Learning Resources Provision And Integration In An English Polytechnic, Don Revill
Learning Resources Provision And Integration In An English Polytechnic, Don Revill
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In order to meet the anticipated needs of higher education in the 1990's, Liverpool Polytechnic has had to rethink its learning services provision. The co-ordination and eventual integration of the three core services, educational development (covering educational technology and in-service faculty training), Computing and Library, has been debated.[1,2]
Serving Science And Industry From A National Library, David Russon
Serving Science And Industry From A National Library, David Russon
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
I should like to consider the ways in which special needs in the scientific and industrial communities are met by national libraries. What services are needed? What are provided? How are they changing?
The traditional view of a national library's role is that it should maintain and preserve the national archive and provide a bibliographic record of the nation's literary output. Traditionally, it should provide reference access to the national archive and, possibly, play a central role in the country's document supply network. There are, of course, an infinite number of variations on these themes and individual national circumstances dictate …

Gas Pulsations: A Shock Tube Mechanism, Paul Xiubao Huang
Gas Pulsations: A Shock Tube Mechanism, Paul Xiubao Huang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Gas pulsations are defined presently as a macro flow rate and/or pressure fluctuation with relatively low frequency and high amplitude. They commonly exist in HVACR, energy and other processing industries, and are widely accepted to be mainly caused by PD type gas machinery such as reciprocating or rotary compressors, expanders and Roots type blowers. Moreover, they are believed to be responsible for system vibrations, noises and fatigue failures. Naturally, as important a matter as gas pulsations, there have been tremendous R/D efforts from both academia and industry focused in this area, especially since the late 1980s. The most well known …
Rigid-Frame Porous Material Acoustic Attenuation On Compressor Discharge, Paulo Henrique Mareze, Arcanjo Lenzi, Claudio Pellegrini
Rigid-Frame Porous Material Acoustic Attenuation On Compressor Discharge, Paulo Henrique Mareze, Arcanjo Lenzi, Claudio Pellegrini
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Standards have limited the allowable noise levels in different situations, requiring the study of solutions at the source, in the path or the receiver. Muffler is the major factor influencing the noise of rotary compressor. Control and analyze the acoustic characteristics of muffler is essential. Porous materials have been studied and widely applied to reduce aircraft and vehicular noise or industrial problems in general. Generally, designers use absorbing materials available on the market, however they are not always adequate to the problem when there is the presence of another gas, for example in hermetic compressors. Thus it is proposed to …

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
ABSTRACT
There has been a growing concern over the enrollment by American students into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) fields of study. Following globalization there is a direct competition for jobs in the United States with lower-wage workers around the globe and the US, thereby, is on the verge of losing its global technological competitiveness (Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century: An Agenda for American Science and Technology, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, 2007). Governmental as well as non-profit organizations are constantly searching for ideas, programs and initiatives …

Who Teaches Information Literacy Competencies? Report Of A Study Of Faculty, Sharon A. Weiner
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Information literacy is recognized as an essential competency for educational success. It relates to all disciplines but is not a separate discipline, so it is not clear who takes responsibility for teaching this competency to undergraduates. This is a report of a survey conducted to better understand the extent to which teaching information literacy concepts by faculty occurred in a research university. The results indicated that faculty in the disciplines generally teach information literacy competencies to undergraduate students without collaborating with others on their campus. Many faculty also had the expectation that students know how to avoid plagiarism, find articles …
First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich
First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich
PPRI Digital Library
The United States government has adopted new approaches to counter violent extremist organizations around the world. “Soft security” and development programs include focused educational training for groups vulnerable to terrorist recruitment, norm messaging through local radio programming, and job creation in rural communities. This article evaluates the effectiveness of one set of these multi-vectored, community-level programs through analysis of data from 200 respondents in two similar, neighboring cities in northern Mali, Africa. The data show that residents in Timbuktu who were exposed to the programming for up to five years displayed measurably altered civic behavior and listening patterns in comparison …

Single-Molecule Tools Elucidate H2a.Z Nucleosome Composition, Jiji Chen, Andrew Miller, Ann L. Kirchmaier, Joseph M.K. Irudayaraj
Birck and NCN Publications
Although distinct epigenetic marks correlate with different chromatin states, how they are integrated within single nucleosomes to generate combinatorial signals remains largely unknown. We report the successful implementation of single molecule tools constituting fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), pulse interleave excitation-based Forster resonance energy transfer (PIE-FRET) and fluorescence lifetime imaging-based FRET (FLIM-FRET) to elucidate the composition of single nucleosomes containing histone variant H2A.Z (Htz1p in yeast) in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrate that yeast nucleosomes containing Htz1p are primarily composed of H4 K12ac and H3 K4me3 but not H3 K36me3 and that these patterns are conserved in mammalian cells. Quantification …

