An Integrated Thermal And Mechanical Investigation Of Molten-Salt Thermocline Energy Storage, S. Flueckiger, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Thermal ratcheting is a critical phenomenon associated with the cyclic operation of dual-medium thermocline tanks in solar energy applications. Although thermal ratcheting poses a serious impediment to thermocline operation, this failure mode in dual-medium thermocline tanks is not yet well understood. To study the potential for the occurrence of ratcheting, a comprehensive model of a thermocline tank that
includes both the heterogeneous filler region as well as the composite tank wall is formulated. The filler region consists of a rock bed with interstitial molten salt, while the tank wall is composed of a steel shell with two layers of insulation …

Evaporative Heat And Mass Transfer From The Free Surface Of A Liquid Wicked Into A Bed Of Spheres, Christopher P. Migliaccio, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Evaporation of ethanol from square packed arrays of 3.95 mm diameter copper spheres in a transparent, enclosed chamber is investigated. The enclosure ensures that relatively saturated vapor conditions exist near the free surface. The desired heat flux is imposed on the copper substrate upon which the copper spheres are mounted, and the liquid level in the bed is maintained by wicking from a continuous supply of liquid provided by a syringe pump. Transparent windows in the enclosure allow for visualization of the
evaporating liquid meniscus shape, which is recorded for different liquid feeding rates and heat fluxes. Experimentally measured meniscus …
Visual Learning Styles Among Digital Natives, Eric Palmer
Visual Learning Styles Among Digital Natives, Eric Palmer
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
This study explored the concept of digital nativity and its educational implications, including application of the learning styles hypothesis. The concept of digital natives, first put forth by Marc Prensky, introduced the notion that individuals raised in a technological environment have developed in such a way as to utilize information differently than the non-native generations before them. This study examined the possibility that these differences may include an increased efficiency in the utilization of narrative imagery versus textual information. The potential benefit of utilizing narrative imagery as an instructional tool is discussed. An experimental test application was developed for the …

Comparisons Between Educational Map Software Displaying Soil Data, Laura A. Kocur
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
The use of technology in the classroom is becoming more widespread, and the area of agronomy is no different. Utilization of various mapping technology is more common in instructional components in the classroom, although the impacts of software usability have not yet been explored. Maps available over the Internet are identified as an area in which usability is not known, nor are there any fixed standards or conventions to govern the display of them. The recently developed mapping prototype is intended to increase accessibility to map data used in class, as well as make it easier to use the data. …

The Implementation Of Web-Based Project Management Systems By The General Contractor: Transferring From Hard-Copy To Digital Format., Jason A. Miller
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
Abstract
The construction industry is undergoing a transition from being paper based to a digital one. This transition puts a document management challenge on all members of the construction team, but most specifically the general contractor which has to ensure that the appropriate information reaches the intended party in a usable format. The submittal process has historically been very paper intensive with multiple copies begin distributed to various parties. Transitioning to a digital format will decrease the amount of paper copies, but presents challenges to the general contractor. The first is the traditional method of noting documents will not be …
A Practice And Value Proposal For Doctoral Dissertation Data Curation, Aaron Collie, Michael Witt
A Practice And Value Proposal For Doctoral Dissertation Data Curation, Aaron Collie, Michael Witt
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
The preparation and publication of dissertations can be viewed as a subsystem of scholarly communication, and the treatment of data that support doctoral research can be mapped in a very controlled manner to the data curation lifecycle. Dissertation datasets represent “low-hanging fruit” for universities who are developing institutional data collections. The current workflow for processing electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) at a typical American university is presented, and a new practice is proposed that includes datasets in the process of formulating, awarding, and disseminating dissertations in a way that enables them to be linked and curated together. The value proposition …

Do Students Gather Information To Inform Design Decisions? Assessment With An Authentic Design Task In First-Year Engineering, Ruth Eh Wertz, Meagan Ross, Michael Fosmire, Monica Cardella, Senay Purzer
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Information gathering is a very important aspect of the design process, one that is used continuously throughout the project to make informed design decisions. This study reports the development of an authentic instrument used to assess skills related to information gathering in first-year engineering students. Existing assessment tools, such as the scenario-based Self- Knowledge Inventory of Lifelong Learning (SKILLS), developed by Conti & Fellenz, or the Self- Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS), developed by Guglielmino, were evaluated. While these have the advantage of being very easy to administer and analyze, one significant disadvantage is that they are self-reported and thus …

