(A)Wry Views: Anamorphosis, Cervantes, And The Early Picaresque, David R. Castillo
(A)Wry Views: Anamorphosis, Cervantes, And The Early Picaresque, David R. Castillo
Purdue University Press Books
The term anamorphosis, from the greek ana (again) and morphe (shape), designates a variety of perspective experiments that can be traced back to the artistic developments of the 1500's and 1600's. Anamorphic devices challenge viewers to experience different forms of perceptual oscillation and uncertainty. Images shift in front of the eyes of puzzled spectators as they move from the center of the representation to the margins, or from one side to the other. (A) Wry Views demonstrates that much of the literature of the Spanish Golden Age is susceptible, and indeed requires, oblique readings (as in anamorphosis).

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The scientist interviewed for this data curation profiles is conducting interdisciplinary research on movement and balance. Specifically, he is focusing on movement analysis of groups that include special populations (i.e., people with injury or disability) people with typical development (i.e., without injury). The data management needs center around the need for infrastructure to accommodate large quantities and types of data, including both raw data and reduced, abstracted data. The researcher also identified the importance of maintaining the data from special populations for five to ten years due to the cost of replacing the data.

Cyber Center Technical Reports
The promise of data-driven decision-making is now being recognized broadly, and there is growing enthusiasm for the notion of ``Big Data.’’ While the promise of Big Data is real -- for example, it is estimated that Google alone contributed 54 billion dollars to the US economy in 2009 -- there is currently a wide gap between its potential and its realization.
Heterogeneity, scale, timeliness, complexity, and privacy problems with Big Data impede progress at all phases of the pipeline that can create value from data. The problems start right away during data acquisition, when the data tsunami requires us to …

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …

Tradiciones Orales Y Literatura En El Siglo Xix Argentino: Los Casos Del Facundo Y El Criollismo, Ariel De La Fuente
Department of History Faculty Publications

Integrating Children’S Literature Into Occupational Learning About Engineers, Brianna L. Dorie, Monica Cardella
Integrating Children’S Literature Into Occupational Learning About Engineers, Brianna L. Dorie, Monica Cardella
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
At a very young age, a child has the ability to formulate ideas regarding the occupation of a lawyer, a nurse or even a doctor. However, studies have shown that most children have limited information regarding engineers, and the lack of knowledge can often perpetuate into adulthood(Cunningham et al., 2005; NAE, 2002). Augur et al. (2005) found that “occupational aspirations and expectations of children undergo dramatic development changes during the elementary years, as well as resisting change in other respects.” This means prior to school education, children have already formed their perception of occupations and that stereotypical attributes have already been …

A Microscale Model For Thin-Film Evaporation In Capillary Wick Structures, Ram Ranjan, Jayathi Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella
A Microscale Model For Thin-Film Evaporation In Capillary Wick Structures, Ram Ranjan, Jayathi Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
A numerical model is developed for the evaporating liquid meniscus in wick microstructures under saturated vapor conditions. Four different wick geometries representing common wicks used in heat pipes, viz., wire mesh, rectangular grooves, sintered wicks and vertical microwires, are modeled and compared for evaporative performance. The solid–liquid combination considered is copper–water. Steady evaporation is modeled and the liquid–vapor interface shape is assumed to be static during evaporation. Liquid–vapor interface shapes in different geometries are obtained by solving the Young–Laplace equation using Surface Evolver. Mass, momentum and energy equations are solved numerically in the liquid domain, with the vapor assumed to …

Design Of Integrated Nanostructured Wicks For High-Performance Vapor Chambers, Justin A. Weibel, S V. Garimella, Jayathi Y. Murthy, David H. Altman
CTRC Research Publications
The performance of passive phase-change cooling devices, such as vapor chambers or heat pipes, may be significantly enhanced by exploiting the superior thermal properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. The potential for large reductions in overall package resistance with the use of high-conductivity wick materials enhanced with CNT nanostructures is investigated. While such nanostructured wicks feature very small pore sizes that support high capillary pressures, it is shown that the high fluid flow resistance through these dense arrays prevents their use as the lone fluid transport mechanism. It is proposed that evaporator surfaces comprised of nanostructured wicks fed by interspersed …

Characterization Of The Heat Transfer Accompanying Electrowetting-Induced Droplet Motion, Niru Kumari, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Electrowetting (EW) involves the actuation of liquid droplets using electric fields and has been demon- strated as a powerful tool for initiating and controlling droplet-based microfluidic operations such as droplet transport, generation, splitting, merging and mixing. The heat transfer resulting from EW- induced droplet actuation has, however, remained largely unexplored owing to several challenges under- lying even simple thermal analyses and experiments. In the present work, the heat dissipation capacity of actuated droplets is quantified through detailed modeling and experimental efforts. The modeling involves three-dimensional transient numerical simulations of a droplet moving under the action of grav- ity or EW …

Assessment Of Nanostructured Capillary Wicks For Passive, Two-Phase Heat Transport, R. Ranjan, S V. Garimella, J. Y. Murthy, K. Yazawa
CTRC Research Publications
The major factors limiting the thermal performance of passive two-phase heat-spreading devices are the ability of the wick structures to transport liquid by means of capillary forces and the thermal resistance posed by the wicks. Nanoscale geometric enhancements to the wick structure, through the use of carbon nanotubes and metallic nanowires, promise to enhance the capillary transport while at the same time decreasing the thermal resistance due to their high intrinsic thermal conductivity. We analyze the performance of nanostructured wicks in heat-spreading applications. We report that the flow resistance of nanostructures constitutes a major barrier to their use as passive …

An Integrated Thermal And Mechanical Investigation Of Molten-Salt Thermocline Energy Storage, S. Flueckiger, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Thermal ratcheting is a critical phenomenon associated with the cyclic operation of dual-medium thermocline tanks in solar energy applications. Although thermal ratcheting poses a serious impediment to thermocline operation, this failure mode in dual-medium thermocline tanks is not yet well understood. To study the potential for the occurrence of ratcheting, a comprehensive model of a thermocline tank that
includes both the heterogeneous filler region as well as the composite tank wall is formulated. The filler region consists of a rock bed with interstitial molten salt, while the tank wall is composed of a steel shell with two layers of insulation …
