Higher Order Thinking In Design Reviews, Craig D. Howard, Colin M. Gray Jan 2014

Higher Order Thinking In Design Reviews, Craig D. Howard, Colin M. Gray

Design Thinking Research Symposium

In this study we have grappled with how higher order thinking emerges in early stage design reviews, using an undergraduate dyadic review and a graduate review in a small group setting. Narratives, gambits and justifications emerged through a content analysis as forms of higher order thinking common in the reviews. We then mapped these reviews onto common frames of reference employed by teachers and students. Results depicted stark differences in the linguistic routines of the two teachers and two different sets of students. Each focused their higher order thinking from a primarily different frame of reference. Conclusions relate to opportunistic …

Exploring The Role Of Empathy In A Service-Learning Design Project, Nicholas D. Fila, Justin L. Hess Jan 2014

Exploring The Role Of Empathy In A Service-Learning Design Project, Nicholas D. Fila, Justin L. Hess

Design Thinking Research Symposium

The emergence of empathic design has inspired growing discourse on the role of empathy within design. While research on empathic design acknowledges the presence of empathy in design practice, little attention has been paid to its underlying mechanisms and how these mechanisms operate within the designer’s mind throughout the design process. In this study, we used the service-learning data set to develop an emergent empathic design model. We collected and analyzed any instances in which designers evidenced empathy for the end users. We kept empathy loosely defined due to the exploratory intent of this study and the recognition that empathy …

Adaptive Mechanical Properties Of Topologically Interlocking Material Systems, S Khandelwal, Thomas Siegmund, R J. Cipra, J S. Bolton Jan 2014

Adaptive Mechanical Properties Of Topologically Interlocking Material Systems, S Khandelwal, Thomas Siegmund, R J. Cipra, J S. Bolton

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Topologically interlocked material systems are two-dimensional granular crystals created as ordered and adhesion-less assemblies of unit elements of the shape of platonic solids. The assembly resists transverse forces due to the interlocking geometric arrangement of the unit elements. Topologically interlocked material systems yet require an external constraint to provide resistance under the action of external load. Past work considered fixed and passive constraints only. The objective of the present study is to consider active and adaptive external constraints with the goal to achieve variable stiffness and energy absorption characteristics of the topologically interlocked material system through an active control of …

Thermodynamic Assessment Of High-Temperature Heat Pumps For Heat Recovery, Chieko Kondou, Shigeru Koyama Jan 2014

Thermodynamic Assessment Of High-Temperature Heat Pumps For Heat Recovery, Chieko Kondou, Shigeru Koyama

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

To reduce energy consumption utilizing heat recovery systems is increasingly important in industry. The screening of refrigerants and primary energy efficiency are mainly discussed with a case study for high-temperature heat pump cycles in this study. The overall coefficients of performance of four different cycle configurations to increase temperature of compressed water up to 160 oC using waste heat of 80 oC are calculated and thermodynamically compared for selected refrigerants, R717, R365mfc, R1234ze(E), and R1234ze(Z). The calculation results suggest that a multiple stage cycle drastically reduces throttling loss in expansion valve and exergy loss in condensers, and consequently achieves the …

Comparing Cop Optimization With Maximizing The Coefficient Of System Performance For Refrigeration Systems In Supermarkets, Martin R. Braun, Stephen B. M. Beck, Ha?Im Altan Jan 2014

Comparing Cop Optimization With Maximizing The Coefficient Of System Performance For Refrigeration Systems In Supermarkets, Martin R. Braun, Stephen B. M. Beck, Ha?Im Altan

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

In recent years the energy usage of supermarkets, in particular that of their refrigeration systems, has been investigated using a variety of approaches, such as floating pressure set points and integrating the heating and refrigeration systems. Something which has not yet attracted much attention is the energy consumption of the dry condenser fans in refrigeration systems. This is surprising as it has been shown for comparable installations that including the energy consumption of these fans when optimizing the system efficiency was beneficial. To address this deficit, _COP_ maximization has been compared to optimizing the Coefficient of System Performance (_COSP_). The …

Exergy Based Methodology For Optimized Integration Of Heat Pumps In Industrial Processes, Karim Besbes, Assaad Zoughaib, Florence De Carlan, Jean-Louis Peureux

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Industrial processes may use heat pumps to recover low grade heat or to combine heating and cooling needs. In many cases, this technology leads to reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions. In this paper, a methodology, based on exergy analysis of heat sources and heat sinks, helping in optimizing industrial heat pumps design is presented. The optimization variables are: the refrigerant choice (pure fluid, azeotropic mixture, non azeotropic mixture), the thermodynamic state of the refrigerant (subcritical, supercritical) and the architecture of the heat pump (heat pump in reverse series). The heat pump is modelled in Modelica language: "pinch" method …