Hyperbolic Metamaterial Interfaces: Hawking Radiation From Rindler Horizons And Spacetime Signature Transitions, Igor I. Smolyaninov, Ehren R. Hwang, Evgenii Narimanov
Birck and NCN Publications
Extraordinary rays in a hyperbolic metamaterial behave as particle world lines in a three-dimensional (2 + 1) Minkowski spacetime. We analyze electromagnetic field behavior at the boundaries of this effective spacetime depending on the boundary orientation. If the boundary is perpendicular to the spacelike direction in the metamaterial, an effective Rindler horizon may be observed, which produces Hawking radiation. On the other hand, if the boundary is perpendicular to the timelike direction, the system undergoes a phase transition to a state with a different nature of the spacetime, with nonintegrable field divergence at the transformation point. Experimental observations of the …

Change As A Service: Challenges And Effects Of A New Paradigm For Library Systems And Content Infrastructure, Daniel Forsman
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The infrastructure for supplying information resources to higher education and research has gone through dramatic changes the last 15 years. The amount of electronic resources available and library systems that handle them have multiplied leaving libraries in a challenging situation. We are coping with a changing definition of library collections, changing business models for owning and accessing materials as well as a shift in the architecture of library systems.
The Library at Chalmers University of Technology spent close to 98% of the media budget in 2010 on electronic resources and has been spending more than 50% of the budget on …
Visualization For New Generation Users In The Age Of The Electronic Book, Peter Green
Visualization For New Generation Users In The Age Of The Electronic Book, Peter Green
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
People are visual and respond to images. This is well known and has been exploited for eons by those wishing to sell product and promote ideas. A picture paints a thousand words. Book publishers have taken advantage of the response to images by putting time and effort into book covers. These help to sell the book to the reader. While we may say 'don't judge a book by its cover' in fact we frequently do exactly that. Unfortunately the move to electronic and online in the last decade has diminished the library's ability to take advantage of the visual image …

Mendeley: Teaching Scholarly Communication And Collaboration Through Social Networking, Don Macmillan
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Teaching Mendeley achieves the impossible – it gets users excited to learn about organizing and citing their research articles. However, introducing Mendeley to students and faculty goes well beyond assisting them with organizing their references. Students are particularly apt to see the benefits that its social networking features offer, including promoting collaboration, identifying key resources, and facilitating group work. There are benefits for librarians too - the information it provides on the use of articles can contribute to collection development or research into patterns of information as well as promoting librarian expertise.
As a free citation manager, Mendeley consists of …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper will introduce our strategy to reach out to user groups other than students, the motivation behind, marketing, feedback and findings so far and our next steps.
Usually, information literacy programs focus primarily on students and their information needs. A survey among academic staff however showed knowledge gaps regarding important information resources and a fundamental need for research activities to be supported by information expertise. We also found that administrative staff of academic as well as non-academic departments have information needs of varied kinds. Since Bavaria’s curriculum for secondary education recognizes information skills as one of the key skills …

The Need To Read: An Unexpected Demand Of The New Generation At The Cape Peninsula University Of Technology (Cput), M E. Moll, A P. Coreejes-Brink, A L. Patrick
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The new generation of users is often typified as ‘digital natives’, and seen as being characterized by a technology-driven lifestyle with an emphasis on the use of technology. This has been seen to affect the behavior and needs of users. In particular, there has been a strong emphasis on the effect of the new generation’s demands for electronic access on the collection development practices of universities.
However, in the context of South African education a paradox has arisen. Many of the students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology come from a specific educational background, characterized by a poor reading …

Creating A Materials Samples Collection To Support The Engineering Curriculum, Dee Magnoni, Ananya Kejriwal, Charles Offenbacher
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Engineers fundamentally solve problems. Engineering students are obtaining the education necessary to develop problem-solving skills and tools. Olin College of Engineering was founded on the philosophy that a hands-on, entrepreneurial, design-centered engineering education would create engineers ready to solve current and emerging problems.
Olin’s library has embraced the college’s philosophy through the development of a realia, or learning objects collection that supports multiple intelligences. Moving beyond these learning objects, library staff wanted to build a collection of materials samples that enhance the engineering curriculum, and specifically design, sustainability and materials science courses. Students use the objects to make project decisions …

In their book Attention Economy: Understanding the New Currency of Business (Davenport and Beck, 2001) published in 2001, Professors Davenport and Beck focus on what they see as one of the most pressing concerns for the business world, the increasing difficulty in getting the attention of the consumer. At the beginning of the twenty-first century ‘capital, labor, information and knowledge are in plentiful supply…what’s in short supply is human attention’ (p.2). The reason for this ‘attention deficit’ (p.2) is a surfeit of information, such that humans, who have limitations in their ability to process information, have developed the skill of …

The European High Level Expert Group on Scientific data (2010) has formulated the challenges for a scientific infrastructure to be reached by 2030: “Our vision is a scientific e‐infrastructure that supports seamless access, use, re‐use, and trust of data. In a sense, the physical and technical infrastructure becomes invisible and the data themselves become the infrastructure – a valuable asset, on which science, technology, the economy and society can advance”.
Here, “data” is not restricted to primary data but also includes all non‐textual material (graphs, spectra, videos, 3D objects, etc.). The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) must …
