About The Concept Of "Gnosticism" In Fiction Studies, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski
About The Concept Of "Gnosticism" In Fiction Studies, Fryderyk Kwiatkowski
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
I In his article "About the Concept of 'Gnosticism' in Fiction Studies" Fryderyk Kwiatkowski notices that in the twentieth-century humanities the concept of Gnosticism has become a popular term for labelling tendencies in modernity and postmodernity. Kwiatkowski argues that the majority of scholars in fiction studies base their research on outdated methodologies. In consequence, Kwiatkowski presents an overview of contemporary approaches in Gnostic studies and discusses how they can be adapted in studies of literature, film, video games, comic books, etc. By outlining advantages and disadvantages of methodological approaches, Kwiatkowski posits that in studies of fiction with Gnostic components it …

Enhanced Acoustic Transmission Into Dissipative Solid Materials Through The Use Of Inhomogeneous Plane Waves, Daniel C. Woods, J Stuart Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads
Enhanced Acoustic Transmission Into Dissipative Solid Materials Through The Use Of Inhomogeneous Plane Waves, Daniel C. Woods, J Stuart Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
A number of applications, for instance ultrasonic imaging and nondestructive testing, involve the transmission of acoustic energy across fluid-solid interfaces into dissipative solids. However, such transmission is generally hindered by the large impedance mismatch at the interface. In order to address this problem, inhomogeneous plane waves were investigated in this work for the purpose of improving the acoustic energy transmission. To this end, under the assumption of linear hysteretic damping, models for fluid-structure interaction were developed that allow for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous incident waves. For low-loss solids, the results reveal that, at the Rayleigh angle, a unique value of …

School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Regular physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits, including the prevention of many chronic diseases and conditions or a reduction in their adverse effects. Intervention studies suggest that promoting dog walking among dog owners who do not routinely walk their dogs may be an effective strategy for increasing and maintaining regular physical activity. Strategies that emphasize the value of dog walking for both dogs and people, promote the context-dependent repetition of dog walking, enhance the social-interaction benefits, encourage family dog walking and ensure availability of public space for dog walking may encourage increased dog walking. Research also supports organizing …
Reactive Flow Modeling Of Small Scale Detonation Failure Experiments For A Baseline Non-Ideal Explosive, David E. Kittell, Nick R. Cummock, Steven F. Son
Reactive Flow Modeling Of Small Scale Detonation Failure Experiments For A Baseline Non-Ideal Explosive, David E. Kittell, Nick R. Cummock, Steven F. Son
Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles
Small scale characterization experiments using only 1–5 g of a baseline ammonium nitrate plus fuel oil (ANFO) explosive are discussed and simulated using an ignition and growth reactive flow model. There exists a strong need for the small scale characterization of non-ideal explosives in order to adequately survey the wide parameter space in sample composition, density, and microstructure of these materials. However, it is largely unknown in the scientific community whether any useful or meaningful result may be obtained from detonation failure, and whether a minimum sample size or level of confinement exists for the experiments. In this work, it …

Data Driven Course Improvements: Using Artifact Analysis To Conquer Abet Criterion 4, Tony A. Lowe, David Evenhouse, Dhinesh Balaji Radhakrishnan
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
This evidence based practice describes a process to evaluate a course within the spirit of ABET Criteria 4, continuous improvement. Faculty and staff are often asked to collaborate on the design and instruction of core engineering courses. Over time, these courses may evolve to accommodate new subject matter, pedagogical approaches, political and personal preferences, or other criteria as dictated by a dynamic group of stakeholders. Many changes originate from a clearly defined need or mandate, while others may sneak in without a full analysis of the course. Repeated and often subtle changes compound to have a significant impact on the …

