqin Wang, Dongju Li, Di Qu, Daoguo Zhou
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Salmonella enterica is a facultative intracellular pathogen that replicates within a membrane-bound compartment termed Salmonella containing vacuole (SCV). The biogenesis of SCV requiresSalmonella type III protein secretion/translocation system and their effector proteins which are translocated into host cells to exploit the vesicle trafficking pathways. SseF is one of these effectors required for SCV formation and Intracellular Salmonella replication through unknown mechanisms.
Results
In an attempt to identify host proteins that interact with SseF, we conduct a yeast two-hybrid screening of human cell cDNA library using SseF as the bait. We identified that TIP60, an acetyltransferase, interacts with SseF. …

Simulation Of Sub-Micron Thermal Transport In A Mosfet Using A, James Loy, Druv Singh, Jayathi Y. Murthy
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
Self-heating has emerged as a critical bottleneck to scaling in modern transistors. In simulating heat conduction in these devices, it is important to account for the granularity of phonon transport since electron-phonon scattering occurs preferentially to select phonon groups. However, a complete accounting for phonon dispersion, polarization and scattering is very expensive if the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) is used. Moreover, difficulties with convergence are encountered when the phonon Knudsen number becomes small. In this paper we simulate a two-dimensional bulk MOSFET hotspot problem using a partially-implicit hybrid BTE-Fourier solver which is significantly less expensive than a full BTE solution, …
Metric Signature Transitions In Optical Metamaterials, Igor Smolyaninov, Evgenii Narimanov
Metric Signature Transitions In Optical Metamaterials, Igor Smolyaninov, Evgenii Narimanov
Birck and NCN Publications
We demonstrate that the extraordinary waves in indefinite metamaterials experience an (- - + +) effective metric signature. During a metric signature change transition in such a metamaterial, a Minkowski space-time is created together with a large number of particles populating the space-time. Such metamaterial models provide a tabletop realization of metric signature change events suggested to occur in Bose-Einstein condensates and quantum gravity theories.
Evaluation Of Toxicity Analysis For Foundry Sand Specifications, M. Katherine Banks, A. Paul Schwab
Evaluation Of Toxicity Analysis For Foundry Sand Specifications, M. Katherine Banks, A. Paul Schwab
JTRP Technical Reports
Byproducts from many industries have the potential to be used as construction materials, but some means is required to determine if the material is environmentally benign. Foundry sands are produced in many states and can be useful as in transportation projects. However, INDOT currently requires the use of the MICROTOX test to assess the potential toxicity of the sands, and this requirement is viewed as an unnecessary impediment by the producers of foundry sands and is a requirement not encountered in other states. Therefore, the goal of this project was to review current requirements for testing of recycled materials, determine …

Microcantilever Dynamics In Liquid Environment Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy When Using Higher-Order Cantilever Eigenmodes, Daniel Kiracofe, Arvind Raman
Birck and NCN Publications
Dynamic atomic force microscopy is currently evolving from a single to a multifrequency instrument for nanoscale imaging often employing higher-order microcantilever eigenmodes for improved resolution and force spectroscopy. In this work the authors study the fundamentals of cantilever dynamics and energy dissipation when soft cantilevers are driven at their second flexural eigenmode and interact with samples in liquid environments. Contrary to the conventional first eigenmode operation, second eigenmode operation in liquids is often dominated by a subharmonic response (e.g., one tap every four drive cycles) and there is an energy transfer to the first eigenmode creating a new channel of …

User Interfaces For Simultaneous Group Collaboration Through Multi-Touch Devices, Frank Joseph Garofalo
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
Through a qualitative investigation using the phenomenological approach, this research study will explored the lived experience of individuals using a multi-touch interface and device for a group collaboration activity in a shared workspace. The research question was “what is the experience of users interacting simultaneously to complete a common task, with the display output of a multi-touch device?” Two rounds of user testing of approximately three participants for each respective round, performed a Six Sigma Affinity Diagram exercise using a multi-touch device. The exercise was a brainstorming component to the Six Sigma process in which qualitative data is sorted into …

Live Migration Of Parallel Applications, Raul Fabian Romero
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Romero, Raul F. M.S., Purdue University, August, 2010. Live Migration of Parallel Applications. Major Professor: Thomas J. Hacker.
It has been observed on engineering and scientific data centers that the absence of a clear separation between software and hardware can severely affect parallel applications. Applications that run across several nodes tend to be greatly affected because a single computational failure present in one of the nodes often leads the entire application to produce incorrect results or to even die. This low observed reliability requires a combination of a proactive and reactive solution in order to preserve the state of parallel …

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effect of microbial growth and biofilm formation on compressional waves, and complex conductivity during stimulated microbial growth. Over the 29 day duration of the experiment, compressional wave amplitudes and arrival times for the control (nonbiostimulated) sample were observed to be relatively uniform over the scanned 2-D region. However, the biostimulated sample exhibited a high degree of spatial variability in both the amplitude and arrival times, with portions of the sample exhibiting increased attenuation (similar to 80%) concurrent with an increase in the arrival times, while other portions exhibited decreased attenuation (similar to …
