The purpose of the present study was to assess the preparedness of the veterinary profession to communicate with limited English proficient Spanish-speaking pet owners (LEP SSPOs). Results of surveys with 393 Latino pet owners, 383 small animal veterinarians and staff, and over 2000 veterinary students indicate that interaction between veterinary professionals and LEP SSPOs is not a rare occurrence: Veterinarians in states with large established or fast-growing Latino communities are seeing LEP SSPOs and their pets on a regular basis: 89% of veterinarians have LEP Spanish-speaking clients, over half of these practitioners are seeing LEP SSPOs weekly, and over half …

Generation And Statistical Modeling Of Active Protein Chimeras: A Sequence Based Approach, Nicholas Fico Oct 2013

Generation And Statistical Modeling Of Active Protein Chimeras: A Sequence Based Approach, Nicholas Fico

Open Access Dissertations

Generation of active protein chimeras is a valuable tool to probe the functional space of proteins. Statistical modeling is the next logical step, allowing us to build a model of gene fragment replaceability between species. In this thesis I begin to develop the statistical tools that are needed to systematically describe combinatorial protein libraries. I present three sets of diverse chimeric protein libraries developed using sequence information. The statistical model of the human N-Ras and human K-Ras-4B genes reveal a set previously unidetifed surface residues on the N-Ras G-Domain that may be involved in cellular localization. Statistical modeling of a …

Hybrid And Smart Topologically Interlocking Materials, Somesh Khandelwal Oct 2013

Hybrid And Smart Topologically Interlocking Materials, Somesh Khandelwal

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis explores the mechanical properties of a new class of multifunctional architectured materials, Topologically Interlocking Materials (TIMs). These materials are created as an assembly of unit elements arranged in an interlocking pattern such that the load transfer between unit elements occurs by contact only. In the absence of adhesive interaction, the tensile component of the load is carried by complementary tensile elements in the form of external constraints or integrated filaments. By virtue of the bottom up design used in creating these materials, their mechanical properties are influenced by a number of controllable parameters including shape, confinement force, scale, …

Multiscale Simulation Of Thermocline Energy Storage For Concentrating Solar Power, Scott Michael Flueckiger Oct 2013

Multiscale Simulation Of Thermocline Energy Storage For Concentrating Solar Power, Scott Michael Flueckiger

Open Access Dissertations

Concentrating solar power (CSP) is a renewable and demonstrated technology for large-scale power generation but requires multiple engineering advancements to achieve grid parity with conventional fossil fuels. Part of this advancement includes novel and inexpensive thermal energy systems to decouple daily power production from intermittent solar collection. Dual-media thermocline tanks, composed of molten salt and solid rock filler, offer low-cost storage capability but the concept has experienced limited deployment in CSP plants due to unresolved concerns about long-term thermal and structural stability. The main objective of the present work is to advance the understanding of thermocline storage design and operation …

Efficient Spectral-Element Methods For Acoustic Scattering And Related Problems, Ying He Oct 2013

Efficient Spectral-Element Methods For Acoustic Scattering And Related Problems, Ying He

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the development of high-order numerical methods for acoustic and electromagnetic scattering problems, and nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problems.

For the scattering problems, two cases are considered: 1) the scattering from a doubly layered periodic structure; and 2) the scattering from doubly layered, unbounded rough surface. For both cases, we first apply the transformed field expansion (TFE) method to reduce the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with complex scattering surface into a successive sequence of the transmission problems with a plane interface. Then, we use Fourier-Spectral method in the periodic structure problem and Hermite-Spectral method in the unbounded rough surface …

The Application And Analysis Of Automated Triangulation Of Video Imagery By Successive Relative Orientation, Jae Sung Kim Oct 2013

The Application And Analysis Of Automated Triangulation Of Video Imagery By Successive Relative Orientation, Jae Sung Kim

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is the analysis and evaluation of methods to orient a strip of images using an automated approach. Automatic orientation of strips of video frame imagery would facilitate the construction of three dimensional models with less demand on a human operator for tedious measurement. Often one has no control points, so only relative orientation is possible. The relative orientation process gives camera parameters such as attitudes and selected baseline components and it can be implemented by using either collinearity or coplanarity equations. To automate the point selection, the pass and/or tie points were detected by the …

Using X-Ray Imaging Techniques To Determine Density Of Foods, Shivangi Mohan Kelkar Oct 2013

Using X-Ray Imaging Techniques To Determine Density Of Foods, Shivangi Mohan Kelkar

Open Access Dissertations

Density depends on the experimental technique and structural properties of food. True, apparent and bulk are different types of densities. For porous foods such as baked food products and complex food systems, accurate measurement of density is challenging. Empirical correlations dependent on composition and temperature exist to calculate true density. Thus if composition and apparent density are known, porosity can be calculated, porosity = [1 - (apparent density/ true density)]. Various non-destructive diagnostic tools have been employed to study food microstructure. Among these, computed tomography (CT) and digital radiography (DR) utilizing x-ray imaging showed greater capability for evaluation of food …

Peridynamic Modeling Of Coupled Mechanical Deformations And Transient Flow In Unsaturated Soils, Rami Jabakhanji Oct 2013

Peridynamic Modeling Of Coupled Mechanical Deformations And Transient Flow In Unsaturated Soils, Rami Jabakhanji

