Early evaluation of new drug entities for their potential to cause mitochondrial dysfunction is becoming an important task for drug development. Multi-parametric high-content screening (mp-HCS) of mitochondrial toxicity holds promise as a lead in-vitro strategy for drug testing and safety evaluations. In this study, we have developed a mp-HCS and multi-parametric data analysis scheme for assessing cell responses to induced mitochondrial perturbation. The mp-HCS measurements are shown to be robust enough to allow for quantitative comparison of biological systems with different metabolic pathways simulated by alteration of growth media. Substitution of medium glucose for galactose sensitized cells to drug action …

Intelligent Shelter Allotment For Emergency Evacuation Planning: A Case Study Of Makkah, Kwangsoo Yang, Faizan Ur Rehman, Hatim Lahza, Saleh Basalamah, Shashi Shekhar, Arif Ghafoor
Cyber Center Technical Reports
Given maps of an evacuee population, shelter destinations and a transportation
network, the goal of intelligent shelter allotment (ISA) is to assign routes, exits and shelters to evacuees for quick and safe evacuation. ISA is societally important due to emergency planning and response applications in context of hazards such as floods, terrorism, fire, etc. ISA is challenging due to conflicts between movements of evacuee-groups heading to different shelters and transportation-network choke-points. State of the practice based on Nearest Exit or Shelter (NES) paradigm addresses the former challenge but not the latter one leading to load-imbalance and slow evacuation. Recent computational …

Managing Expectations And Obligations: The Librarian’S Role In Streaming Media For Online Education, Kathleen Carlisle Fountain
Managing Expectations And Obligations: The Librarian’S Role In Streaming Media For Online Education, Kathleen Carlisle Fountain
Charleston Library Conference
Educational films have been a standard feature of classroom instruction for decades, but the growth of online education is challenging how librarians can support the media needs of their faculty. Legacy physical collections exist on library shelves, but license and copyright restrictions may limit their use in online courses. Streaming collections are available in the marketplace but may not be affordable to license. Free or subscription media sources may be available but do not meet the needs of some instructors. This paper describes the comprehensive approach taken by library staff to manage streaming media demand on the Vancouver campus of …

You Ought To Be In Pictures: Bringing Streaming Video To Your Library, Cheri Duncan, Erika Peterson
Charleston Library Conference
Since 2003, James Madison University has been building a streaming video collection. Using vendor licensing and fair use guidelines, the University Libraries’ have added thousands of online videos via either purchased files or in-house digitization. Whether through media collections or title by title, the Libraries strive to provide faculty and students with access to the resources they require at the time and place they need it. The Libraries’ efforts in building and maintaining this collection from selection to licensing and from digitization to access over the last seven-eight years has presented numerous learning opportunities and eye-opening moments. Through their experience, …

Mainstreaming Media: Innovating Media Collections At The Ncsu Libraries, Darby Orcutt
Charleston Library Conference
The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) predicates its "Guidelines for Media Resources in Academic Libraries" on assumptions that general principles of collection management and library service apply equally to media formats (http://ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/standards/mediaresources.cfm). Yet, implicit in ACRL's Guidelines is the additional (and perhaps contradictory) assumption that, to be effective, academic library media collections and services must form a separately administered "program," headed by a single librarian. At The North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries, we have instead chosen to administer our many media collections and services using the same structures we use for those of other formats, interweaving media …

Getting To The Heart Of The Matter: What Faculty Tell Us About How Our Collections Support Student Learning, Marcia Thomas
Getting To The Heart Of The Matter: What Faculty Tell Us About How Our Collections Support Student Learning, Marcia Thomas
Charleston Library Conference
In 2010, librarians at IWU's The Ames Library embarked on a multi‐year collection review process. This is an evaluation and prioritization project for assessing and building our collection as a whole. Our purpose is to not only evaluate what we have now, but also identify what resources, in which formats, best support student learning. The centerpiece of the review is one‐on‐one interviews conducted by librarians with each full‐time faculty member in their liaison subject areas/departments. We asked faculty to reflect on how our collections (in all formats, including electronic) meet their pedagogical needs and support student research, as a way …
Patron‐Driven Acquisition Practices Of U.S. Research Libraries: East Vs. West, Jennifer Duncan, Jeff Carroll
Patron‐Driven Acquisition Practices Of U.S. Research Libraries: East Vs. West, Jennifer Duncan, Jeff Carroll
Charleston Library Conference
During the past few years, Patron Driven Acquisition, or PDA, has become the catchword at library conferences, increasingly promoted by some as the answer to shrinking budgets and the new normal for developing library collections. On one level, the debate over PDA is just an extension of the old question of just in time versus just in case collecting; however, technological developments have facilitated taking the just in time model toward the logical extreme as vendors have seen the rewards of implementing the immediate delivery of e‐books and profiled record sets directly to end users with only minimal library mediation. …
