Distributed Digital Forensics On Pre-Existing Internal Networks, Jeremiah Jens Nielsen Jan 2013

Distributed Digital Forensics On Pre-Existing Internal Networks, Jeremiah Jens Nielsen

Open Access Theses

Today's large datasets are a major hindrance on digital investigations and have led to a substantial backlog of media that must be examined. While this media sits idle, its relevant investigation must sit idle inducing investigative time lag. This study created a client/server application architecture that operated on an existing pool of internally networked Windows 7 machines. This distributed digital forensic approach helps to address scalability concerns with other approaches while also being financially feasible. Text search runtimes and match counts were evaluated using several scenarios including a 100 GB image with prefabricated data. When compared to FTK 4.1, a …

Text-Based Phishing Detection Using A Simulation Model, Gilchan Park Jan 2013

Text-Based Phishing Detection Using A Simulation Model, Gilchan Park

Open Access Theses

Phishing is one of the most potentially disruptive actions that can be performed on the Internet. Intellectual property and other pertinent business information could potentially be at risk if a user falls for a phishing attack. The most common way of carrying out a phishing attack is through email. The adversary sends an email with a link to a fraudulent site to lure consumers into divulging their confidential information. While such attacks may be easily identifiable for those well-versed in technology, it may be difficult for the typical Internet user to spot a fraudulent email.

The emphasis of this research …

Fate Of 17Α-Estradiol, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estrone In Agricultural Soils And Sediments, Michael L. Mashtare Jr Jan 2013

Fate Of 17Α-Estradiol, 17Β-Estradiol, And Estrone In Agricultural Soils And Sediments, Michael L. Mashtare Jr

Open Access Dissertations

The shift to concentrated animal production facilities and increasing rural-urban migration has increased the localized land application of nearly 1 billion tons of manure and biosolids annually. Although these applications provide nutrients and contribute to soil tilth, they also serve as a source for an estimated 49 tons of the natural manure-borne estrogens, 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), and estrone (E1). While these estrogens are critical to endocrine systems, the low concentrations observed in the environment can disrupt endocrine function in non-target organisms, e.g., altering secondary sex characteristics which can lead to changes in wildlife communities.

Research presented here focuses on …

PIBERG Publications

External representations (ERs) and their constituent symbolism are of enormous pedagogical value to instructors, especially in the teaching of the submicroscopic world of biology, inherent in disciplines such as biochemistry, immunochemistry, molecular biology and physiology. Whereas symbolic conventions are rigorously applied in physics and chemistry to enhance learning, this is not always true in biology where inappropriate use of symbolic language often leads to confusing ER designs and a range of conceptual, visual, and reasoning difficulties. In this chapter, we present a synthesis of research conducted by our group within these important areas of biology education. We commence by describing …

Evaporative Heat Transfer From An Electrowetted Liquid Ribbon On A Heated Substrate, Chris P. Migliaccio, S V. Garimella Jan 2013

Evaporative Heat Transfer From An Electrowetted Liquid Ribbon On A Heated Substrate, Chris P. Migliaccio, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Evaporation of narrow water ribbons (of 5 and 7 lL volume) formed on a heated surface is investigated. Chemical and structural patterning of a silicon substrate is employed to fabricate a hydrophilic stripe that bisects hydrophobic pillar arrays of varied geometric roughness. Electrical heating of a 100 nm titanium layer on the back side of the device provides a constant heat flux. In the absence of electrical actuation, water introduced onto the substrate takes a bulging ribbon shape that is constrained to the immediate vicinity of the hydrophilic stripe. Electrowetting of the water ribbon spreads it into the hydrophobic pillar …

Cyclic Operation Of Molten-Salt Thermal Energy Storage In Thermoclines For Solar Power Plants, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

The cyclic operation of molten-salt thermal energy storage thermoclines for solar thermal power plants is systematically investigated. A comprehensive, two-temperature model is first developed for the cyclic operation of a thermocline operating with a commercially available molten salt as the heat transfer fluid and quartzite rock as the filler. Volume-averaged mass and momentum equations are employed, with the Brinkman–Forchheimer extension to the Darcy law used to model the porous-medium resistance. Energy equations for the molten salt and the filler are coupled by an interstitial Nusselt number representing the heat transfer between the phases. A finite-volume approach is employed to solve …

Phase change cooling schemes involving passive heat spreading devices, such as heat pipes and vapor chambers, are widely adopted for thermal management of high heat-flux technologies. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are fabricated on a 200 micrometer thick sintered copper powder wick layer using microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. A physical vapor deposition process is used to coat the CNTs with a varying thickness of copper to promote surface wetting with the working fluid, water. Thermal performance of the bare sintered copper powder sample (without CNTs) and the copperfunctionalized CNT-coated sintered copper powder wick samples is compared …

Review Of Molten-Salt Thermocline Tank Modeling For Solar Thermal Energy Storage, S. M. Flueckiger, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella Jan 2013

Review Of Molten-Salt Thermocline Tank Modeling For Solar Thermal Energy Storage, S. M. Flueckiger, Z. Yang, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Molten-salt thermocline tanks are a low-cost option for thermal energy storage in concentrating solar power systems. A review of previous experimental and numerical thermocline tank studies is performed to identify key issues associated with tank design and performance. Published models have shown that tank discharge performance improves with both larger tank height and smaller internal filler diameter due to increased thermal stratification and sustained outflow of molten salt with high thermal quality. For well-insulated (adiabatic) tanks, low molten-salt flow rates reduce the axial extent of the heat-exchange region and increase discharge efficiency. Under nonadiabatic conditions, low flow rates become detrimental …

Evaporation Analysis Of Sintered Wick Microstructures, K. K. Bodla, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Heat pipes offer passive transport of heat over long distances without incurring a significant drop in temperature. Topological and microstructural details of the wick material embedded in a heat pipe help determine its thermal performance. A good understanding of pore-scale transport phenomena is crucial to enhancing heat pipe performance. In this study, pore-scale analysis of thin-film evaporation through sintered copper wicks is performed. X-ray microtomography is employed to generate geometrically faithful, feature-preserving meshes. Commercial sintered wicks with particle sizes in the range of 45–60 lm, 106–150 lm and 250–355 lm and with approximately 61% porosity are considered. The capillary pressure, …

Advances In Fluid And Thermal Transport Property Analysis And Design Of Sintered Porous Wick Microstructures, K. K. Bodla, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Sintered porous structures are ubiquitous as heat transport media for thermal management and other applications. In particular, low-porosity sintered packed beds are used as capillary-wicking and evaporation-enhancement structures in heat pipes. Accurate prediction and analysis of their transport characteristics for different microstructure geometries is important for improved design. Owing to the random nature and geometric complexity of these materials, development of predictive methods has been the subject of extensive prior research. The present work summarizes and builds upon past studies and recent advances in pore-scale modeling of fluid and thermal transport within such heterogeneous media. A brief review of various …

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

An EST sequence, designated JnRAP2-like, was isolated from tissue at the heartwood/sapwood transition zone (TZ) in black walnut (Juglans nigra L). The deduced amino acid sequence of JnRAP2-like protein consists of a single AP2-containing domain with significant similarity to conserved AP2/ERF DNA-binding domains in other species. Based on multiple sequence alignment, JnRAP2-like appears to be an ortholog of RAP2.6L (At5g13330), which encodes an ethylene response element binding protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Real-time PCR revealed that the JnRAP2-like was expressed most abundantly in TZ of trees harvested in fall when compared with other xylem tissues harvested in the …