Open Access Dissertations

A coupled peridynamic model for mechanical deformations and transient moisture flow in unsaturated soils is developed. The model is capable of simulating the emergence and evolution of cracks triggered by volumetric strains in the soil which are associated with changes in moisture content. The development of our model is motivated by the need for a tool to analyze and evaluate the impact of dessication cracks on the movement of moisture and the mechanical properties of soils at the field scale. The model is based on the peridynamic reformulation of elasticity proposed by Silling for simulating the deformation of bodies with …

Developing A Drug Delivery System For Treatment Of Vocal Fold Scarring, Aaron Michael Kosinski Oct 2013

Developing A Drug Delivery System For Treatment Of Vocal Fold Scarring, Aaron Michael Kosinski

Open Access Dissertations

Vocal fold scarring is an affliction that results in the formation of a disorganized and stiff extracellular matrix (ECM) with abnormal ECM component densities & structures including a significant increase in collagen deposition. It is caused by improper healing post injury and results in profound changes in the biomechanical properties of the vocal folds impairing their ability to generate a normal mucosal wave during phonation.

Finding an effective treatment for vocal fold scarring has been elusive. Currently, treatments seek temporary solutions that correct glottal incompetence and reduce stiffness caused by the scar through the augmentation of the vocal folds using …

Fluorous- Phase Synthesis Of Heparan Sulfate Disaccharides & Low-Molecular Weight Additives For Enhancing The Performance Of Lithium-Ion Batteries., Matthew Daniel Casselman

Open Access Dissertations

Heparan sulfate is a complex cell-surface proteoglycan that serves many important roles in biology, such as growth and development, immune response and pathogenesis. Heparan sulfate is structurally heterogeneous due to the variable post- glycosylation modifications, particularly the generation of diverse sets of sulfate esters (sulfoforms) for any given disaccharide unit. In order to establish useful relationships between heparan sulfate structure and biological activity, a set of well-defined sulfoforms is necessary to support binding affinity screening. In this thesis, we describe the generation of diverse sulfoforms from heparan disaccharides using a fluorous tag to facilitate purification of highly charged intermediates, and …

Measuring And Modeling The Response Characteristics Of The Environmental Phosphate Transducer In Escherichia Coli, Chetan Sood Oct 2013

Measuring And Modeling The Response Characteristics Of The Environmental Phosphate Transducer In Escherichia Coli, Chetan Sood

Open Access Dissertations

The PhoR/PhoB two-component system in Escherichia coli is a biological transducer that senses the limitation of environmental inorganic orthophosphate, the bacteria's preferred source of the essential nutrient phosphate, and transmits that information to the interior of the cell initiating a response that mitigates phosphate starvation. In the first part of this study, we present and apply a fluorescence microscopy technique to measure, in vivo, the dynamic response characteristics of the transducer with single-cell resolution. We report that the transience in the PhoR/PhoB TCS response is consistent with the transducer having a threshold sensitivity to the concentration of environmental phosphate, …

The mosquito-borne alphavirus, chikungunya virus (CHIKV), has recently reemerged, producing the largest epidemic ever recorded for this virus, with up to 6.5 million cases of acute and chronic rheumatic disease. There are currently no licensed vaccines for CHIKV and current anti-inflammatory drug treatment is often inadequate. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of two human monoclonal antibodies, C9 and E8, from CHIKV infected and recovered individuals. C9 was determined to be a potent virus neutralizing antibody and a biosensor antibody binding study demonstrated it recognized residues on intact CHIKV VLPs. Shotgun mutagenesis alanine scanning of 98 percent of the …

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert Sep 2013

Perspectives On Literary Reading And Book Culture, Geert Vandermeersche, Ronald Soetaert

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Perspectives on Literary Reading and Book Culture" Geert Vandermeersche and Ronald Soetaert provide a narrative framework for analyzing literary scholars' argumentation in the debate on literature and the humanities. Starting from MacIntyre's narrative description of epistemic "crises" they analyze the stories authors construct and the positions they take and ascribe to others within larger developing (grand) narratives on the value and function of literary reading. Both traditional narratives and new alternative (i.e., enlarged) narratives are discussed in how they set up and frame the argument and how they create dichotomies.

Reading, Literacy, And Education, Mikko Lehtonen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Reading, Literacy, and Education" Mikko Lehtonen outlines a contextual approach to literacy. He asks how the changing relations of culture and economy, transformation of nation states and national cultures and changing notions concerning affect and cognition, transform notions of literacy and reading. Relying on the results of a recent Finnish research project on new reading communities and new ways of reading, Lehtonen highlights substantial continuities in the reading habits of the so called Google generation when compared to other generations of readers. Print media is not, however, connected self-evidently to cognitive reading among the said generation. Lehtonen …

“Seeing, Seeing, Seeing”: Deafness, Knowledge, And Subjectivity In Elizabeth Bowen, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

In What is Posthumanism, Cary Wolfe enlists Temple Grandin’s account of her autism to critique reductive ideas of subjectivity. He quotes Oliver Sacks’s comment that Grandin’s first book was “unthinkable because it had been medical dogma for forty years or more that there was no ‘inside,’ no inner life, in the autistic, or that if there was it would be forever denied access or expression” (129). As Wolfe sees it, that dogma is founded in no small part on the too-rapid assimilation of the questions of subjectivity, consciousness, and cognition to the question of language ability—a dogma that is perhaps …