Geopolitical Implications Of The Sino-Japanese East China Sea Dispute For The U.S., Bert Chapman
Geopolitical Implications Of The Sino-Japanese East China Sea Dispute For The U.S., Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Much analysis on Asian strategic challenges facing the U.S. has justifiably emphasized the South China Sea (SCS). This has also been reflected in 2016 presidential campaign debate on the SCS as an emerging area of U.S. foreign and national security policy concern. The East China Sea (ECS) is at least as important for the strategic interests of the U.S. and its allies given the tension between China and Japan over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, potential energy resources in this body of water, increasing defense spending by adjacent geographic powers, the area’s importance as a maritime international trade route, and the possibility …
Sondage Autour De L’Exposition Internationale Pour La Palestine De 1978, Nasser Soumi
Sondage Autour De L’Exposition Internationale Pour La Palestine De 1978, Nasser Soumi
Artl@s Bulletin

Between Paris And London: Contacts And Exchanges Of South American Artists In Europe (1950-1970), Maria De Fatima Morethy Couto Dr
Artl@s Bulletin
This paper calls attention to a network of artists, dealers, and critics from Europe and South America thanks to whom, from the 1950s to the early 1970s, Paris and London welcomed and fostered a certain form of South American avant-garde art. Accordingly, it discusses the European reception given to five South American artists active in Paris and London —Lygia Clark, Hélio Oiticica, Sérgio Camargo, Jesús Rafael Soto and Julio Le Parc—whose artistic practices were sometimes related to kineticism. It highlights the impact they had on the European art scene, as well as the role of several cultural agents who were …

User experience remains a crucial consideration when assessing the successfulness of information visualization systems. The theory of affordances provides a robust framework for user experience design. In this article, we demonstrate a design case that employs an affordance-based framework and evaluate the information visualization display design. SolarWheels is an interactive information visualization designed for large display walls in computer network control rooms to help cybersecurity analysts become aware of network status and emerging issues. Given the critical nature of this context, the status and performance of a computer network must be precisely monitored and remedied in real time. In this …
Aesthetic, Spiritual, And Flow Experiences: Contrasts And Educational Implications, P. Bruce Uhrmacher, Christy Moroye, Bradley Conrad
Aesthetic, Spiritual, And Flow Experiences: Contrasts And Educational Implications, P. Bruce Uhrmacher, Christy Moroye, Bradley Conrad
Education and Culture
The purpose of this paper is to cross-examine Dewey’s ideas on religious and aesthetic experiences, and Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of flow experience. To achieve this end, we offer an analytic framework for evaluating experiences: triggers, characterizations, and import. In using this framework, we not only more deeply examine these ideas of experience, but we also discuss what educators may learn from the intersection of these three important theories of experience.
Cultivating Civic Habits: A Deweyan Analysis Of The National Council For The Social Studies Position Statement On Guidelines For Social Studies Teaching And Learning, Lance E. Mason
Education and Culture
The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) position statement on Curriculum Guidelines for Social Studies Teaching and Learning provides a conceptual outline for contemporary social studies curriculum, calling for social studies learning that is meaningful, integrated, value-based, challenging, and active. This is largely consistent with a Deweyan approach to social studies, though the statement’s lack of theoretical grounding makes it vulnerable to misappropriation. By filtering the statement’s framework through Dewey’s pragmatism, such vulnerabilities can be articulated, while offering a deeper exploration of both the possibilities and challenges for implementation.
Ethical Principles And School Challenges: A Deweyan Analysis, Douglas J. Simpson, Donal M. Sacken
Ethical Principles And School Challenges: A Deweyan Analysis, Douglas J. Simpson, Donal M. Sacken
Education and Culture
In this study, we examine Dewey’s understanding of ethical principles by identifying a number of his primary emphases, including how he thought principles may be reconstructed and employed in schools. We do this by (a) explicating how he understood the reconstruction of general, universal, and absolute ethical claims; (b) anticipating how some detractors of his view of practical certainty may question its serviceability; and (c) demonstrating how his ideas may be employed to address a problematic high school situation. In addition, we episodically embed in these primary emphases thoughts about how ethical principles play a part in Dewey’s more comprehensive …
Democracy And The Industrial Imagination In American Education, Steven Fesmire
Democracy And The Industrial Imagination In American Education, Steven Fesmire
Education and Culture
Educational politics in the United States is entangled in the notion that the foremost mission of education is, in the infamous words of Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed revision of the University of Wisconsin’s mission, “to develop human resources to meet the state’s workforce needs.” This general outlook is not an outlier. It is typical of those who approach education primarily as a way to fuel industry with skilled labor. This outlook is premised on an increasingly dominant educational model that is miseducative, antidemocratic, and incompatible with values of mutual respect and individual dignity. It is helpful to analyze the industrial …

