Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper examines the ways in which Thai undergraduate students in Chulalongkorn University find, evaluate, manage, and apply the needed information for doing their course-related assignments and everyday life research. The information literacy behaviour studied includes the undergraduates’ use of information resources, evaluation of information, research styles, and difficulties encountered during research practices. The survey instrument originally developed by Project Information Literacy of the University of Washington Information School was used as the basis for designing a questionnaire of this study. The questionnaire, then, was distributed to sophomores, juniors, and seniors enrolling at Chulalongkorn University. The sample for the student …

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li Jun 2012

Beyond Boolean, Towards Thinking: Discovery Systems And Information Literacy, Dianne Cmor, Xin Li

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

As discovery systems take the Library world by storm, there is a new opportunity for user-centred information literacy programs to emerge. As library search gets easier and varied platforms become unified, the focus of information literacy on search rules and platform choice and navigation will (finally) be able to truly give way to critical thinking and imaginative exploration. These are skills and aptitudes that are needed well beyond the academic environment – making them much more meaningful and useful for many of our users.

This paper will explore how the adoption of discovery systems might impact various user groups in …

Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle Jun 2012

Using Library Statistics To Inform, Promote, And Advocate Library Services For New Generation Users, Deborah Becker, Hillary Hartle

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper is based on a case study of how the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is actively using library statistics to promote and advocate for better library services for its users in a new digital environment.

At CPUT Libraries we realized that we need to promote our activities, determine our return on investment and show what value we add to the lives of our clients. This could be determined by the increase in the quality of work done and services used by the different user market segments. Four market segments have been identified namely, CPUT management, library staff, …

Virtualizing Library Processes And Interactions: A Content Analysis Of Library Facebook Profiles, Ming-Hsin Phoebe Chiu, Yi-Ying Lin

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In recent years, social networking sites have become mainstream in the cyberspace, and people interact and communicate in a virtual way. Institutions such as libraries and other non-profit organizations are jumping on the bandwagon of Web 2.0. Among related social networking services, Facebook is by far one of the most popular. Academic libraries embraced this new technology and used it as a flexible channel to communicate with faculty, staff, and students; however, little has been known about the nature of information shared and how it circulated. This study aimed to investigate how Facebook is used by academic libraries to communicate …

Redefining The Service Experience: Forging Collaboration Between Librarians And Students, Jenny Ellis, Andrea Phillips Jun 2012

Redefining The Service Experience: Forging Collaboration Between Librarians And Students, Jenny Ellis, Andrea Phillips

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In response to changing pedagogical theory and practice in higher education, library designers have created innovative learning spaces that support informal learning outside the classroom. Informed by social constructivist theory, libraries can be justly proud of their new collaborative learning spaces that support interaction and discussion; social spaces that foster engagement and learning; as well as quiet places for independent study. The University of Melbourne Library is no exception, carrying out a program of works since 2007 to create dynamic and innovative spaces to support contemporary student learning in four successive library refurbishment projects. Although much attention has been paid …

Social Media For International Students: It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey, Carolyn Mcdonald Jun 2012

Social Media For International Students: It's Not All About Facebook, Grace Saw, Wendy Abbott, Jessie Donaghey, Carolyn Mcdonald

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

According to the OECD there are nearly four million tertiary students enrolled in a course outside their country of citizenship. In 2010 there were 335 273 international students enrolled in higher education in Australia. To support these students during their study, libraries need to find ways to communicate and engage with them.

An Australian study found that international students’ preferred methods for learning about library services was through library webpages and personal contact with library staff. As more libraries experiment with social networking to inform and connect with students, we need to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for reaching …

Student Engagement And Library Use: An Examination Of Attitudes Towards Use Of Libraries And Information Amongst Undergraduate Students At A Turkish University Library, Gulcin Cribb, Ilkay Holt

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The competitive environment in which university libraries operate and provide their services and resources is one of the biggest challenges to engage today’s undergraduate students. There is a limited amount of high quality attention and time students have, to be able to be engaged with what the library offers them. Planning and designing library awareness and information literacy programs, particularly for new students, has presented itself as an on-going challenge for librarians worldwide in recent times. However, the goalpost keeps on moving and the players are becoming more restless, demanding and seeking instant gratification. The purpose of this paper is …

Marketing The Academic Library With Online Social Network Advertising, Christopher Chan Jun 2012

Marketing The Academic Library With Online Social Network Advertising, Christopher Chan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Facebook is now a ubiquitous part of the lives of many university students across the world. The libraries that serve them now have an opportunity to leverage this online social network to promote their services and resources. However, the effectiveness of a library’s efforts in this area will depend greatly on the number of connections it can make between its users and its Facebook presence. Building on a previous investigation that suggested online advertising might be a cost-effective way to achieve this goal, this paper investigates the relative effectiveness of several different approaches to Facebook advertising. To his end, the …

What Do We Do For Our Users? New Services For The Research And Learning Communities At A Research University, Wolfram Neubauer Jun 2012

What Do We Do For Our Users? New Services For The Research And Learning Communities At A Research University, Wolfram Neubauer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Till today the everyday work of science libraries is still based upon the traditional roles of acquiring, licencing, preparing and presenting all kinds of information for the purpose to support the interests and activities of the university library’s main user groups: the scientists and the students.

