Circus As Idée Fixe And Hunger, Anna-Sophie Jürgens
Circus As Idée Fixe And Hunger, Anna-Sophie Jürgens
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Circus as idée fixe and Hunger" Anna-Sophie Jürgens discusses circus fiction in which characters often display extreme, intense psychological traits. They are for example irascible, pyromaniac, sadistic, or megalomaniac. Particularly striking are protagonists with alternative psychological attitudes in fictional circus texts of the twentieth century such as Franz Kafka's hunger artist, Michael Raleigh's ringmaster Lewis Tully or Richard Schmitt's aerialist Garry, who can be seen as incubators of circus-related idées fixes. These literary circus characters develop fixations on circus that manifest themselves as a physical sensation of desiring circus like food, in other words: in circus …
Delillo's Falling Man And The Trouble With Sympathy In Narratives Of Terrorism, Jessica Mcdonald
Delillo's Falling Man And The Trouble With Sympathy In Narratives Of Terrorism, Jessica Mcdonald
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "DeLillo's Falling Man and the Trouble with Sympathy in Narratives of Terrorism" Jessica McDonald discusses the ways Don DeLillo's characterization of a 9/11 terrorist elicits reader sympathy in his 2007 novel Falling Man. McDonald argues that introducing sympathy into narratives of terrorism undermines attempts to understand the contextual issues out of which terrorism arises even if the rhetoric of sympathy may seem to foster a sense of "fellow-feeling" that makes acts of political protest and resistance more accessible to broader publics.
Self-Efficacy As A Long-Term Outcome Of A General Education Course On Digital Technologies, Renata A. Revelo, Christopher Schmitz, Duyen Le, Michael C. Loui
Self-Efficacy As A Long-Term Outcome Of A General Education Course On Digital Technologies, Renata A. Revelo, Christopher Schmitz, Duyen Le, Michael C. Loui
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
This study investigates the long-term outcomes of a general education course on digital technologies. Through cross-sectional and longitudinal interviews with students, the authors find that self-efficacy is a long-term student outcome. The primary sources of self-efficacy in the course for students were verbal persuasion and mastery experience. Faculty and teaching assistants were key sources for verbal persuasion. Some students experienced a success paradox: they felt successful in the course even though they failed to meet all of their initial expectations. This study can guide faculty in designing a course to promote student self-efficacy.
The Construction Of Acoustic Waveforms From Plane Wave Components To Enhance Energy Transmission Into Solid Media, Daniel C. Woods, J Stuart Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads
The Construction Of Acoustic Waveforms From Plane Wave Components To Enhance Energy Transmission Into Solid Media, Daniel C. Woods, J Stuart Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The transmission of acoustic energy into solid materials is of interest in a wide range of applications, including ultrasonic imaging and nondestructive testing. However, the large impedance mismatch at the solid interface generally limits the transmission of incident acoustic energy. With the goal of improving the fraction of the energy transmitted into solid materials, the use of various bounded spatial profiles, including commonly-employed forms, such as Gaussian distributions, as well as newly-constructed profiles, has been investigated. The spatial profile is specified as the pressure amplitude distribution of the incident wave. Bounded acoustic beams are represented here as sums of harmonic …
Toma Y Daca: Transculturación Y Presencia De Escritores Chino-Latinoamericanos, Huei Lan Yen
Toma Y Daca: Transculturación Y Presencia De Escritores Chino-Latinoamericanos, Huei Lan Yen
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Passive Visual Analytics Of Social Media Data For Detection Of Unusual Events, Kush Rustagi, Junghoon Chae
Passive Visual Analytics Of Social Media Data For Detection Of Unusual Events, Kush Rustagi, Junghoon Chae
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Now that social media sites have gained substantial traction, huge amounts of un-analyzed valuable data are being generated. Posts containing images and text have spatiotemporal data attached as well, having immense value for increasing situational awareness of local events, providing insights for investigations and understanding the extent of incidents, their severity, and consequences, as well as their time-evolving nature. However, the large volume of unstructured social media data hinders exploration and examination. To analyze such social media data, the S.M.A.R.T system provides the analyst with an interactive visual spatiotemporal analysis and spatial decision support environment that assists in evacuation planning …