How Information Literacy Becomes Policy: An Analysis Using The Multiple Streams Framework, Sharon A. Weiner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
There is growing recognition that information literacy is a critical skill for educational and workplace success, engagement in lifelong learning, and civic participation. To be considered for allocations of financial and human resources, information literacy must become a policy priority for institutions and societies. There is no published examination of factors that may influence the adoption of information literacy as a policy priority. This article explores aspects of the policy process from a U.S. perspective that can favor or impede the inclusion of information literacy on political agendas. It examines these questions through the multiple streams framework of policy processes. …
Controlled Linear Perturbation, Elisha P. Sacks, Victor Milenkovic, Min-Ho Kyung
Controlled Linear Perturbation, Elisha P. Sacks, Victor Milenkovic, Min-Ho Kyung
Department of Computer Science Faculty Publications
We present an algorithmic solution to the robustness problem in computational geometry, called controlled linear perturbation, and demonstrate it on Minkowski sums of polyhedra. The robustness problem is how to implement real RAM algorithms accurately and efficiently using computer arithmetic. Approximate computation in floating point arithmetic is efficient but can assign incorrect signs to geometric predicates, which can cause combinatorial errors in the algorithm output. We make approximate computation accurate by performing small input perturbations, which we compute using differential calculus. This strategy supports fast, accurate Minkowski sum computation. The only prior robust implementation uses a less efficient algorithm, requires …

The Investment Model Of Commitment Processes, Caryl E. Rusbult, Christopher Agnew, Ximena Arriaga
The Investment Model Of Commitment Processes, Caryl E. Rusbult, Christopher Agnew, Ximena Arriaga
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
The investment model of commitment processes is rooted in interdependence theory and emerged from the broader scientific zeitgeist of the 1960s and 1970s that sought to understand seemingly irrational persistence in social behavior. The investment model was developed originally to move social psychology beyond focusing only on positive affect in predicting persistence in a close interpersonal relationship. As originally tested, the investment model holds that commitment to a target is influenced by three independent factors: satisfaction level, quality of alternatives, and investment size. Commitment, in turn, is posited to mediate the effects of these three bases of dependence on behavior, …

High Rates Of Photobiological H2 Production By A Cyanobacteriium Under Aerobic Conditions., Anindita Bandyopadhyay, Jana Stöckel, Louis A. Sherman, Himadri B. Pakrasi
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Among the emerging renewable and green energy sources, biohydrogen stands out as an appealing choice. Hydrogen can be produced by certain groups of microorganisms that possess functional nitrogenase and/or bidirectional hydrogenases. In particular, the potential of photobiological hydrogen production by oxygenic photosynthetic microbes has attracted significant interest. However, nitrogenase and hydrogenase are generally oxygen sensitive, and require protective mechanisms to function in an aerobic extracellular environment. Here, we describeCyanothece sp. ATCC 51142, a unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium with the capacity to generate high levels of hydrogen under aerobic conditions. Wild-type Cyanothece 51142 can produce hydrogen at rates as high as …

Spherical Nearest Neighbor Classification: Application To Hyperspectral Data, Dalton Lunga, Okan Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The problem of feature transformation arises in many fields of information processing, including machine learning, data compression, computer vision and geosciences applications. Here we discuss an approach that seeks a hyperspherical coordinate system preserving geodesic distances in the high dimensional hyperspectral data space. A lower dimensional hyperspherical manifold is computed using a lower rank matrix approximation algorithm combined with the recently proposed spherical embeddings method. Three spherical metrics for classification that exploits the nonlinear structure of hyperspectral imagery based on the properties of hyperspherical surfaces and their relationship with local tangent spaces are proposed. As part of experimental validation, results …
A Field Test Of Mobile Phone Shielding Devices, Eric Katz
A Field Test Of Mobile Phone Shielding Devices, Eric Katz
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Mobile phones are increasingly a source of evidence in criminal investigations. The evidence on a phone is volatile and can easily be overwritten or deleted. There are many tools that claim to radio isolate a phone in order to preserve evidence. Unfortunately the wireless preservation devices do not always successfully prevent network communication as promised. The purpose of this study was to identify situations where the devices used to protect evidence on mobile phones can fail. There has been little published research on how well these devices work in the field despite the escalating importance of mobile phone forensics. These …
Implementing Rfid Automation Into A Small Scale Aircraft Maintenance System, Daniel D. Bowman
Implementing Rfid Automation Into A Small Scale Aircraft Maintenance System, Daniel D. Bowman
Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore and identify where technology automation could be used to reduce time and wasted labor in aircraft inventory and maintenance processes. The research used passive RFID AutoID technology due to its capabilities in data logging and relatively hands-off, passive use. The Purdue University’s aircraft maintenance system operates under old time card systems with paper inspection, check outs of tools, and non-routine inspections, contributing to long search times when looking for maintenance problems or lost inventory that may have happened up to and over a year ago. Furthermore, there are general inefficiencies due to …