The Effect Of Nano-Sio2 Dispersed Methods On Mechanical Properties Of Cement Mortar, Mingle Liu, Zonghui Zhou, Xiuzhi Zhang, Xiangzi Yang, Xin Cheng
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Nano-SiO2 is added to the cement by using different dispersion methods, through the macroscopic mechanical properties to characterize its dispersion in the cement, it can be used to explore the best experimental process. The results show that the compressive strength of cement samples with different dispersion methods is different. When the physical dispersion method is used, the intensity is not improved, but the ultrasonic dispersion method is the smallest, and the dispersion of nano-SiO2 is -9.11%. When the surfactant is used as dispersant, the dispersion of nano-SiO2 by Naphthalene water reducer is the best, and the compressive …

Micromechanical Modeling For Material Design Of Durable Infrastructural Materials: The Influence Of Aggregate And Matrix Modification On Elastic Behavior Of Mortars, Sumanta Das, Amit Maroli, Narayanan Neithalath
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper reports the fundamental difference in microstress distributions in traditional hardened cement paste with quartz inclusions and a cement paste with lightweight aggregate (LWA) inclusions using microstructurebased numerical simulation involving finite element method with periodic boundary conditions. Variation of relative stress distributions under varying component material properties and varying microstructural features in both the systems is elucidated for a comprehensive understanding. The presented microstructure-based numerical technique accurately captures the stress concentrations inside microheterogeneous systems, which is otherwise not detectible using analytical homogenization schemes. Numerical simulations reveal that strengthening and stiffening of matrix and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) with silica …

China’s coastal cities contain a large number of islands with abundant human activities, in which buildings are in a typical marine corrosion environment and the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures is very prominent. This paper makes research work on two aspects: (1) the durability assessment and durability improvement after a thorough investigation of the architecture of Xiangtan County, Ningbo city, on an island and (2) the application research of the bidirectional electromigration rehabilitation (BIEM) technology to enhance the durability of existing island building life. This paper designs a set of BIEM equipment based on solar power supply and develops a …
Experimental Study On The Influence Of Curing Conditions On Capillary Absorption Of Concrete, Li-Cheng Wang, Jiu-Wen Bao, Bao-Juan Cheng
Experimental Study On The Influence Of Curing Conditions On Capillary Absorption Of Concrete, Li-Cheng Wang, Jiu-Wen Bao, Bao-Juan Cheng
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Both the hardening process and formation of microstructure of concrete are significantly influenced by the curing condition. The capillary absorption of concrete is closely related to the structure and distribution of the pores within the material. This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of four curing conditions, i.e., standard curing, natural curing, water curing, and sealed curing, on the capillary absorption of normal concrete. Compressive strength tests on the cylinder specimens that are core drilled from concrete slabs are carried out. The “pie” samples cut from three different locations along the height direction of cylinder specimens are then …
Aggregate Shape Effect On Multicomponent Ionic Electromigration In Concrete, Qing-Feng Liu, Long-Yuan Li, Jian Yang
Aggregate Shape Effect On Multicomponent Ionic Electromigration In Concrete, Qing-Feng Liu, Long-Yuan Li, Jian Yang
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper presents a numerical study on the mechanism of chloride migration in concrete. Unlike most of existing work, this study utilises multicomponent ionic transport models to reflect the influence of ionic interactions by coupling both mass conservation and Poisson’s equations. A series of 2-D, 3-phase models with different shapes and volume fractions of aggregates are developed to simulate the chloride migration test. Through a comparatively overall numerical exploration that considers external voltage, ionic interactions, heterogeneous nature, ITZ, and ionic binding, some important features about multispecies coupling and aggregate shape effect, which have not been properly reported from existing concrete …