Since quite a few years this long-lasting relationship is changing and the reasons for this shifts are mainly induced by drastic changes in technology and the transformation of the science and learning environments.

This situation means for a research library that all activities, all developments according to the service and product portfolio have to …

William Morris And John Dewey: Imagining Utopian Education, John Freeman-Moir Jun 2012

William Morris And John Dewey: Imagining Utopian Education, John Freeman-Moir

Education and Culture

p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }

With strikingly resonance William Morris and John Dewey independently imagined what utopian education might plausibly be. Neither remotely thought of utopia as a perfectly ordered society, but rather as a process. Each understood education functionally in terms of how it fits with art, work, and democracy within a holistic conception of utopia. Their projections of utopian education envisage societies in which ends and means are integrated, and where useful productivity, pleasure and rest is the reasonable achievement of all. Starting out …

History And Politics In Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb, Shubh Brat Sarkar Jun 2012

History And Politics In Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb, Shubh Brat Sarkar

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "History and Politics in Parthasarathy's Play Aurangzeb" Shubh Brat Sarkar analyzes the use of history in a dramatic text, the underlying politics and ideology of a literary product, and the modes by which the materials are shaped through dramaturgy. The name Aurangzeb, the title of the play, has a strong presence in history textbooks and has perhaps become an integral part of a grand historical, "Indian" nationalist discourse. In the play multiple contradictions co-exist and find new projections in translations and theater adaptations in different historical contexts. Indira Parthasarthy's 1974 play is based on events leading …

The Amt1 Arginine Methyltransferase Gene Is Important For Plant Infection And Normal Hyphal Growth In Fusarium Graminearum, Guanghui Wang, Chenfang Wang, Rui Hou, Xiaoyin Zhou, Guotian Li, Shijie Zhang, Jin-Rong Xu

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Arginine methylation of non-histone proteins by protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) has been shown to be important for various biological processes from yeast to human. Although PRMT genes are well conserved in fungi, none of them have been functionally characterized in plant pathogenic ascomycetes. In this study, we identified and characterized all of the four predicted PRMT genes in Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of Fusarium head blight of wheat and barley. Whereas deletion of the other three PRMT genes had no obvious phenotypes, the Δamt1 mutant had pleiotropic defects. AMT1 is a predicted type I PRMT gene that …

Remote Associates Test And Alpha Brain Waves, Henk J. Haarmann, Timothy George, Alexei Smaliy, Joseph Dien May 2012

Remote Associates Test And Alpha Brain Waves, Henk J. Haarmann, Timothy George, Alexei Smaliy, Joseph Dien

The Journal of Problem Solving

Previous studies found that performance on the remote associates test (RAT) improves after a period of incubation and that increased alpha brain waves over the right posterior brain predict the emergence of RAT insight solutions. We report an experiment that tested whether increased alpha brain waves during incubation improve RAT performance. Participants received two blocks of RAT items (RAT1 and RAT2), with the second block consisting of items that were not solved during the first block. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups, which were matched for their number of RAT1 solutions. Participants in an alpha-up neurofeedback group aimed to …

The Effects Of Maternal Exercise During Pregnancy On The Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Function Of Offspring, Kerry A. Clifford May 2012

The Effects Of Maternal Exercise During Pregnancy On The Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Function Of Offspring, Kerry A. Clifford

College of Health and Human Sciences Honors Program Undergraduate Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. It has been well documented that exercise decreases the occurrence of cardiovascular events. Since the risk of cardiovascular disease development begins in the intrauterine environment, it is critical to assess the role of exercise in the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the developing offspring. Previous studies have linked increased disease susceptibility with decreased vascular function. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that maternal exercise during gestation does not have an effect on the vascular smooth muscle cell function of the offspring. Twenty primiparous crossbred gilts were …

Broadband Purcell Effect: Radiative Decay Engineering With Metamaterials, Zubin Jacob, Igor I. Smolyaninov, Evgenii E. Narimanov Apr 2012

Broadband Purcell Effect: Radiative Decay Engineering With Metamaterials, Zubin Jacob, Igor I. Smolyaninov, Evgenii E. Narimanov

Birck and NCN Publications

We show that metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion support a large number of electromagnetic states that can couple to quantum emitters leading to a broadband Purcell effect. The proposed approach of radiative decay engineering, useful for applications such as single photon sources, fluorescence imaging, biosensing, and single molecule detection, also opens up the possibility of using hyperbolic metamaterials to probe the spontaneous emission properties of atoms and artificial atoms such as quantum dots.