Optimized Performance Of One-Bed Adsorption Cooling System, Takahiko Miyazaki, Ibrahim I. El-Sharkawy, Bidyut Baran Saha, Shigeru Koyama Jan 2014

Optimized Performance Of One-Bed Adsorption Cooling System, Takahiko Miyazaki, Ibrahim I. El-Sharkawy, Bidyut Baran Saha, Shigeru Koyama

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Adsorption cooling system can be driven by solar energy or waste heat, so it will effectively reduce fossil fuel consumptions when total system is well-designed. On the other hand, the system tends to have a large size, which will be an obstacle to install adsorption cooling systems to small to medium scale cooling demands, such as automobiles, houses, or shops. The study was aiming at the reduction of system size of adsorption cooling systems for refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. To simplify the system, we investigated one-bed configuration of adsorption cooling system. In general, one-bed adsorption cooling system would result in …

Transient 1d Heat Exchanger Model For The Simulation Of Domestic Cooling Cycles Working With R600a, Erwin Berger, Martin Heimel, Stefan Posch, Raimund Almbauer, Martin Eichinger Jan 2014

Transient 1d Heat Exchanger Model For The Simulation Of Domestic Cooling Cycles Working With R600a, Erwin Berger, Martin Heimel, Stefan Posch, Raimund Almbauer, Martin Eichinger

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Generally, domestic refrigerators and freezers are running in non-continuous operation mode most of the time, which is a necessity to match cooling capacity to thermal loads. In currently available domestic appliances this matching is realized either by on/off or variable frequency control of the hermetic compressor, leading to a repetitive and transient change of the system state. On the other hand, if the runtimes of the compressor are longer because cooling capacity demand is high (e.g. pull down cycles, initial operation), steady state operating conditions might be reached. The cycling transients cause losses in system efficiency thus they should be …

Influence Of Surface Morphology On Wetting Behaviors Of Liquid Metal During Aluminum Heat Exchanger Fabrication, Hui Zhao, Stefan Elbel, Predrag S. Hrnjak

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

The market demand for aluminum brazed exchangers in air conditioning and refrigeration industry is continually growing owing mostly to the cost and weight savings of aluminum materials, with undisputed compactness and low charge. Manufacturing of aluminum heat exchangers requires reliable metal bonding technology to join together various components, such as tubes, fins and header manifolds. Controlled atmosphere brazing (CAB) of aluminum is the state-of-the-art technology for mass production of compact aluminum heat exchangers. Traditionally, the development of a brazing process relies on trial and error in practice. However, modern manufacturing process requires good understanding of scientific principles involved in the …

Effect Of Pulsation Width Modulation (Pwm) On The Performance Of An Evaporator, Xiaofei Wang, Ke Tang, Predrag S. Hrnjak Jan 2014

Effect Of Pulsation Width Modulation (Pwm) On The Performance Of An Evaporator, Xiaofei Wang, Ke Tang, Predrag S. Hrnjak

International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference

Pulsating flow can increase the heat transfer coefficient when a two-phase flow passes through a single horizontal tube through the following mechanisms: 1) When liquid-vapor two-phase flow and heat transfer occurs inside a tube, flow pulsations can change the flow pattern and increase liquid-wall contact area at a fixed void fraction, thus increasing the heat transfer coefficient; 2) Local pressure at some locations in the tube will drop more with pulsating flow, and the attendant reduction saturation temperature can increase local evaporation and heat transfer. However, the effects of pulsation are more complex for pulsations within a practical evaporator for …

The Knowledge Handling Notation: Building An Interface To Enable Design Conversation Diagnosis, Andrea Scheer, Axel Menning, Elisabeth Helldorff, Holger Rhinow, Claudia Nicolai Dr.

Design Thinking Research Symposium

Abstract: With the development of the Knowledge Handling Notation (KHN) we were able to provide a model for a notation that captures modes of knowledge handling and visualizes its dynamics in design conversations. The KHN functions as an interface between transcript and pattern analysis for researchers or coaches who aim at diagnosing knowledge handling in conversational interactions in general, and design reviews in particular. We applied the notation to different design review sessions and iterated on the coding, which is presented in a coding manual. A visualization of the coding shows the dynamics of the conversational interaction. We developed the …

