Flow Measurements In A Blood-Perfused Collagen Vessel Using X-Ray Micro-Particle Image Velocimetry., Elizabeth Antoine, Cara Buchanan, Kamel Fezzaa, Wah-Keat Lee, Nichole Rylander, Pavlos Vlachos

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Blood-perfused tissue models are joining the emerging field of tumor engineering because they provide new avenues for modulation of the tumor microenvironment and preclinical evaluation of the therapeutic potential of new treatments. The characterization of fluid flow parameters in such in-vitro perfused tissue models is a critical step towards better understanding and manipulating the tumor microenvironment. However, traditional optical flow measurement methods are inapplicable because of the opacity of blood and the thickness of the tissue sample. In order to overcome the limitations of optical method we demonstrate the feasibility of using phase-contrast x-ray imaging to perform microscale particle image …

Essential Role Of The Plasmid Hik31 Operon In Regulating Central Metabolism In The Dark In Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803., Sowmya Nagarajan, Sanvesh Srivastava, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The plasmid hik31 operon (P3, slr6039-slr6041) is located on the pSYSX plasmid in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. A P3 mutant (ΔP3) had a growth defect in the dark and a pigment defect that was worsened by the addition of glucose. The glucose defect was from incomplete metabolism of the substrate, was pH dependent, and completely overcome by the addition of bicarbonate. Addition of organic carbon and nitrogen sources partly alleviated the defects of the mutant in the dark. Electron micrographs of the mutant revealed larger cells with division defects, glycogen limitation, lack of carboxysomes, deteriorated thylakoids and accumulation …

Reframing Italy: New Trends In Italian Women's Filmmaking, Bernadette Luciano Nov 2013

Reframing Italy: New Trends In Italian Women's Filmmaking, Bernadette Luciano

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

In recent years, Italian cinema has experienced a quiet revolution: the proliferation of films by women. But their thought-provoking work has not yet received the attention it deserves. Reframing Italy fills this gap. The book introduces readers to films and documentaries by recognized women directors such as Cristina Comencini, Wilma Labate, Alina Marazzi, Antonietta De Lillo, Marina Spada, and Francesca Comencini, as well as to filmmakers whose work has so far been undeservedly ignored. Through a thematically based analysis supported by case studies, Luciano and Scarparo argue that Italian women filmmakers, while not overtly feminist, are producing work that increasingly …

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste Nov 2013

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

An EST sequence, designated JnRAP2-like, was isolated from tissue at the heartwood/sapwood transition zone (TZ) in black walnut (Juglans nigra L). The deduced amino acid sequence of JnRAP2-like protein consists of a single AP2-containing domain with significant similarity to conserved AP2/ERF DNA-binding domains in other species. Based on multiple sequence alignment, JnRAP2-like appears to be an ortholog of RAP2.6L (At5g13330), which encodes an ethylene response element binding protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Real-time PCR revealed that the JnRAP2-like was expressed most abundantly in TZ of trees harvested in fall when compared with other xylem tissues harvested in the …

Incorporating Usability Into The Database Review Process: New Lessons And Possibilities, Ilana R. Barnes Nov 2013

Incorporating Usability Into The Database Review Process: New Lessons And Possibilities, Ilana R. Barnes

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. In the summer of 2013, Purdue libraries introduced a modified standard usability concept (heuristic evaluation, or expert review) into an existing yearly electronic resource evaluation process. Every year librarians already evaluated electronic resources in the collection using a set of parameters including usage statistics but never explicitly included database usability. Introducing more user experience parameters into process allows librarians to record usability errors to be communicated back to database vendors or to be considered for database renewal and …

Rheological Investigation Of The Shear Strength, Durability, And Recovery Of Alginate Rafts Formed By Antacid Medication In Varying Ph Environments, Brooke M. Elliott, Kathleen E. Steckbeck, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk Nov 2013

Rheological Investigation Of The Shear Strength, Durability, And Recovery Of Alginate Rafts Formed By Antacid Medication In Varying Ph Environments, Brooke M. Elliott, Kathleen E. Steckbeck, Lisa R. Murray, Kendra Erk

School of Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The mechanical response of alginate rafts formed by mixing liquid alginate antacid medication (Gaviscon® Extra Strength Liquid Antacid) with acidic solutions was investigated by deforming isolated rafts in a shear rheometer. As rafts were deformed to varying magnitudes of applied strain, rheological parameters were identified and related to the overall strength, durability, and recoverability of rafts formed at different pH (1.1 – 1.7) and aging conditions (0.5 – 4 hr). Rafts formed in the lowest acidity solutions (pH 1.4, 1.7) were elastically weak (G0’ = 60, 42 Pa for un-aged raft) yet maintained their elasticity during applied …

Analysis Of Carbohydrate Storage Granules In The Diazotrophic Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Sp. Pcc 7822., David G. Welkie, Debby Sherman, William B. Chrisler, Galya Orr, Louis A. Sherman Nov 2013

Analysis Of Carbohydrate Storage Granules In The Diazotrophic Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Sp. Pcc 7822., David G. Welkie, Debby Sherman, William B. Chrisler, Galya Orr, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The unicellular diazotrophic cyanobacteria of the genus Cyanothece demonstrate oscillations in nitrogenase activity and H2 production when grown under 12 h light–12 h dark cycles. We established that Cyanothece sp. PCC 7822 allows for the construction of knock-out mutants and our objective was to improve the growth characteristics of this strain and to identify the nature of the intracellular storage granules. We report the physiological and morphological effects of reduction in nitrate and phosphate concentrations in BG-11 media on this strain. We developed a series of BG-11-derived growth media and monitored batch culture growth, nitrogenase activity and nitrogenase-mediated hydrogen production, …