'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd Jan 2014

'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd

Design Thinking Research Symposium

This paper explores assessment in graduate-level industrial design education. In particular, it considers how the assessment of students' design work is delivered and who delivers it. Through using aspects of conversation analysis to look in close-up detail at a number of short segments of tutor-student interaction, we consider how a tutor performs assessment himself and also coaches other students to assess, in ways that may significantly contribute to students' understanding of what assessment is and how it is to occur. Creating opportunities for students and instructors to reflect upon evaluation, and how it is performed, may better equip participants in …

Energy Modeling Of A Botanical Air Filter, Daniel W. Newkirk, William J. Hutzel, Michael Dana, Ming Qu

International High Performance Buildings Conference

According to the U.S. EPA Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors where indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Toxins in the built environment have been found to cause adverse physical and mental health effects on occupants and are estimated to cost the U.S. 125 billion dollar annually in lost productivity. To address this challenge a novel botanical air filter was developed for improving indoor air quality in buildings. The “Biowall” is envisioned as an integral part of the heating and cooling system for a home or small commercial building; where it will …

Optical Properties Of Gallium-Doped Zinc Oxide-A Low-Loss Plasmonic Material: First-Principles Theory And Experiment, Jongbum Kim, Gururaj V. Naik, Alexander V. Gavrilenko, Krishnaveni Dondapati, Vladimir I. Gavrilenko, S. M. Prokes, O. J. Glembocki, V. M. Shalaev, Alexandra Boltasseva Dec 2013

Optical Properties Of Gallium-Doped Zinc Oxide-A Low-Loss Plasmonic Material: First-Principles Theory And Experiment, Jongbum Kim, Gururaj V. Naik, Alexander V. Gavrilenko, Krishnaveni Dondapati, Vladimir I. Gavrilenko, S. M. Prokes, O. J. Glembocki, V. M. Shalaev, Alexandra Boltasseva

Birck and NCN Publications

Searching for better materials for plasmonic and metamaterial applications is an inverse design problem where theoretical studies are necessary. Using basic models of impurity doping in semiconductors, transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are identified as low-loss plasmonic materials in the near-infrared wavelength range. A more sophisticated theoretical study would help not only to improve the properties of TCOs but also to design further lower-loss materials. In this study, optical functions of one such TCO, gallium-doped zinc oxide (GZO), are studied both experimentally and by first-principles density-functional calculations. Pulsed-laser-deposited GZO films are studied by the x-ray diffraction and generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. Theoretical …

World Literatures In Secondary School Curricula In Iran, Massih Zekavat Dec 2013

World Literatures In Secondary School Curricula In Iran, Massih Zekavat

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "World Literatures in Secondary School Curricula in Iran" Massih Zekavat argues that the inclusion and teaching of works of world literature is significant at the secondary school level because it introduces students to a dialogic and polyphonic world where difference is appreciated. Further, Zekavat posits that the pedagogical use of reading world literatures would be the case in particular in countries and cultures where essentialist and homogenizing objectives and practices of culture prevail. Zekavat's argumentation is based on the recent revival of Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur in the U.S. as a pedagogical tool and practice of reading …

Comparative Literature, (Comparative) Cultural Studies, Aesthetic Education, And The Humanities, Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Comparative Literature, (Comparative) Cultural Studies, Aesthetic Education, and the Humanities" Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser discusses comparative literature in the context of cultural studies and aesthetic education. Her starting point is the complexity of comparative literature as an academic discipline propelled by intellectual curiosity for what lies across the barriers which stand in the way of understanding and enjoying creative acts of all kinds everywhere and at all times. Literary and artistic investigations which focus on aesthetic values lead us towards general aesthetics, analyses which situate the arts and literature in context with little regard for aesthetic criteria take us …

European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco Dec 2013

European Comparative Literature As Humanism, Bernard Franco

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "European Comparative Literature as Humanism" Bernard Franco presents an epistemological reflection on comparative literature in the context of the evolution of the relationships between different forms of knowledge. Franco argues that in the late nineteenth century the notion of the "humanities" replaced that of the "human sciences," but that we have recently returned to a humanist concept of knowledge linked to ethics. Franco focuses on the origins of this critical reflection about the nature of knowledge and on the debate in the Romantic period between rational and non-rational forms of knowledge. The idéologues (Cabanis, Destutt de Tracy, …

Literary Aspects In New Media Art Works, Narvika Bovcon

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Literary Aspects in New Media Art Works" Narvika Bovcon discusses examples of new media literature in the works of new media artists Jaka Železnikar and Srečo Dragan. While Železnikar is primarily a net artist who authors new media poetry and online linguistic interventions, the literary segments in Dragan's work are based in conceptual art and video art and he uses them to initiate a happening. Bovcon argues that studies of new media literature — of those works which require a readerly perception — should take time and attempt to capture the general flavor of such works which …
